RESERVED PARKING PERMITS NOW AVAILABLE
Beginning Friday, January 9th, the Business Office will sell reserved parking spaces to interested faculty, staff, and students. The reserved permit is an annual permit for a specific reserved parking space in either E lot or the new D-South lot. The reserved parking space includes an electrical outlet for cold temperatures. The price of the reserved parking permit for the 97-98 year is $100. (Because of delays in the delivery of the reserved spaces, the 97-98 permit price will be discounted to $85.) Those vehicles with reserved parking permits are allowed to park in any of the UMC parking lots (similar to an all-lot-parking permit).

Twenty numbered spaces (1-20) are available in E lot (North row), and seventy-nine numbered spaces (21-99) are available in the D-South lot. Due to the cost of electrical power demand, all outlets will be controlled by temperature, time of day, and day of week. Outlets will be energized from 6 p.m. to 7:30 a.m. Monday through Friday and all hours of the day/night on Saturday and Sunday. No outlets will be energized at anytime when the temperature is above 15 degrees F. Users are encouraged not to connect their vehicle to the electrical outlets if they know they will not be using their vehicle the following day.

Only those vehicles with the appropriately numbered reserved parking permit will be allowed in the reserved parking spaces. Each assigned reserved parking space will have Signage to correspond with the number on the permit. Signage identifies the spaces as "reserved - special permit required." Unauthorized vehicles in reserved parking spaces will be ticketed, towed and stored at the owner's expense. Only those vehicles with the appropriate reserved parking permit may use the electrical outlets provided. Any vehicle without a valid reserved parking permit, which is plugged into a reserved parking outlet, will be ticketed, towed and stored at the owner's expense.

The reserved parking permits are being sold on a "first come first served" basis. Students who have put their names on a waiting list will be given top priority.
--Dean McCleary

SERVING STUDENTS WITH DISABILITIES
Serving Students with Disabilities: What Families and Communities Need to Know is the subject of satellite Town Meeting scheduled for Tuesday, January 20, from 7 to 8 p.m. in Sahlstrom Conference Center AB. The Town Meeting will look at ways families, educators and communities can work together to improve education for students with disabilities – and provide schools with the tools to assess what all children are learning. The discussion also will consider the recent amendments to the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), which provided children with disabilities an education that meets their individual needs. All faculty and staff are invited.

IMPROVEMENTS ENABLE STUDENT WEB SELF-REGISTRATION
Student self-registration using the World Wide Web will be available to most UMC students starting Spring Quarter 1998. Registration begins January 25th. In-person registration will still be available at the Office of the Registrar, 109 Selvig Hall.

Students must meet two criteria in order to be eligible to self-register using the web: (1) They must be an officially admitted degree-seeking student (PSEOA, NWTC-EGF, Adult Special, and College in the High School students are NOT eligible), and (2) They must have a UMC cumulative GPA of at least a 2.00. All other students (including new freshmen and new transfers) MUST register in-person. All in-person registrations require adviser approvals.

Several recent enhancements have made self-registration possible including:

  1. The UMC Class Schedule, with weekly updates, is now presented on-line in its entirety (at http://www.umcrookston.edu/yourcareer/classschedule).
  2. The Student Access System (at http://r2.micro.umn.edu/sai.run) provides students with basic information including registration eligibility, their academic record, and their financial aid and STARS accounts.
  3. The Academic Progress Audit System (APAS) report provides students and their advisers with accurate, quarterly reports on progress towards completing degree requirements. One copy of the APAS report will be sent to advisers and one copy to students' UMC mailbox.
  4. Section Status Reports (at http://www.umcrookston.edu/yourcareer/classschedule/) are updated nightly and provide information regarding class availability.
  5. The web-based registration system (at www.umcrookston.edu/yourcareer/classschedule/webreg.htm) is available Monday - Thursday from 7 a.m. - 12 midnight, Friday from 7 a.m. - 10 p.m., and on Saturday from 8 a.m. - 6 p.m., except on official University holidays. Eligible students will be able to register for classes and complete drop/add transactions at their convenience.

Information sessions open to anyone interested in self-registration have been scheduled in Dowell 114 on Wednesday, January 21 at 12 noon, 3 p.m. and 5 p.m.; and on Thursday, January 22 at 9 a.m. and 4 p.m.
