WEB-BASED SEMESTER CONVERSION INFORMATION SYSTEM
The University of Minnesota web-based Semester Conversion
Information System has been designed to support the change to a semester-based calendar on
all UM campuses. It is to be used throughout the conversion effort for the recording in a
standard format all information regarding semester-based courses and programs.
At UMC, course conversion information is to be submitted to the Office of Academic Affairs on the "Semester Course Proposal Form" available from division offices and program directors for input to the all UM website. An "electronic" version of the form for the local collection of this data is being developed. Information will be provided when this becomes available.
All faculty are strongly encouraged to familiarize themselves with the
UM course conversion website. It is the intent that this will be the primary communication
means for sharing information about how quarter courses are being converted to their
semester equivalent. The website is located at the following URL:

CHARGING OF DIRECT AND INDIRECT COSTS
Charging of direct and indirect costs for research grants has
raised concerns and questions among faculty and administrators, and the policy has now
been refined and clarified, VP Brenner said in a January 14 e-mail memo to principal
investigators, deans, directors, department heads, and unit administrators. Administrative
and clerical personnel costs, recurring telephone, postage, office supplies, photocopies,
books, and subscriptions are normally considered indirect costs, but in some cases they
can be charged to federal projects as direct costs. If so, they must be documented and
justified. One example: clerical costs could be justified for projects that involve
extensive data accumulation, analysis and entry, surveying, and tabulating. Memo available
in External Relations and Vice Chancellor for Financial Affairs offices.

GOLDEN EAGLE INFORMER LINE TO ADD LOAN INFORMATION
By the end of January, loan information for students with
Perkins loans will be available on the Golden Eagle Informer Line, 281-UOFM (281-8636).
Loan information that can be obtained on the system will include current amount due, total
payoff amount, and balance on outstanding individual loan principle. Also available will
be information on requesting a loan deferment or cancellation, and a summary of hold
policies. A Student Accounts Receivable script is in final draft stages. This service
should be added to the Golden Eagle Informer Line by the end of March.

THANK YOU
The Management and Health Management Clubs would like to extend
a most sincere thank you to the students, faculty and staff who helped make the blood
drive on January 21 such a success! A total of 54 people volunteered, and 46 were able to
give blood. United Blood Services was very pleased with the UMC drive, especially given
the shortage of blood in the surrounding communities due to the bad weather. Your
generosity will benefit many patients.
Also, thank you to Dining Services for supplying the refreshments during
the blood drive. We look forward to seeing you again during the next blood drive in April!
