PRESIDENT HASSELMO PRESENTS CHECK TO UMC FOR FLOOD SUPPORT
University of Minnesota President Nils Hasselmo presented a check to Chancellor Sargeant for $25,000 from the U of M Foundation to initiate an immediate response for students. Additional dollars will be available to address institutional needs.

UMC is making every effort to get students back to campus, following displacement by floods in northwestern Minnesota. This cooperative effort is being developed to help businesses recover the data from their hard drives that they need to get their businesses back in operation as soon as possible.

In the interim, ONTRACK Data International and the Trade Corridor are advising businesses with flood damaged computers to take the following precautions:

CITIZENS JURY ON FUNDING K-12 EDUCATION
Twelve Polk County citizens will convene as a Citizens Jury May 5-9 at UMC to hear testimony and offer recommendations about K-12 education. Faculty, staff and students are invited to observe the week long series of presentations and deliberations in the Conference Center.

The Citizens Jury will explore a wide range of issues related to K-12 education. The jury will hear testimony from experts and stakeholders including parents and school administrators. After studying the issues, the jury will debate and offer recommendations regarding financing, outcome goals, and the role of the school in the community. The presentation of the recommendations will be Friday, May 9, beginning at 1:30 p.m.

The goal of the project is to bring together average citizens to improve the level of civic discourse about important public policy issues. The Crookston project is part of a state-wide project called "Can We Afford the Future" involving UMC, the Minnesota Extension Service, the Humphrey Institute, and the Jefferson Center. Local coordinators are Lynne Mullins and Norman County Extension Educator Peg Braaten.
