EMPLOYEE ASSISTANCE
It seems an appropriate time to remind all University employees that we have an employee
assistance program that is designed to provide assistance in times of need.
The Northwestern Mental Health Center (218-281-3940) is our Employee Assistance Program (EAP) provider for UMC. The EAP is a problem identification and referral service for employees experiencing personal, relationship, or work related problems. The service is confidential, private, voluntary, and free of cost. The program can assist a UMC employee or family member in coping with issues such as: depression, substance abuse, grief, marital/family issues, job/career challenges, etc.
If there is a need, we encourage you to take full advantage of these
important services. If you have any questions or if you would like additional information,
feel free to call Jacquie 8325, Les 8345, or Dean 8324.

CAN WE AFFORD THE FUTURE?
CITIZENS JURY ON FUNDING K-12 EDUCATION
Twelve Polk County citizens will convene as a Citizens Jury May 5-9 at UMC to hear
testimony and offer recommendations about K-12 education. Faculty, staff and students are
invited to observe the week long series of presentations and deliberations in the
Conference Center.
The Citizens Jury will explore a wide range of issues related to K-12 education. They will hear testimony from experts and stakeholders including parents and school administrators. After studying the issues, they will debate and offer recommendations regarding financing, outcome goals, and the role of the school in the community. The presentation of the recommendations will be Friday, May 9, beginning at 1:30 p.m.
The goal of the project is to bring together average citizens to improve the level of civic discourse about important public policy issues. The Crookston project is part of a state-wide project called "Can We Afford the Future" involving UMC, the Minnesota Extension Service, the Humphrey Institute, and the Jefferson Center. Local coordinators are Mahnomen County Extension Educator Peg Braaten and UMC Professor Lynne Mullins.
For a copy of the complete agenda, call 8681.

The University Inventory Services staff will be on our campus on May 12 to conduct a
complete inventory of all capital assets (items over $500). We expect there will be two

inventory.
These employees will be issued the appropriate keys to allow them access to all rooms/buildings in order to locate and identify all University property.
We would ask that everyone do whatever they can to assist with the
