PRIORITY REGISTRATION POLICY
Priority registration allows a student with a documented disability to be granted
permission to register at the beginning of the registration queue. Permission for priority
registration may be granted to a student with a disability for the following reasons:
The time required for travel between classes regularly exceeds the ten minutes available to students, and requires careful scheduling;
The student requires the assistance of a personal care attendant and must arrange classes to coincide to the maximum degree possible with the availability of attendant care;
The student's health, or the necessity of arranging for other ongoing support services not associated with UMC, requires continuity of scheduling;
Time for renovation or relocation of classroom space may be required to ensure access for the student when the course is scheduled to begin; and
Other valid reasons as approved by the academic adviser and
Office for Students with Disabilities coordinator.
Requests for priority registration may be made by the
student or the student's academic adviser to the Office for Students with Disabilities
(OSD). The request and the OSD recommendation will be forwarded to the Office of the
Registrar (OTR) for action. The OTR will notify the student regarding the decision within
five academic days, and if approved, the assigned registration date and time. Appeals of
denied requests may be made to the Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs within five days
of notification of the denial.

FACULTY DEVELOPMENT CONFERENCE
"Teaching in Context, Connecting Instruction to Authentic Experience" is the
title of the winter 1997 faculty development conference to be held February 20-21 at the
Radisson Hotel South in Bloomington, MN. The keynote address will be given by J. Herman
Blake, vice chancellor for Undergraduate Education, Indiana University-Purdue University
Indianapolis, followed by more than 20 concurrent sessions on service-learning,
problem-based learning, internships, and more. The closing address will be given by
Shirley Brice Heath, professor of English and Linguistics, Department of English, Stanford
University. Brochures with detailed conference information, including registration form
and hotel information, have been sent to faculty. If you are interested in the conference
but do not receive a brochure, please contact the Academic Affairs Office. Conference
registration and hotel accommodations are the responsibility of the individual faculty
member.

FIRE SCHOOL RETURNS TO CAMPUS
On January 25-26, UMC, the Crookston Fire Department and Northwest Technical College,
Moorhead, will host the mid-winter Northwest Minnesota Fire and Rescue School. In 1974,
the first school of its kind was held on our campus; it returned in 1994 and is back by
popular demand. Since that original school each campus of the NTC system has alternated as
a host site for a weekend of intensive training for fire departments and emergency
personnel.
The training staff of experts from throughout Minnesota is excited to return to UMC
because of the unique facilities which allow for a wide variety of courses to be offered.
Approximately 300 firefighters and emergency personnel from Minnesota, North Dakota and
Manitoba are expected to register for 19 different courses during the two days. Four
National Fire Academy officer training courses are offered as well as others in
firefighting techniques and safety, rural fire tactics, multi-unit fires, car fires, auto
extrication, agricultural extrication, advanced search and rescue, water and ice rescue,
confined space rescue, high level rescue, advanced ventilation, record keeping and
computers in the fire service. Many of the classroom buildings, UTOC, Conference Center
and dormitories will set the stage for an intense weekend of training.

Minnesota. If you need copies for a group or conference, contact John Zak or Andrew Svec.

ADDRESS
I have had some inquiry as to where memorials for Catherine Ommen (Mary Beth
Sargeant's mother) could be sent. The family has indicated memorial contributions may be
directed to the Cullom Library or St. John's Catholic Church, Cullom, IL 60929.
