Seasonal
Affective Disorder to be discussed at Magnificent Monday November 29
Do you have questions about
Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD)? Do you wonder if YOU might have it?
What does a light box look like and how do they work? How would I find
out if I have SAD? If you have these or other questions about Seasonal
Affective Disorder plan to join Cheryl Forfang of the Northwestern
Mental Health Center at noon on Monday, November 29, in Brown Dining
Room A&B. Cheryl will have a personal story to share, show a light box,
present a self-assessment inventory for you to rate yourself on the SAD
continuum, discuss strategies for self help, and answer other questions
about the disorder. There is no charge to attend, you do not have to
pre-register, and the session is open to faculty, staff and students.
Take charge of your health and learn more about this relatively common
northern latitude malady on our next Magnificent Monday,
sponsored by UMC Student Health and the Office for Students with
Disabilities.

Laura
Bell Named Natural Resources Lab Coordinator

Dan Svedarksy, Head of UMC's Natural
Resources Department,
welcomes Laura Bell as the new Lab Services Coordinator
Laura Bell was recently named Lab
Services Coordinator for the Natural Resources Department at UMC and the
Northwest Research and Outreach Center (NW ROC), according to Dr. Dan
Svedarsky, Natural Resources Department Head and Research Biologist at
the NW ROC. “We enthusiastically welcome Laura to the natural resources
team,” according to Svedarsky. “We are fortunate to find someone of
Laura’s qualifications and it will be a wonderful fit. She brings a
remarkable education and experience background to the Department that
will enhance our hands-on educational program in natural resources.”
Bell, a native of
Fisher, Minnesota has a Bachelor’s degree in Wildlife Management from
North Dakota State University. She most recently worked as a Preserve
Management Assistant at the Glacial Ridges Project, the nation’s newest
National Wildlife Refuge and field facility for several natural resource
classes at UMC. She previously worked in various laboratory and
teaching support capacities along with conducting a wildlife research
project as part of a Study Abroad experience in Nairobi, Kenya. She was
an outdoor guide at the Idaho Rocky Mountain Ranch in Stanley, Idaho and
an Outdoor Educator and Naturalist at the Ponca State Park, in Nebraska.
At the University, she
will be a support assistant to natural resources faculty which offer
programs in natural resources, horticulture, golf and turf, and
aviation. In addition, she will serve as the naturalist and maintenance
coordinator at the Red River Valley Natural History Area of the NW ROC.
She has a number of specialized certifications including CPR and First
Aid, Fire Training, Open Water Scuba, and Firearms Safety.
For more information
about UMC’s natural resource programs, visit the website at <http://www.umcrookston.edu/academics/NatR/ProgramOptions/>.

University of Minnesota Award
of Distinction
This year I am pleased to
announce a new award called the University of Minnesota Award of
Distinction. The award was created by the Senate All-University Honors
Committee and approved by the Board of Regents. This award recognizes
people who have attained distinction in their field, profession, and/or
public or volunteer service and who are not or have not been a student
or employee at the University of Minnesota. The Award of Distinction is
parallel to the Outstanding Achievement Award with the following
distinction: 1) it recognizes public or volunteer service, and 2) alums
or former members of the faculty, staff, and Board of Regents, are not
eligible. Awards of Distinction are not awarded to encourage or reward
financial contributions to the University.
The nominations process for the Award of
Distinction mirrors that of the Outstanding Achievement Award.
Nominations for all awards should be submitted to the All-University
Honors Committee six months in advance of the award date to allow the
committee, my office, and the Board of Regents sufficient time to review
and act on the nominations. If you do not already have a collegiate
honors committee, I hope you will consider appointing one so that
appropriate nominations can be formulated throughout this academic year.
The University of Minnesota has a long
tradition of awarding honorary degrees, Outstanding Achievement Awards,
alumni service awards, and Regents awards to celebrate the
accomplishments of alumni and others outside the University who
exemplify the best of scholarly life of service to the community, the
nation, or the world. These awards represent a unique opportunity to
recognize individuals who share our values and who have achieved
extraordinary recognition beyond the University of Minnesota. In
essence, they honor the recipient while at the same time bringing honor,
pride, and good will to the University and the collegiate units. The
Award of Distinction will provide yet another opportunity to recognize
the very best who are not our alums but who have contributed greatly.
For more information about the awards or nomination process, please
contact Vickie Courtney at 612-625-9369 or go to: <http://www.umn.edu/usenate/committees/alluhonors.html>.

United
Way Campaign Reminder
Just a quick reminder to everyone
that we have one week behind us, and next Monday, November 29, 2004, we
will try to finish up our United Way Campaign for this year. We have
gotten off to a slow start but it is a start and we anticipate a great
finish.
Thank you to all who
have already sent in their campaign pledge. The goal set for UMC this
year is $7000 and to date, 20 individuals have pledged an amount of
$1828 to the United Way, and $155 to the MN Environmental Fund. This is
a grand total of $1983 pledged, which is 28.32% of the total goal.
The 20 individuals who have already pledged makeup a total of only 7.09%
of the individuals who have received a pledge card this year. I am sure
that when the rest of the pledges come in, we will far exceed this
year’s goal.
At this time, we are
asking that the other 93% of the UMC working population please locate
your packet and fill out your pledge card. I can understand if some of
you have misplaced your packet and cannot locate your pledge card.
Please call Anne Burke, ext. 8610, or Dennis Magsam, ext. 8400, we will
be more than happy to get another packet for you.
Thus far in our
campaign, 14 individuals, or 70% of the individuals who have made
pledges, have done so through the process of payroll deductions. This
is by far the easiest way to make a pledge and one which hurts the least
due to the smaller amount being taken out of each check. We urge each
of you to give some thought to a donation via payroll deduction.
