15-Passenger Van Training September 22

Effective November 1, 2002 the University of Minnesota will not allow employees or students to drive a 15-passenger van unless they have completed a safety certification course.  This new policy applies to vans owned by the University and rented from an outside source!  There will be no exceptions to this policy!

You must attend in person to receive certification by the University of Minnesota.  UMC Facilities Management will not allow vans to be reserved, picked up or driven unless you are on a list of certified drivers.

If you might be asked to drive a 15-passenger van as part of your position’s responsibilities, for a class, field trip, club activity, community service or athletic event, you must complete this training.  Administrators, faculty, advisors, coaches and work-study supervisors, please contact any students that may need this training to assist you.

(If you have previously completed the training, you do not need to attend again.)

Training is provided by Bill Roberts, Director of Fleet Services for the University of Minnesota.  He has an excellent training program full of important information for all drivers.  Please arrange schedules so that those who need the training can attend on:
Wednesday, September 22, 3 to 4:45 p.m., 4 Hill Hall

This will be the only time this training is provided during the 2004 Fall Semester!

Pre-registration is required.  For questions and registration, please contact Tom Feiro, Environmental Health & Safety at 281-8300 or via email at tfeiro@umn.edu OR Michelle Ramstad, Facilities Management and Operations, at 281-8483 or umlr005@umn.edu.

Bengt WashburnComedian Bengt Washburn to Perform for
September 22 W.O.W. Event
Comedian Bengt Washburn will perform Wednesday, September 22 at 8 p.m. in Kiehle Auditorium.  Bengt (pronounced “bent”) Washburn was born into a small Mormon family (seven kids) and raised in a big Mormon town (pop. 1,000) in Utah.  Always fresh, an evening with Bengt presents the world as seen through the eyes of a small town Mormon boy gone slightly awry.  Bengt is unique yet universal, achieving the quirky while remaining accessible.  Described as “an intellectual with an imp’s perspective,” his musings are clever, silly, poignant, pointed, irreverent, thought-provoking, and hilarious.  He’s a 2001 San Francisco Comedy Competition winner and performed at the 2002 Winter Olympics.

Homecoming Parade October 9
The UMC Alumni Association (UMCAA) will be sponsoring the annual Homecoming Parade on Saturday, October 9.  All clubs, organizations, residence floors, groups, teams, etc. are encouraged to participate in the parade – Homecoming 2004 “Claw the Bears:  They’re UnBEARable.”

Homecoming Parade Float 2003Parade entries line up at 10:30 a.m. behind Robertson and Kiehle buildings.  The parade will begin at 11:30 a.m. and travel around the campus mall to Parking Lot E.  Prizes of $50 will be awarded to:

  • Best Theme

  • Best Crowd Pleaser

  • Most Creative

Pick up your parade entry form at the Dowell Info Desk or use the attached form and submit it to the Alumni Office, 115B Kiehle Building, by October 4.

The training is delivered in two parts; it is not necessary to take Part 1 before Part 2.  If you have already taken the training, you do not need to do so again.

Dates for ITV delivery are:

  • Part 2, October 14, 9 a.m. to noon

  • Part 1, December 2, 9 a.m. to noon

You can register for the training at the following web site (there is no charge):  http://www.research.umn.edu/first/CourseSchedReg.htm

Please let me know if you must have Part 1 training before December. Two other sessions are offered this fall on the TC campus and Academic Affairs will work with your Department to help cover the cost of travel.

Disability Information Disclosure
I was recently asked by a student with a disability if they are required to give their disability information to a faculty member.  The answer to that is both ‘yes’ and ‘no.’  Students are not required to disclose the specific nature of a disability to a faculty member in order to obtain accommodations, but they are required to document that disability to a significant degree in the Office for Students with Disabilities at UMC in Owen 270.  Professors do have a right to know if the students who are seeking accommodations are approved for those accommodations.  By University policy, disability documentation is to be stored in the Office for Students with Disabilities and may not be disclosed without the consent of the student.  Students seeking accommodations generally meet to discuss their disability information, develop an accommodation plan, and then send those accommodation requests out with their consent to faculty and specific staff.  Faculty members are not required to grant accommodation requests that have not been approved by the UMC Office for Students with Disabilities.  If you have additional questions or concerns with regard to this information, please contact Laurie Wilson at 8587.  Thank you.

“My Active Advisees” Suite of Reports Now Available at UMReports
UMReports has developed a new way for advisors to access report information (including private student data) for all their active advisees (Grad and Undergrad).    The report is located in Category: Student & Instruction Sub-Category:  Students.  To add this link to your home page, log in to www.umreports.umn.edu and go to the Search Reports tab.  Type advisees in the search box at the top of the page and hit the search button.  Click the check box in the Include on My Home Page column next to the My Active Advisees Index Page report and hit the include button at the bottom of the page.

My Active Advisees – Index
This report serves as the gateway to other “My Advisees” reports based on your current list of advisees and gives you a graphical representation of your current advising load.   From the Index Page you can view an Advisees Roster – by academic career, advising plan, advising committee assignments (if any) or a full roster of all your active advisees. The index page also provides access to the Registration Summary or Academic Record for an individual advisee, searching by emplid or name.

Linked Reports from My Active Advisees Index Page:
My Active Advisees – Roster
This report provides information about your current advisees, but is based on their last enrolled term. The Roster lists all active programs, plans, and subplans for each advisee.  In addition term progress units, total units earned, UM cum GPA, honors, expected graduation term, and International Student Group are included.  A link to Student Addresses is provided.

My Advisees – Midterm Alerts report
This report allows you to pick a term and see if any of your current advisees had alerts for the selected term.  Since the terms are in the past, the primary plan showing on the report was the students' plan during the selected term.

My Advisees – No Enrollment
This report allows you to pick a term and see if any of your current advisees did not enroll or completely cancelled for that term.  Again, the primary plan shown is the students' plan for the selected term and may not be the student's plan now if you selected a term in the past.  If the student is no longer in the college for which you are assigned as an advisor, they will drop off of the report.  For example, if you select Fall 2004 and you are an advisor in CLA, your advisees who changed colleges effective Fall 2004 and have not yet registered will not appear on your list.

My Advisees – Registration Holds
This report shows your current advisees who have a service indicator that holds registration on their records.  Click on the arrow above the registration hold column to group the report by hold.  Click on the arrow above any other column to return to the default format.

These reports contain private student data to be used for advising purposes only and may not be released to a third party.

  • March 4 – Committee will notify by March 11

Robert Peterson Hired as Interim Vice Chancellor for University Relations
Robert Peterson, J.D., has been hired to serve as the Interim Vice Chancellor for University Relations at the University of Minnesota, Crookston (UMC).  He will serve as the chief administrative officer responsible for providing leadership in development, athletics, governmental affairs, alumni relations, and institutional communications for UMC.  He is scheduled to begin October 6, 2004.

Peterson’s expertise includes estate planning, gift tax, charitable lead and remainder trusts, real estate, and life insurance.  “Peterson will be an enormous asset to our administrative team.  His unique understanding of our service region and his wealth of knowledge will be a real benefit to our campus,” said Dr. Velmer Burton, UMC’s Chancellor.  “We are looking forward to having him at UMC.”

Most recently, Peterson served as the Director of Gift Planning at the University of Minnesota Foundation.  He has more than 14 years of experience as an estate planning attorney, 25 years as an investment advisor, and 25 years of experience working with clients’ tax issues.  Peterson received his B.S.B. from the Carlson School of Management at the University of Minnesota and his J.D. from William Mitchell College of Law.

Sue LeGareSue LeGare Hired as Administrative Assistant in Natural Resources Department
Sue LeGare has just been named as Senior Administrative Specialist in the Natural Resources Department at the University of Minnesota, Crookston according to Dr. Dan Svedarsky, department head.  LeGare will assist with promoting the department, working with department faculty and students, web page monitoring, budgeting and other administrative support duties.

LeGare is a Crookston native and a graduate of both UMC and the Carlson School of Management on the Twin Cities campus where she majored in marketing.  Before returning to Crookston with her husband David, she was an account executive with Lexmark International, Inc. in Bloomington.  She is a graduate of the Dale Carnegie Human Relations program and was president of the UMC Alumni Association in 2001-2002.

“We are fortunate to have someone of Sue’s capabilities to staff this critically important position in the department,” according to Svedarsky.  “We have a highly successful core of faculty and students and Sue will complement our efforts nicely as we strive to become one of the premier natural resources departments in the Midwest and Northern Great Plains.”

The Natural Resources Department offers programs in Horticulture, Aviation (Ag Aviation, Natural Resources Aviation, and Law Enforcement Aviation), Golf and Turf Management, and Natural Resources (Wildlife Management, Park Management, Natural Resources Law Enforcement, Natural Resources Management, and Water Resource Management).  There are approximately 200 majors in the Department where the employment outlook is brighter than it has been in years. This is due to a wave of impending retirements with agency personnel and the increase in retiring baby boomers that are focusing more on landscaping their homes, outdoor recreation of all sorts, and spending more time on the golf course.
