The Grad Planner is a web-based tool to give students better planning options for timely graduation; it is a system-level web project that will extend to all campuses and streamline a variety of existing student information systems.  The grad planner lets students plan for four years, based on up-to-date database of majors and on the student's own record of courses already completed.  It also lets them try out "what if" scenarios for future planning, such as trying different majors and seeing how long it would take to graduate, based on the courses they have already taken.  The planner also provides information for advising and for administrative planning. The grad planner will build on information available in the APAS system but put it into a semester-based framework to allow students to plan semester-by-semester; it adds a time dimension to APAS.

Program Curriculum Approval System (PCAS) will be the automated step-by-step review process through which new or changed academic programs to be offered by any college or campus of the University of Minnesota receive approvals, leading to endorsement by the Executive Vice President and Provost (EVPP) and a recommendation for approval by the Board of Regents.  PCAS will house all the programmatic information required for different degrees.  It is a way of capturing in one place specific degree requirements.  This information will be fed electronically to the catalogue, APAS, and the Grad Planner.  It will be a basic reference for advisors so that they will have immediate access to current degree requirements in majors.--Joe Massey, CEO and Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs

Relay for Life June 17-18
The Relay for Life will be held on the UMC campus June 17-18.  It begins about 6 p.m. on the 17th and ends at 6 a.m. on the 18th.  The Relay is a way to raise money for the American Cancer Society and also hopes to make people more aware of how cancer affects the lives of so many people.  UMC has a team “UMC Golden Eagles: Soaring for a Cure” that will be out here walking all night.  We will have a silent auction at our camp site and we are selling luminaries.  If anyone would like to purchase a luminary in honor of someone who has cancer or in memory of someone who has passed away from cancer, please contact one of the team members.  So far the team members are:

  • Michelle and Trish Ramstad, Co-Chairs

  • Brandy and Brad Chaffee and Devin Berger

  • Stephanie Helgeson

  • John and Julie Magnuson

  • Karen Murphy

  • Jacquie Normandin

  • Amy Peterson

  • Barbara Ricord

  • John and Jesse Rodseth

  • Gayle Schuster

  • Jodi Steiner

  • Pam Sullivan

  • Kathy Twite

  • Linda Wilkens

If you would like to be a member of the team or have questions, please contact any UMC team member.  There will be entertainment and speakers all night long with the lighting of the luminaries about 9:30 p.m.  Everyone is invited to come and walk the walk and enjoy the food and entertainment even if they are not on the team.  We would love to have a big show from UMC!

UMC Centennial LogoThank You
Dear Faculty and Staff,
Thanks to all of you who participated in Saturday’s UMC commencement.  The level of faculty participation far exceeded any in my experience at the U of M and my former school.  I can say with confidence that the participation level sent a strong message to our regent of commitment of the faculty to UMC and its students.  He implied so in his public remarks and later when he and I met.

The reception and tour of the new student center went well.  Both were heavily attended and I received many comments from folks who attended.

Again, thank you for your participation in commencement and your show of support to our graduating students.
--Joe Massey, CEO and Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs

May 3
Marvin Windows and Doors, the Warroad, Minnesota-based manufacturer of premier wood and clad wood windows and doors, held commencement exercises for its Northern Lights University (NLU) program on Tuesday, May 3, at the Warroad High School Auditorium.  This is Marvin’s 5th Commencement Exercises in its unique educational partnership with Northwest Technical College (NTC) and the University of Minnesota, Crookston (UMC) that enables its employees to pursue an associate or bachelor’s degree onsite at Marvin’s corporate headquarters in Warroad.  Faculty members from NTC and UMC travel to Warroad two days a week to teach the lecture/lab courses.

John G. Batten, Rebecca Pederson, Charles Jay Sorenson, and Neomie Ann Lystad Wilemon received their Associate of Science degree in Supervisory Leadership from NTC.  Raymond L. Isleman and Steven Josephson earned a Bachelor of Manufacturing Management degree from UMC.  Two of these Marvin employees spoke as representatives from their college programs: John Batten – NTC and Steve Josephson – UMC.

This ceremony bought together officials from the University of Minnesota and Minnesota State Colleges and Universities (MnSCU), including MnSCU AVC Strategic Partnerships Michael Murphy; University of Minnesota Regent Clyde Allen, Jr.; UMC CEO Dr. Joe Massey; UMC Vice Chancellor Academic Affairs Dr. Richard Nelson; Bemidji State University/NTC President Jon Quistgaard; NTC Vice President Custom Training Services Dr. Mary Eaton; and Minnesota State Community and Technical College Chief Academic Officer Dr. Pat Wilber.  Guest speakers from Marvin Windows and Doors included:  Peggy Ann Anderholm, Manager of Education and Workforce Development and Susan Marvin, President.

To date, 70 employees have graduated (1998, 2002, 2003, and 2004) from Marvin’s NLU program which has included: 30 from UMC’s Bachelor of Manufacturing program, 13 from NTC’s Business Microcomputer diploma program, 13 from NTC’s Supervisory Leadership Certificate or AAS programs, and 14 from NTC’s Manufacturing Engineering Technology Certificate or AAS programs. These alumni have been invited back for this 10th year celebration.  This partnership between Marvin Windows and Doors, NTC, and UMC was recognized nationally at the 2004 ASTD International Conference and Exposition with an award of Excellence in Practice Citation in the Workplace Development category.  The American Society of Training and Development is the world’s largest professional training organization.

Summer Voice Mail Messages
Faculty and staff who are on 9- and 10-month contracts are reminded to create a new message for their voice mail messaging system.  If you do not plan to be on campus often or do not plan to check your voice mail messages from home, please leave a message that states so and provide a forwarding phone number of a faculty or staff person who can take incoming calls.  You may also want to leave your personal forwarding summer phone number.  A possible example of such a message would be:

“Hi you’ve reached the voice mail of Jane Doe at UMC.  During the summer I will not be checking my voice mail messages on a regular basis.  If you need immediate assistance, please contact John Doe at extension XXXX or dial 0 for the campus switchboard.  [Optional:  If you need to contact me personally, you can try my home number, XXX-XXXX].  I will be back on campus full-time on August XX.  Have a great summer.”

Directions for setting messages on the phone system are posted online at <www.umcrookston.edu/facilities/phonesystemflow.htm>.

Printing & Design Summer Schedule
Patti Tiedemann’s (designer) last day in the office will be Wednesday, May 11.  She will be returning Monday, August 1.*

Linda Wilken’s (printer) last day in the office will be Wednesday, June 15.  She will be returning Monday, August 1.*

During the time between May 11 and June 15, Linda will be able to assist you in printing items that have already been designed and that do not need any updating.

Sue Dwyer has moved to the Development Office and is no longer a part of the Printing & Design Department.  Because of this move, we now have only one designer on campus.  We want to keep an orderly flow of work projects and will do everything we can to help you with your design and printing needs.  We ask, however, that you plan ahead.  Please allow 3-5 working days for a design project such as a poster, raffle tickets, invitations, brochure, etc.  Please allow 10-14 days for design of larger projects, such as media guides, handbooks, etc.  Printing time should also be planned ahead.  Linda will be able to print jobs that are copy ready on the same day.  However, when printing a large project, such as a media guide or handbook, she would like to have 1-2 weeks to fit them into her schedule.  This includes printing, folding, assembling, stapling, trimming, binding, etc.  If everyone plans ahead, we will be able to complete all your projects in a timely manner.  Thank you for planning ahead!

*If you need design work and printing during the time Patti and Linda are gone from campus, please contact Patti at Home: 281-6248, Cell: 289-0203, Lake: 687-3752.  She will be happy to help you find an appropriate place to get your design and printing jobs completed.
