Presentation April 27 by Julie Sweitzer
I am very pleased to invite you to a presentation by the University of Minnesota Director of Equal Opportunity and Affirmative Action, Julie Sweitzer.  At 2:30 p.m. on Wednesday, April 27 in Brown Dining Room she will be presenting, “The Power of Respect” to our campus.  The presentation will address gender equity on college campuses.  In her words, “We will explore how simple words can have a significant impact, and our goal of an inclusive, supportive campus climate.”

Comedy “Dearly Departed” April 27-29
The University of Minnesota, Crookston Music-Theater Department and the Crookston Community Theatre is producing the comedy “Dearly Departed” by David Botell and Jessie Jones on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday, April 27, 28, and 29 at 7:30 p.m. in the Kiehle Auditorium on the UMC Campus.

The story line revolves around the Turpin family who live in Mississippi.  When the patriarch of the Turpin family, Bud, keels over dead at the breakfast table, the clan struggles to get him buried.  The resulting funeral brings to light many hilarious family problems that overshadow the solemn occasion.

The Wednesday, April 27 performance is free for UMC students.  The Thursday and Friday performances are $1 for UMC students.  The admission price for the show is $8 or by season ticket.  Tickets are available at Montague’s Flower Shop in Crookston and also at the door.

UMC Awards:  Outstanding Community Service
Nomination Deadline April 28
This award was first presented in 1999 to recognize the contributions UMC faculty and staff make within the larger community of Crookston and the region.  Individuals who receive this award are truly bridge builders who understand that UMC is not an island, but an integral part of northwest Minnesota.  They freely and openly share their talents and gifts, adding value to the entire region and reinforcing UMC's outreach mission.

The award has been presented to the following UMC faculty and staff:

  • 2004 - Dennis Magsam, Audiovisual Operations Manager, Media Services

  • 2003 - Laurie Wilson, Counselor and Assistant Education Specialist

  • 2003 - Pam Holsinger-Fuchs, Director of Student Activities and Service Learning

  • 2002 - George French, Associate Professor of Music

  • 2001 - Pam Sullivan, Senior Cashier, Dining Services

  • 2000 - Carol Larson, Building and Grounds Worker, Facilities Management

  • 1999 - Nancy Capistran, Lab Services Coordinator, Biology

The Community Service Award was created to honor community outreach and community service activities of faculty, staff, and members of the great University community.  This award recognizes outstanding contributions and accomplishments of faculty, staff or community members who have devoted their time and talent to make substantial enduring contributions to the external community and to improve public life and the well being of society.  Such contributions and accomplishments must result in long-term and lasting changes for the public good and demonstrate an unusual commitment to the University and the greater community.  Awards are not intended to recognize service provided to a professional association or to recognize other service normally seen as part of their responsibility as an employee of the University of Minnesota.

The Community Service Award is given each year for the University of Minnesota, Crookston campus.  Recognition of this award and a $500 scholarship is given in the name of the award winner.  All faculty and staff are eligible to receive this award.

Any person or group may make a nomination.  Please submit the name or names of individuals along with a brief statement as to why these persons are worthy of receiving the award by April 28, 2005.  Nominations can be submitted to the Community Service Award Committee, c/o Pam Holsinger-Fuchs, 117 Dowell Hall or e-mail Pam at psholsing@umn.edu.
