Great Conversations Series Continues April 19
Allan Isaacman  Graca Machel
The Great Conversations series continues Tuesday, April 19, at 7:30 p.m. in 220 Dowell Hall.  The conversation “The Struggle and Hope for Southern Africa” is free and open to the public.  Join Allan Isaacman and Graca Machel, inspiring advocates for human rights; discuss the ravages of war on its most innocent victims with a renowned scholar of African history.

Allan Isaacman is Regents Professor of History at the University of Minnesota.  He has spent the past 30 years conducting research, writing, and teaching African history.  A prolific author, his many publications include Cotton is the Mother of Poverty and Mozambique: The Africanization of a European Institution, winner of the Melville Herkovits Award for most distinguished publication in African studies.  He is also the founding Director of the MacArthur Interdisciplinary Center for the Study of Global Change, Sustainability, and Justice which has brought graduate students to the University from all over the developing world.  Among his many awards, Professor Isaacman was named Scholar of the College and received a Distinguished Teaching Award from the College of Liberal Arts and a University Alumni Association Teaching Award.

Graca Machel is the former first lady of Mozambique.  An internationally recognized human rights advocate, she was appointed by the United Nations to produce the groundbreaking study and subsequent book The Impact of War on Children.  She is currently President of the Foundation for Community Development in Mozambique and Chancellor of the University of Cape Town.

The event is sponsored by UMC Concerts & Lectures.  For further information, visit the “Great Conversations” website at <www.cce.umn.edu/conversations/>.

Campus Showdown 2004Campus Showdown April 20
On Wednesday, April 20, at 8 p.m. in Kiehle Auditorium, the CSA Executive Board will host the third annual Faculty/Staff vs. Students Campus Showdown.  For the past two years the students have taken away the trophy and won!  We are hoping this year you maybe will get a chance to win.  We are looking for volunteers and help.  This is a great event to get more involved with the students!

Some of the competitive events include:  Pictionary, Battle of the Bands, Book Race (who can carry the most books across the stage the fastest), and Family Feud.  You can form your own team for some of the events, so start talking and get your teams together.  If you are interested in participating in any of these events, please contact me at roer0034@umn.edu.  All who participate get free t-shirts!
--Deann Roers, Crookston Student Association President

Wellness Walk April 21
Come and join us Thursday, April 21, at 12 noon in the Kiehle Rotunda for a Wellness Walk.  We are planning on taking a mile long walk around the campus.  We are hoping to get at least 30 people to join us so we can walk “30 miles in 30 minutes!”  There will be free food and water, along with plenty of useful wellness focused information.  Bring a friend, grab your tennis shoes and head on over to the Kiehle Rotunda and spend your noon hour getting some fresh air.  We will walk in Lysaker Gymnasium in case of inclement weather.  Hope to see you there!

Help Support the ASPIRE Scholarship April 25
Please consider using your talents to support the ASPIRE Scholarship.  ASPIRE was designed to help women in transition, and you are invited to bring your homemade goodies to help stock a bake sale in support of the ASPIRE Scholarship fund.

The bake sale will take place on Monday, April 25, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Sahlstrom Conference Center entrance.  We are especially looking for goodies that are ready to “grab and go” like cookies, bars, rolls, puppy chow, or similar treats, but will happily accept any goodies for our bake sale.

If you are interested in participating, let Laurie Wilson know at lwilson@umn.edu, and please bring baked goods to Lisa Loegering’s office in 112 Dowell Hall no later than 9 a.m. on Monday, April 25.

Then, encourage everyone to come and get a treat to support the ASPIRE Scholarship fund!  We would like to award three scholarships next year, and your help will make that possible.  It is a great way to help benefit women returning to school.  Thank you for your help supporting our students!

Living Wills Informational Session April 27
Tamara Yon, local attorney and lecturer at UMC will present an informational session on establishing a “Living Will.”  The presentation is scheduled for Wednesday, April 27, at 3 p.m. in 308 Selvig Hall.  Anyone interested in learning more about Living Wills may attend.  There is no charge for this session.

ASK EHS:  Are pets allowed in University buildings?
Concerns have been forwarded to the Department of Environmental Health and Safety with regard to pets and other animals being brought into buildings on campus.  The University does not allow animals inside buildings unless they are fall within the guidelines of the following University-wide policy.

The University of Minnesota “Policy on Unauthorized Animals or Pets in University Buildings or on the Grounds recognizes that certain animals are important to the University community.  Approved animals are managed under the guidance of the Animal Care Committee, Veterinary School, or College of Agriculture.  Seeing Eye and hearing aide dogs are allowed, by law, access to University buildings.  Under “special circumstances” an animal may be permitted access to buildings and grounds with prior approval.  All requests for approval must be forwarded to the Department of Environmental Health and Safety prior to the event.

All other animals and personal pets, including dogs and cats, fall under this policy statement.  “In order to minimize unnecessary maintenance, sanitation problems, and classroom distraction, no unauthorized animals and pets will be allowed in University buildings.  When pets are walked across University grounds, the standards established in the animal control ordinances or legislative codes of the local community will prevail.”

The City of Crookston Code Book, p222, states that no owner shall allow their pet to “run at large” and must be secured to a collar and durable leash.  If a dog (pet) defecates outside of the owner’s personal property, the owner is responsible to immediately remove the waste and dispose of it in a sanitary manner.  (All pets must be on a leash while on campus grounds.)

Aquariums are allowed in dormitory rooms according to the UMC Residential Life Policy Manual.

Individuals who bring unauthorized animals into University buildings will be asked to remove them. Repeated violators may be subject to the disciplinary procedures outlined in the Student Code of Conduct, or applicable employment rules. The animal(s) may be removed by the local animal control officials.

The full policy may be viewed at: http://www.dehs.umn.edu/policies/unauthorized.html

Questions about the policy or to request permission under the “special circumstances” clause, please contact Tom Feiro, EHS Specialist, Department of Environmental Health and Safety, #2 Kiser Building, phone: 281-8300 or tfeiro@umn.edu.
