College campuses across
this nation are seeing significant increases in the number of students
with psychological and emotional disabilities who enroll in classes.
Too often, it can be a revolving door for students since campuses and
college personnel often lack the necessary preparation and resources to
keep these students in school, and students are often reluctant to seek
services that do exist.
Join us as we “explore
the barriers and opportunities for college students with psychiatric
disabilities.” Participants will learn about the specific barriers these
students face and potential strategies to remove these barriers. A
facilitated discussion will also address issues related to reasonable
accommodations in the classroom and in internships and how campuses can
better coordinate existing services. This workshop is co-sponsored by
the U of M TC Disability Services Office, the UMC Office for Students
with Disabilities, and the UMC Office for Human Resources.

Aid Director Interview Session February 16

Hall.
15-Passenger
Van Training February 24 in 102 Hill
The University of Minnesota does
not allow employees or students to drive a 15-passenger van unless they
have completed a safety certification course. This policy applies to
vans owned by the University and rented from an outside source!
There will be no exceptions to this policy! UMC Facilities
Management will not allow vans to be checked out unless reserved by
certified drivers.
If you may be asked to
drive a 15-passenger van as part of your position’s responsibilities,
for a class, field trip, club activity, community service or athletic
event, you must complete this training. Advisors and work study
supervisors, please contact any students that may need this training to
assist you.
-
(If you have
previously completed the training, you do not need to attend again.)
-
(If you watched a
video training session since September 2004, you must attend this live
presentation to receive full certification.)
Training is provided by
Bill Roberts, Director of UM Fleet Services. He has an excellent
training program full of important information for all drivers. Please
arrange schedules so that those who need the training can attend on:
Thursday, February
24, 1 to 3 p.m., 102 Hill Hall (note room change)
This will be the
only time the training is provided during the 2005 Spring Semester!
Pre-registration is
suggested. For questions and registration, please contact Tom Feiro,
Environmental Health & Safety at 281-8300 or via e-mail at

Undergraduate
Research Opportunities Program (UROP)
Application Deadline March 7
UROP
application material for projects May 23, 2005 through June 30, 2005
(Intersession) or July 1, 2005 through June 15, 2006 is now available in
the Academic Affairs Office. The maximum award is $1,700 – stipend up
to $1,400 (hourly rate is $11.50) and expense allowance up to $300.
Completed applications are due in the Academic Affairs Office by 4:30
p.m. on March 7, 2005. Deadline is firm; late applications will not be
accepted. The Undergraduate Research Opportunities program offers
financial awards to full-time undergraduate students for research,
scholarly, or creative projects undertaken in partnership with a faculty
member. UROP affords undergraduates the unique educational experience
of collaborating with a faculty member on the design and implementation
of a project. At the same time, faculty members have the opportunity to
work closely with students and receive valuable assistance with their
own research or professional activity. UROP encourages students to
conduct research and pursue academic interests outside of their regular
courses by employing them to work on special projects. Projects are
expected to contribute to the student’s academic development. UROP
applications are judged on the: quality of the proposed project,
strength of collaboration with faculty sponsor, educational benefit to
the student.

2, 2005 edition.
Thank You
The UMC football staff would like
to thank all administration, faculty, and staff who volunteered their
weekends during the months of December and January to visit with
prospective student-athletes. During the past two months, over 53
prospective student-athlete football players have visited our campus on
weekends. As of today, the UMC football team has added 20
student-athletes for the upcoming school year. In addition, we have
verbal commitments from 5 other players.
The recruiting process
is far from over, but because of the great support from administration,
faculty, and staff at UMC, we are off to a good start. Thanks for your
continued support.
--Shannon Stassen
Accolades
Congratulations to Don and
Mary Cavalier. They were recognized by the City of Crookston at the
recent City Council meeting with a couple’s volunteer award for all
their service. Congratulations Cavaliers!
Joshua
Johnson from Elbow Lake, MN was chosen as the True Grit Award winner
at Ag-Arama 2005. The True Grit Award is the most coveted of all awards
presented at Ag-Arama. The True Grit Award is dedicated to Todd Opsahl,
a student in 1973-74. Most of the students and faculty around Todd did
not know that he was suffering from terminal leukemia, a disease that
took his life shortly after he left college. Despite this condition,
Todd was extremely active in campus activities, especially in the
Agriculture Division, where he studied Animal Science. In his
remembrance, the True Grit Award is presented annually to the student
who best demonstrated the spirit of Todd Opsahl in active participation
and in encouraging others to participate. Congratulations Josh on
receiving this great honor.
Congratulations
to the Facilities & Operations Management office, first place
winners of the Sno Daze “Almost ParadICE” office decorating contest!

The Black Mountain Male Chorus of Wales will perform as part of the
Crookston Artist Series on Sunday, February 20, at 2 p.m. in the
Crookston High School Auditorium. The group consists of twenty-two
singers, following in the great male chorus tradition of Wales. Their
average age is 25 years and the singers are drawn from the top music
schools, the National Youth Choir and young soloists who are taking the
first rung on the ladder to a professional career. A wide-ranging
program of Welsh hymns, ballads, and lilting airs includes Llinos
Daniel, vocalist, who also plays the hart and is featured in several
pieces. The program also will include some contemporary British music,
songs from Scotland and Ireland, and, of course, some light American
music. This is a highly entertaining show for all ages.
