Meals on
Wheels Drivers Needed February 14-18
Three times a year we are asked
to help out a very worthwhile program, Meals on Wheels. Our next
week to deliver meals is February 14 through February 18, 2005. Meals
need to be picked up at the Education Entrance of Riverview Hospital at
11:30 a.m. The deliveries usually take about 30 minutes. You can
expect to be back at UMC by 12:15 p.m. If you aren’t all that familiar
with Crookston, don’t worry! You are provided with a map and very
specific directions. Grab a friend to help navigate!
The Meals on Wheels
program allows the elderly more independence by allowing them to stay in
their homes longer. This program can’t run without volunteers like
you! The recipients are extremely grateful for this service. If you
are able to help out, either sign up on the form at the Dowell Info
Desk, or just let me know what day(s) work best for you and I will sign
you up! Thanks very much!

College campuses across
this nation are seeing significant increases in the number of students
with psychological and emotional disabilities who enroll in classes.
Too often, it can be a revolving door for students since campuses and
college personnel often lack the necessary preparation and resources to
keep these students in school, and students are often reluctant to seek
services that do exist.
Join us as we “explore
the barriers and opportunities for college students with psychiatric
disabilities.” Participants will learn about the specific barriers these
students face and potential strategies to remove these barriers. A
facilitated discussion will also address issues related to reasonable
accommodations in the classroom and in internships and how campuses can
better coordinate existing services. This workshop is co-sponsored by
the U of M TC Disability Services Office, the UMC Office for Students
with Disabilities, and the UMC Office for Human Resources.
The presenters:
Barbara Blacklock holds a masters degree
in Rehabilitation Counseling and is licensed by the State of Minnesota,
as an Independent Social Worker (LISW). She has worked in Disability
Services at the University of Minnesota for the past 25 years and has
presented locally, nationally and internationally on disability issues.
Ms. Blacklock was recently the Project Director of a FIPSE grant
designed to identify the barriers and opportunities for college students
with psychiatric disabilities, through the University of Minnesota. She
is the co-chair of the AHEAD Special Interest Group (SIG) on
Students with Psychological Disabilities and was recently awarded the
AHEAD Professional Recognition Award (2001). Ms. Blacklock is the
co-author of an article, The Emergence of
Students with Psychiatric Disabilities in the
Postsecondary Setting, a Research
to Practice Brief for the National Center on Postsecondary Education
Supports (2004).
Betty Benson holds a PhD in Educational
Psychology and two masters’ degrees in education. Her research
interests include writing assessment, strategies for improving campus
climate for students with psychiatric disabilities, and transition
issues related to postsecondary education for students with
disabilities. She has worked in Disability Services at the University
of Minnesota for 7 years. She has also lived and taught in two foreign
countries and has a broad range of experience in teaching, training, and
curriculum design. She was recently the Project Consultant for a FIPSE
grant designed to identify the barriers and opportunities for college
students with psychiatric disabilities, through the University of
Minnesota. Dr. Benson is the co-author of an article, The Emergence
of Students with Psychiatric
Disabilities in the Postsecondary Setting,
a Research to Practice Brief for the National Center on Postsecondary
Education Supports (2004).

civil rights activist Martin Luther King’s life will punctuate the free,
90-minute concert. “Music for Martin,” co-produced by the University of
