Global
Student Fair February 2
On
Wednesday, February 2, there will be opportunities for UMC students to
hear and visit with other UMC students that participated in a Learning
Abroad experience the past year. Our goal at UMC is to continue to
increase the number of UMC students studying abroad from 5% for the
past year to 50% within four years. Hopefully, we will see the study
abroad experience integrated into each UMC major within the next year
and all students at UMC have heard about Study Abroad from their
faculty advisor and from other UMC students. This has become a
priority of the University of Minnesota Board of Regents. We are
making great strides but need your support and encouragement of UMC
students to strengthen this important learning objective.
On February 2, there
will be booths in the Eagles Nest staffed by UMC students ready to share
their respective Study Abroad experiences. In Dowell 120, each half
hour students will be making study abroad presentations. Damien
Marshall from the American Field Study will also have a booth and
will be speaking in Dowell. There are signs on campus promoting the
event but a word of encouragement from you to students in your classes
encouraging them to participate would be very helpful. Rae French and I
will be available in Sahlstrom and Dowell. Also, we would like to
make a short presentation in class if you deem appropriate. And of
course we are available in Hill to visit with any faculty or student
about the many opportunities in the Study Abroad area.

Event: “Can I Kiss You?” February 2
Mike Domitrz will present “Can I
Kiss You?” on Wednesday, February 2 at 4 p.m. in Brown Dining Room and
again at 8 p.m. in Kiehle Auditorium. Mike Domitrz, a leading authority
on consent, healthy dating, and sexual assault awareness, understands
that students want to be entertained. They want a compelling and
powerful program that each of them can relate to in a meaningful
manner. For this reason, Mike takes each audience on a journey from
hysterical laughter to hard-hitting questions followed with
thought-provoking answers. He has a gift of knowing how to relate with
each person in the audience, males and females. He even encourages
students to argue against his views and ideas.
The community and
surrounding area are invited to come and hear this fun, interactive, and
thought-provoking presentation focusing on why and how “respect” and
“asking first” make all the difference. Tickets for the event are
$2.00; UMC students are free.

Great
Conversations Series Continues February 8

The Great Conversations series continues Tuesday, February 8, at 7:30
p.m. in 220 Dowell Hall. The conversation “Gender and Race in
Medical Treatment” is free and open to the public. Join Anne Taylor
and Vivian Pinn, two leading figures in women’s health, as they discuss
the debate over the relevance of race in determining preventive medicine
and the disparities in access to quality health care for patients
determined by gender and ethnicity.
Anne Taylor
is Professor of Cardiology, Associate Dean of the Medical School, and
Director of the University of Minnesota's National Center for Excellence
in Women's Health. From 2001-2004, she was Director of the Association
of Black Cardiologists Women's Health Center. She chaired the first
national clinical study on heart failure in African Americans which lead
to the first drug developed specifically for a single ethnic group and
ignited a debate on the relevance of race in determining medical
treatment. She is the author of The African American Woman's Guide to
a Healthy Heart, which addresses gender and race disparities in
access to quality healthcare.
Vivian Pinn
is the Director of the Office of Research on Women's Health at the
National Institutes of Health, a post she has held since 1991. She came
to the NIH from Howard University College of Medicine where she had been
Professor and Chair of the Department of Pathology since 1982. Dr. Pinn
has long been active in efforts to improve the health and career
opportunities for women and minorities. She is the recipient of numerous
awards including the James D. Bruce Memorial Award for distinguished
contributions in preventive medicine from The American College of
Physicians, the Athena Award from the Partnership for Women's Health at
Columbia University, and the Catherine McFarland Award from the
University of Pennsylvania for distinguished service in women's health.
