A
cappella Group, Chapter 6, to Perform at UMC January 19

A cappella group Chapter 6 will perform Wednesday, January 19, at 8
p.m. in Kiehle Auditorium. Chapter 6 is quickly becoming one of the
most sought-after and critically acclaimed groups in the a cappella
music industry. Since their professional debut in 2001, this group
from the Chicago area has received numerous awards and recognition for
their technique, performance, and their unique original arrangements.
In 2002, Chapter 6 became the youngest group to ever win the Chicago
Harmony Sweepstakes, and has held the champion title for three
consecutive terms. In 2004, the group went on to win the prestigious
Grand Champion title at the National Harmony Sweepstakes. Other
special honors have been awarded by such notable organizations as the
Contemporary A Cappella Society, the National Association for Campus
activities, and the Association for the Promotion of Campus
Activities. Chapter 6’s comedy-infused blend of pop, jazz, gospel,
and rock brings spontaneous bursts of laughter and applause throughout
their performances. Their concerts feature a diverse repertoire
ranging from freshly-arranged swing standards and covers, to signature
pieces such as “Ode to Krispy Kreme,” Queen’s “Bohemian Rhapsody,” and
crowd-favorite, “The Wizard of Oz.” For more information, visit their
web site at <http://www.chapter-6.com/>.

Northwest
Research and Outreach Center News

Ryan Altepeter, utility worker,
received the annual Employee of the Year Award at the Northwest Research
and Outreach Center (NWROC). Ryan has been employed at the Center since
1999 in the maintenance area. Ryan gets called on to fix everything
from barn cleaners to door latches.
Ryan was nominated for
this award by his co-workers because of his knowledge of his job, his
friendliness, and his willingness to help other employees.
The NWROC Employee of
the Year Award was designated to promote and recognize excellence in job
performance among Civil Service and Bargaining Unit personnel. Funds
for this special award come from a President’s Club donation designated
specifically for this purpose. Congratulations, Ryan.

Cori Hollingsworth, who is attending Bemidji State University,
received the 7th Annual Sandra M. Smith Scholarship Award.
Cori is a transfer student from Wyoming studying chemistry with
criminalistics emphasis. Upon graduation, Cori would like to work as a
forensic chemist in a state crime laboratory. She currently has a 3.9
GPA. Cori worked on the entomology project at the NWROC the past two
summers. She is the daughter of Ray and Charla Hollingsworth of
Crookston. Charla is an assistant professor of plant pathology – small
grains at the Northwest Research and Outreach Center.

Drug Companies Offer
Prescription Savings to Uninsured
Ten pharmaceutical companies have
arranged for persons and families without health insurance to save from
25 to 40 percent of 275 brand-name prescriptions drugs, and the U.S.
Department of Health and Human Services announced recently that it
supports the initiative. See <http://www.healthinschools.org/2005/jan11_alert.asp>.
Weather
Related Campus Closing Policy
The primary premise for
weather-related closings of the University of Minnesota, Crookston is
that the institution will remain open unless there is unreasonable risk
or danger to a substantial number of students and/or employees due to
extremely hazardous driving conditions within close proximity to the
campus.
Highways 2 and 75 are
the primary roads leading to the campus and are the roads most
frequently closed due to weather related causes. The road closure
sign in Crookston for west/north bound traffic is located near Pizza
Hut/Northland Inn. At East Grand Forks the road closure sign for
eastbound traffic is located near the Riverbend Supper Club west of the
highway 2 and 220 junction. Failure to obey these “road closure”
signs can result in a substantial fine as well as injury or death.
Area radio and TV stations provide timely information on road conditions
and on road closures and should be considered a primary source of
information for students, faculty, and staff.
Information about road
conditions can also be found online at: Minnesota Department of
Transportation Current Weather Conditions
http://www.511mn.org/
North Dakota Road Conditions
http://www.state.nd.us/dot/roadreport/roadreport/roadreport.asp
If that portion of
Highway 2 & 75 immediately in front (west) of the UMC campus is closed,
the campus will be closed and only
designated critical employees are to report to work or remain at work,
unless specifically informed by their supervisors not to report.
The campus will
generally not close for weather related conditions if Highway 2 &
75 is open to traffic (i.e., not officially closed by law enforcement
agencies or the Minnesota Department of Transportation).
Announcements about
campus closings will be made to the following media outlets:
RADIO:
KROX (AM 1260) Crookston; KKXL - XL93 (FM 92.9) Grand Forks; KYCK
(FM 97) Grand Forks, KNOX (AM1310) Grand Forks
TELEVISION:
KXJB (Channel 4); WDAZ (Channel 8); KBRR (Channel 10); KVLY (Channel
11)
The complete UMC
Campus Emergency Closing Policies and Procedures statement can
be accessed at: <http://www.UMCrookston.edu/campusinfo/policies/closing.htm>.
