Legislative Luncheon Wednesday, December 18
UMC will host a legislative luncheon this coming Wednesday, December 18, at noon in Brown Dining Room of Sahlstrom Conference Center.   The following Minnesota lawmakers are expected to attend:  Sen. Stumpf, Sen. Skoe, Rep. Lieder, Rep. Lanning, Rep. Penas, Rep. Eken, and Rep. Lindgren.   The purpose of the luncheon is to provide these legislators with information about UMC so they have a better understanding of the campus and its mission when they go into the legislative session next year.

Returning Student Scholarships
The 2003-2004 Specialty Scholarship Workbooks will be placed into our students’ on-campus mailboxes by December 20.  Please encourage all students to apply, since there are hundreds of scholarships to be awarded.

Returning students may apply from January 9 through February 7.  Students will need to fill out the Specialty Scholarship workbook and bring it and any supporting materials to the One Stop Student Service Center, 170 Owen Hall.  We will have our Specialty Scholarship database set up for them to enter in their information.  In addition, students are required to have their booklet and summary completed prior to database application.  If any of you have any questions about this process, please don't hesitate to ask.  Thanks and enjoy the holidays!

U of M Outstanding Community Service Awards:  Nominations Due February 14, 2003
I am pleased to announce the fifth annual Outstanding Community Service Awards to honor outstanding community service activities of faculty, staff, and members of the greater University community.  This award recognizes outstanding contributions and accomplishments of faculty, staff or University-affiliated community members who have devoted their time and talent to make substantial, enduring contributions to the external community and to improve public life and the well-being of society.  Such contributions and accomplishments must result in long-term and lasting changes for the public good and demonstrate an unusual commitment to the University and greater community.

The Outstanding Community Service Award emphasizes the importance of external community service and recognizes the role of faculty and staff that is over and above the expectations of their regular position description.   Awards given to faculty or staff will also recognize the agency or group with which the recipient of the award is affiliated.  Community members who receive the award will have made a significant public service or public engagement contribution through an affiliation with the University of Minnesota.

Approximately five Outstanding Community Service Awards will be given this year. Awards given to faculty and staff will carry a continuous salary award annually during their employment at the University of Minnesota.  All faculty and staff at the University are eligible to receive this award: tenured and tenure-track faculty, adjunct or contract faculty, academic professional and administrative staff, civil service staff, and bargaining unit staff.  In addition, community members affiliated with the University of Minnesota may be nominated.

Any person or group may make a nomination.  Please submit the original and 12 copies of nomination materials by Friday, February 14, 2003, to the Outstanding Community Service Awards Committee, c/o Sue Engelmann, Room 234 Morrill Hall.  The format consists of a letter of nomination summarizing the scope and impact of the nominee's community service and three letters of support focusing on personal knowledge of the nominee's exceptional community service.  The award criteria include:  (1) evidence of solid accomplishments in the area of public policy and/or public service that contribute to the quality of life at the local, regional, state, national, or international level; (2) contributions that result in long-term and lasting changes for the public good; and (3) demonstrated commitment to the University and the greater Minnesota community.

I encourage your nominations for the Outstanding Community Service Award to help recognize and honor our many important contributions to public engagement and community service.  If you need further information, please contact Sue Engelmann at 626-9186 or engel026@umn.edu.  For further information, you may also log onto our website at <www1.umn.edu/civic>.  Thank you.

VolunTEAM Update
VolunTEAM Logo
This week’s featured Crookston VolunTEAM project is delivering Meals on Wheels in Crookston. UMC has committed to delivering the meals during the week of January 13-17, 2003. It’s a rewarding experience that’s more fun if you deliver them with a friend. It involves picking up the hot and cold coolers at Riverview Hospital at 11:30 a.m. and then delivering them to the addresses marked on the map. Depending on how much you chat with the meal recipients, it can take anywhere from 25 minutes to an hour to deliver the meals and return the coolers to Riverview. During UMC’s week, we need six drivers per day.

THIS IS AN URGENT NEED! THERE WON’T BE MUCH TIME TO FILL THE DELIVERY SLOTS ONCE BREAK IS OVER!

If you’re interested in helping out, or simply want to know more about the project, please contact Mike Christopherson in the Crookston VolunTEAM office (Bede 106) at 281-8526, email Mike at chris282@umcrookston.edu, or simply sign up at the Bede Info Desk. If you’re interested in learning more about the Crookston VolunTEAM, please visit www.volunteam.org.
