USA Today - NCAA AwardUMC Recognized for Gains in Student-Athlete Graduation Rates
UMC is one of ten colleges participating in Division II of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) to be recognized by USA Today for the “Highest Student-Athlete Graduation Rate Improvement.”  The recognition came with the recent announcement of the 2002 USA Today/NCAA Academic Achievement Awards.

UMC improved its graduation rate for student-athletes by 44 percentage points when comparing freshmen entering in 1994 with freshmen entering in 1995.  According to USA Today, rankings in this survey are determined by federal graduation-rate forms used by schools in Divisions I and II.  They are for freshmen who entered in the fall of 1995 and had six years to graduate.  Each school offering athletic scholarships is required to complete these forms annually.  There are 270 NCAA Division II schools.

UMC Holiday Tour of Lights Starts December 6
Rigging the mall with lights
UMC will hold its First Annual Holiday Tour of Lights this year on campus.  The event features a display of holiday lights on the campus mall and will be held in conjunction with the Crookston Chamber of Commerce Winter Wonderland being held throughout the community.  The display will be lit and open to the public starting on Friday, December 6, from 7 to 10 p.m.   Admission is free.  The display of lights will continue to be open to the public on December 7, 8, 13, 14, and 15 from 5 to 10 p.m. nightly.

Many student clubs and organizations are involved with the UMC Holiday Tour of Lights and are helping promote holiday spirit in other ways as well.   Students Trevor Alt and Adam Wink with the help the Crookston Student Association and the UMC Sportsmen’s Club will lead the Holiday Tour this year.  The UMC Horticulture Club decorated the Peterson Gazebo again this year with the UMC Natural Resources Club donating the tree.  The Sportsmen’s Club will collect food donations at the Holiday Tour, and the proceeds will go to the Care and Share in Crookston.  UMC Ambassadors will provide hot chocolate, and the proceeds will also be given back to the community.

UMC Students to Show Strong Presence at Winter Wonderland December 6
UMC student clubs and organizations will play a large role in the Second Annual Crookston Chamber of Commerce/Retail Merchants Association Winter Wonderland, set for Friday, December 6.  Downtown businesses will be open from 5 to 8 p.m. that evening and will offer treats, music, and entertainment for shoppers.

Working closely with the Office of Student Activities and Service Learning, UMC students have reserved the first floor of a historic building (current location of the DFL headquarters on Broadway) on the busiest corner in downtown Crookston, and during this year’s Winter Wonderland at least ten UMC student clubs and organizations will take over the entire space.  Members of the Multicultural Club will dress up as elves and hand out candy canes.  The UMC VolunTEAM will make crafts with children for their parents.  Clovia will make gift bags and tags for children to wrap their crafts in.  The Early Childhood Club will host games.  Members of the First Year Honor Society will wrap gifts for the public.  The Dietetics Club will serve snacks and cider.  The UMC Chapter of The Wildlife Society and members of the UMC Flying Club will work on placing the luminaries.

This week’s featured Crookston VolunTEAM project can be found at an elderly woman’s home in Sampson’s Addition.  Her son typically decorates her yard with lights and garland for the holidays, but he says he’s no longer physically able to do it by himself.  He’s looking for two to four volunteers to help him one afternoon this week.

If you’re interested in helping out, or simply want to know more about the project, please contact Mike Christopherson in the Crookston VolunTEAM office (Bede 106) at 281-8526, or email Mike at chris282@umcrookston.edu. If you’re interested in learning more about the Crookston VolunTEAM, please visit www.volunteam.org.
