UMC Holiday Tour Starts December 6
The University of Minnesota, Crookston will hold its first annual Holiday Tour this year on campus.  The UMC Holiday Tour is a display of lights on the campus mall.  The display will be lit up and open to the public starting on Friday, December 6, from 7 to 10 p.m. in conjunction with the Crookston Chamber of Commerce Winter Wonderland being held throughout the community.

The display of lights will continue to be open to the public on December 7, 8, 13, 14, and 15 from 5 to 10 p.m. nightly.

Many student clubs and organizations are involved with the UMC Holiday Tour and are helping promote holiday spirit in other ways as well.   Students Trevor Alt and Adam Wink with the help the Crookston Student Association and the UMC Sportsmen’s Club will lead the Holiday Tour this year.  The UMC Horticulture Club decorated the Peterson Gazebo again this year with the UMC Natural Resources Club donating the tree.  The Sportsmen’s Club will collect food donations at the Holiday Tour, and the proceeds will go to the Care and Share in Crookston.  UMC Ambassadors will provide hot chocolate, and the proceeds will also be given back to the community.

Many clubs plan to meet on Monday, December 2, at 2 p.m. to begin decorating the mall area.  Donations to help create this new annual holiday tradition at UMC have been received from Bede Student Center, SPACE, Public Relations, Image and Marketing, Residential Life, and the Northwest School of Agriculture Alumni Association.  Thanks to everyone who has helped with the creation of this tradition.  All faculty, staff, and students are invited to help decorate the mall on Monday, December 2, at 2 p.m.  For more information, please contact Cheryl Isder

UMC to Show Strong Presence at Winter Wonderland December 6
In addition to their UMC Holiday Tour on the campus mall, UMC student clubs and organizations will play a large role in the Second Annual Crookston Chamber of Commerce/Retail Merchants Association Winter Wonderland, set for Friday, December 6.  Downtown businesses will be open from 5 to 8 p.m. that evening and will offer treats, music, and entertainment for shoppers.

Working closely with the Office of Student Activities and Service Learning, students have reserved the first floor of a historic building (current location of the DFL headquarters on Broadway) on the busiest corner in downtown Crookston, and during this year’s Winter Wonderland at least ten UMC student clubs and organizations will take over the entire space.  Hoping to add cheer to the holiday shopping experience of Crookston residents young and old, richer or poorer, the clubs will, among other things, provide free gift-wrapping, play games with kids, help children who might not be able to afford a gift for their parents make a homemade craft, serve snacks and refreshments, place luminaries along the sidewalks outside, and serve as “rovers” throughout downtown, helping shoppers carry packages, walk their children across the street, or perform other necessary duties as they arise.

For more information, contact Mike Christopherson.

Holiday Tour of Homes for Habitat December 8
On Sunday, December 8, from 3 to 7 p.m., the second annual Holiday Tour of Homes for Habitat will be held at various homes in Crookston all decked out for the holidays.  There are six homes on the tour this holiday season, and you can purchase tickets at any of the homes or in advance at Ben Franklin, Willow and Ivy or Montague’s Flower Shop.  The cost is $10 and proceeds support the Crookston Area Habitat for Humanity (CAHFH), which is currently constructing its seventh Habitat house in Crookston.

The first tour stop is Ardell and Sandy Knudsvig’s home at 422 Holly Avenue, where people can see the cute “chicken” kitchen and enjoy the many collectibles on display.  The next stop can be found right across the street, at the lovely home of Don Christie at 501 Holly.  There, tour-takers will enter this century-old home thought a turret entrance.  Next on the list of holiday tour stops is Jo and Jon Bittner’s home at 234 Houston Avenue.  This home, built in the early 1900s, will feature live music on the grand piano, courtesy of Mary Ann Knotek.  Dale and Marlene Johnson’s home at 601 S. Ash, the next tour stop, features a wrap-around porch in addition to a wonderful array of antiques from their family on display in the attic.  The tour ends its Woods Addition swing with a visit to Tim and Kim Persson’s home at 749 Groveland Avenue.  This is a French Provincial house built in 1998 that overlooks the Red Lake River.  Last but not least on the tour is Laurie and Lee Straw’s house at 518 N. Ash Street.  While taking in the holiday decorations in this four-story home, visitors will also enjoy listening to a violinist playing holiday music.

Service Learning Receives Minigrant
UMC’s Office of Service Learning has been selected to receive two Student Groups Civic Engagement Minigrants of $500 each.  The two grants will assist with costs associated with the recent Community Dialogues and VolunTEAM Club programs, such as the upcoming Winter Wonderland, and with the upcoming program “Reach – With James Hersch,” held during Raise Your Voice:  A Week of Action, February 16-22, 2003.

The Minnesota Campus Compact Student Fellows reviewed UMC’s proposals and found that they connected well with “Raise Your Voice: Student Action for Change,” a national student civic engagement campaign coordinated by Campus Compact (see <http://actionforchange.org> for more information).  The Raise Your Voice Campaign has three overarching objectives: 1) to increase college student involvement in public life and connect these actions with a larger national student movement around civic engagement, 2) to document student civic engagement activities and issues that are important to college students, and 3) to mobilize higher education in a way that gives more voice to students and makes civic engagement central to student learning.

Calling All Brainstormers December 12
The UMC Image Marketing Committee (IMC) wants you to brainstorm with other campus representatives for ideas to increase enrollment at UMC.  Bring your lunch to Sahlstrom Conference Center A & B at noon on Thursday, December 12, for an exercise in brainstorming.  This brainstorming session is open to all interested faculty, staff, and students.

UMC Admissions works very hard at recruiting students.  Together, IMC and Admissions are requesting your help in coming up with some ideas and solutions to assist campus recruitment efforts.  We all have a stake in the success of our recruitment efforts, and program areas are dependent upon how well we pursue and excite the prospective student.  Your input can be a key factor in increasing enrollment.
