Major Fair November 13
UMC will host a Major Fair on
Wednesday, November 13, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in Brown Dining Room.
This fair is open to all students on campus with the purpose of
inviting them to learn more about UMC’s various A.A.S. and B.S.
programs.
A special invitation
has been extended to all of UMC’s undecided/undeclared students. This
invitation is special in that it requests their attendance, but also
gives them the opportunity to mingle with UMC‘s experienced and involved
students, faculty, and staff. The objective is to permit these students
to learn more about why students chose what program as well as to allow
undecided and degree seeking students to gather more information about
our fine programs and the opportunities each host after graduation.
Center Offices have the
necessary information. Please see Center Directors Richard Nelson,
Marsha Odom, or Rob Smith for additional information.

Julie
of MTV’s Real World to Speak at UMC

Julie, a
member of the cast of MTV’s The Real World –
New Orleans,
will speak at UMC on Wednesday, November 13. The event will begin at 8
p.m. in the newly renovated Kiehle Auditorium on the UMC Campus.
Admission is free and the event is open to the public.
With a very conservative background, Julie
was brought up to "obey the rules" always, but quickly found out that
she enjoyed breaking them. She has been suspended from Brigham Young
University because of her involvement with the MTV program. She is
currently capitalizing on her newly found stardom through a national
speaking tour of college campuses—a part of the larger “Keeping It Real”
Tour, involving many alumni of the MTV show.
Julie speaks about her behind-the-scenes
experiences on the hit “reality TV” show and shares her positive message
of self-discovery. In addition to this tour, she is a national
spokesperson for abstinence, a member of the "truth" campaign, and
speaker against drug and alcohol abuse.

Campus Signage Update
We wish to thank the UMC staff
and faculty for their input and help with the UMC Interior Campus
Signage Project. We have experienced a few problems with some of the
signs and they are being replaced. The University of Minnesota Sign
Shop staff will be on campus November 19 (in afternoon) and November 20
to complete the repairs on our signs.
--John Zak, University Relations
Message received from Gerald Meissner,
Supervisor, University of Minnesota Signs & Graphics Unit
“As supervisor of the Signs & Graphics
Unit I want to apologize for the difficulties your staff has had with
regard to signs made recently. We value the business that we receive
from the Crookston Campus and, although it sounds like the new room
number signs that have been made are working out well, I acknowledge
the difficulties you have been experiencing, namely with the insert
holders. We have tried to make the appropriate fixes in good faith
but have come up short.
“Partly because of a greater amount of
work than normal and a decreased staff size, your project was delayed,
which I am sorry for and take full responsibility for. We attempted
to make up for this delay by subcontracting some of the sign
components which ended up causing unforeseen difficulties. Many of
the acrylic pieces cut for us were out of square to the point of
needing to be re-cut. To speed up the fabrication we had the cut
material re-cut to what I thought would still be an acceptable size.
As it turns out, this did not work out. Even though the insert
holders we had been checking seemed to be OK, many of the holders
were such that it was still difficult to slide paper into them and a
number of the retrofit corrections that we made (at our cost) have not
been holding up.
“As a result, we are going to replace all
of the defective holders at our cost and will be sending someone up to
your campus in the next couple of weeks to make the necessary holder
changes. We will continue to do what is necessary to make things
right. If anyone has questions they can call our shop at 612-625-9317
or they can e-mail me at
meiss002@umn.edu.”
Respectfully,
Gerald Meissner
Supervisor
University of Minnesota Signs & Graphics Unit

Grades
to be Submitted on the Web in Spring 2003
Beginning in spring 2003,
final grades posted on all University campuses will be submitted on the
Web. Instructors will log onto the Web-based system using their x.500
username and password. The system will automatically display courses for
which he or she is listed in PeopleSoft as the instructor of record. The
instructor will then choose the course for which the grades are being
entered and submit a grade for each student.
Last March the Council
of Undergraduate Deans approved the following policies to govern the Web
grading process:
-
Faculty will be
required to enter a valid grade for every student before posting the
class.
-
The system must allow
"pending" grades to be entered and saved prior to posting.
-
Approvals will not be
required for initial or supplemental grade submissions.
Faculty and departments
will receive more information about submitting grades on the Web later
this fall. E-mail questions to Tina Falkner at
rovic002@umn.edu.

College Bowl Players Needed
Later this month, on Wednesday,
November 20, there will once again be a College Bowl competition here on
campus. I’m writing to faculty and staff in the hopes that you will
maybe encourage those students who you feel would do well in this
Jeopardy-like competition. Topics vary across the spectrum of pop
culture, history, the sciences and arts, etc.
So if you have students
in your classes or know students who exhibit outstanding knowledge in
any area, please encourage them to join a team or form a team to
compete. If you have any questions, feel free to contact myself or Pam
Holsinger-Fuchs, and we’d be glad to answer them. Thank you for your
time.

VolunTEAM Update

This week’s featured Crookston VolunTEAM project is the annual Crookston
Area Habitat for Humanity Holiday Tour of Homes. It takes place on
Sunday, December 8 from 3 to 7 p.m. Julie Follette, Habitat VISTA
Volunteer in Bede 106, says that volunteers are needed in the
pre-selected homes along the Tour route.
If you’re interested in
helping out, or just want to know more about the project, please visit
www.volunteam.org. Julie can be reached at
jfollett@umcrookston.edu or by calling 281-8525.
The VolunTEAM is
Crookston’s new volunteer clearinghouse, headquartered in Bede 106 at
UMC. Local agencies and organizations in need of volunteers to get
project(s) done are encouraged to visit
www.volunteam.org, click
“Register a Project” and describe their need using as much detail as
possible. One simple click later, and the project will be on the site
for potential volunteers to see.
In September, a UMC
chapter of this new, community-wide volunteer clearinghouse, the UMC
VolunTEAM Club, was born. On the evening of Friday, Dec. 6, the
VolunTEAM Club will join 10 other UMC student clubs at the Winter
Wonderland downtown. The clubs’ home base will be at 103 South
Broadway, where much holiday magic will be found.
