News Items

Focus on ADD/ADHD November 6
Disability Services will offer an informal opportunity to learn more about Attention Deficit Disorder and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder on Wednesday, November 6 at noon in Bede Conference Room.  We will show a portion of a video done by several college students with ADD and ADHD, review basic information about the disorder and answer questions about how persons with ADD or ADHD in college can enhance their academic and social experiences.  This session is open to any interested person.  If you are an individual with personal experience with either of these conditions or if you have a family member or a friend, a colleague or an advisee who is affected by ADD or ADHD, you are especially invited to share experiences.
--Laurie Wilson, Counseling and Disability Services

UMC to Host Hunt Seat Equine Competition November 9-10
The Intercollegiate Horse Show Association (IHSA) Riding Team at the University of Minnesota, Crookston (UMC) will serve as the host for a Hunt Seat equitation competition November 9-10.  The two-day event will be held at the University Teaching and Outreach Center (UTOC) Arena, on the north end of the campus.  The competition begins at 1 p.m. Saturday, November 9, and continues at 9 a.m. on Sunday, November 10.  The event is free and open to the public.  Concessions will be available.

Flu Shot Clinic November 14 and 25
There will be two flu shot clinics offered at UMC:

  • Thursday, November 14, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in Sahlstrom Conference Center 131

  • Monday, November 25, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in Sahlstrom Conference Center 131

Polk County Public Health will be on campus providing us with an opportunity to get a flu shot.  This will be FREE for all full time students (this cost is absorbed by Student Health) and also FREE for all University employees (this cost is being covered by the University Benefits Advisory Committee as a part of the UPlan benefits).  Check out the following website from the CDC for more information on flu shots:  <http://www.cdc.gov/ncidod/diseases/flu/fluvirus.htm>

Weather Related Campus Closing Policy
The University of Minnesota, Crookston will remain open unless there is unreasonable risk or danger to a substantial number of students and/or employees due to extremely hazardous driving conditions within close proximity to the campus.

Highways 2 and 75 are the primary roads leading to the campus and are the roads most frequently closed due to weather related causes.  The road closure sign in Crookston for west/north bound traffic is located near Pizza Hut/Northland Inn.  At East Grand Forks the road closure sign for eastbound traffic is located near the Riverbend Supper Club west of the Highway 2 and 220 junction.  Failure to obey these “road closure” signs can result in a substantial fine as well as injury or death.  Area radio and TV stations provide timely information on road conditions and on road closures and should be considered a primary source of information for students, faculty, and staff.

If that portion of Highway 2 & 75 immediately in front (west) of the UMC campus is closed, the campus will be closed and only designated critical employees are to report to work or remain at work, unless specifically informed by their supervisors not to report.

The campus will generally not close for weather related conditions if Highway 2 & 75 is open to traffic (i.e., not officially closed by law enforcement agencies or the Minnesota Department of Transportation).

Reminder on Open Enrollment
Below is a reminder from Employee Benefits to complete your Open Enrollment Application Form and mail it directly to Employee Benefits or turn it in to Jacquie at 121A Selvig Hall before November 15

This year there are new options available for dental insurance.  Therefore, you must submit a new application form that indicates your selection for dental coverage for the year 2003.  Feel free to contact me at 8345 or call Employee Benefits at (800) 756-2363 if you have questions.

Thanks,
--Les Johnson, Director, UMC Human Resources

From: Employee Benefits

Just a reminder - it's Open Enrollment! No, we know you haven't forgotten, because benefit enrollment applications are arriving every day at our office. However, we need to receive a whole lot more of them! As of today, we have processed about 2,500 applications; however, our goal is about 16,500!

We are asking you to please encourage your staff to complete their Application for Coverage as soon as possible. This will not only help our Employee Benefits staff process in a timely manner, but will also ensure that your employees receive their provider cards before the start of the new plan year.

We appreciate your help. If you have any questions, please contact the Employee Benefits Office at 612-624-9090.

Thank You!

VolunTEAM Update
VolunTEAM Logo
This week’s featured Crookston VolunTEAM project is located at the Riverview Healthcare Association Foundation in Crookston. Marlene Almlie, director of the Foundation, describes the project this way at www.volunteam.org: “If learning a computer software program is easy for you, data input services are needed at the Riverview Foundation. I will provide the data and the basics of our fund-raising software program. Together, we will input a database, capital campaign pledges/correspondence and other useful information that will serve the Foundation’s need in the future. Approximately 2-3 hours per week needed, and the hours can be flexible during the 8-5 work/school day.”

Any UMC instructors who have a student that might be a good fit with this project are encouraged to visit www.volunteam.org to find out more about Almlie’s project. She can be reached at 281-9249 or malmlie@riverviewhealth.org.

The VolunTEAM is Crookston’s new volunteer clearinghouse, headquartered in Bede 106 at UMC. Local agencies and organizations in need of volunteers to get project(s) done are encouraged to visit www.volunteam.org, click “Register a Project” and describe their need using as much detail as possible. One simple click later, and the project will be on the site for potential volunteers to see.

In September, a UMC chapter of this new, community-wide volunteer clearinghouse, the UMC VolunTEAM Club, was born. Upcoming projects include helping an elderly woman rake her yard before the snow flies, and assisting a single mother as she moves to a new home.

Interested in learning more about the Crookston VolunTEAM or UMC VolunTEAM Club? Call Mike Christopherson at 281-8526, email him at chris282@umcrookston.edu, or simply visit the website.

UMC Torch & ShieldPIAC, Torch and Shield Thanks
My thanks to everyone for all the work that went into hosting our guests on Wednesday, October 30.  Attendance was excellent as Bede Ballroom was completely full at lunch and Kiehle Auditorium nearly full with the evening program.  The feedback from the PIAC meetings and Torch and Shield program has been great.

I know that nearly everyone on campus had a role in preparing for and conducting the events of day.  The presentations, handouts, meals, buildings and grounds, media support, and the many other necessary activities that were a part of day were exceptionally well done.  It didn't go unnoticed by our guests.  They were pleased with your work and willing to continue to help us strengthen our programs.

Mary Beth and I were surprised and appreciative that the Veden Trust would initiate a scholarship fund in our name.  It was neat to be recognized in this manner with a gift for UMC students.  We thank you for this recognition and for your support.

It was a day for all of us to enjoy.   My thanks to each of you for making it such.
--Don Sargeant, Chancellor
