Chancellor Search Committee
I want to thank members of the Crookston campus who provided feedback to Vice President and Chancellor Search Committee Chair Robert Jones during his visit to the Crookston campus in September.  Your thoughts and feedback about search committee membership, the search process in general, and characteristics needed in the next chancellor were invaluable.  We received an extensive list of nominations for committee members, any of whom would have provided excellent service on the committee.  While making the final determination about search committee membership is always a challenging endeavor, I attempted, with guidance from the campus community, to strike a balance in representation from the various internal and external campus constituencies.  I should note that UMC faculty, staff, and students will also have an opportunity to participate in the search process by meeting with final candidates during on-campus interviews.  In the meantime, should you have feedback regarding the search, please contact Vice President Jones or any of the search committee members.

I am now pleased to announce the membership of the search committee for the University of Minnesota, Crookston chancellor:

  • Robert J. Jones, Vice President and Executive Vice Provost for Faculty and Academic Programs, Search Committee Chair

  • Cameron Brauer, UMC student

  • Ken Broin, Member, UMC All-College Advisory Committee

  • Susan Brorson, Professor, Marketing and Management and Program Manager, Business Management

  • Pam Holsinger-Fuchs, Director, Student Activities and Service Learning

  • Mark Huglen, Assistant Professor, Communication

  • Larry Huus, Associate Professor and Program Manager, Accounting

  • Jean Korkowski, President, Crookston Student Association

  • Soo-Yin Lim-Thompson, Assistant Professor, Early Childhood Education and Management

  • Andy Lopez, Professor of Computer Science, University of Minnesota, Morris

  • Bill Peterson, Professor, Math and Chair, UMC Faculty Assembly

  • Peggy Sherven, IT Professional, Computing Services

  • Larry J. Smith, Associate Professor and Head, Northwest Research and Outreach Center

  • W. Daniel Svedarsky, Professor, Natural Resources and Program Manager, Environmental and Natural Resource Management

  • Calvin L. Walker, Assistant Dean, University of Minnesota Extension Service

  • Pete Wasberg, Chair, Crookston Chamber of Commerce and Division Manager, Ottertail Power Company

This is an outstanding and talented group of individuals who will serve the Crookston campus community and the University of Minnesota well during the search process.  The first search committee meeting will be held within the next couple of weeks and on-campus interviews of candidates will occur in mid-spring.

I look forward to conducting a successful search and to appointing a chancellor who will continue the outstanding legacy left by Chancellor Don Sargeant.
--Robert H. Bruininks, Interim President, University of Minnesota

Jack-o'-lanternUMC Haunted House October 31
UMC Residential Life and the VolunTEAM will sponsor their annual Haunted House for one night only on Thursday, October 31, in Bede Student Center.  There will be two “shifts” geared toward different age groups.  From 5 to 6 p.m. admission will be $2 per person, and the level of scariness will be appropriate for grade school children.   From 7:30 to 10:30 p.m. admission will be $4 per person ($2 for UMC students with UCard), and the level of scariness will move up to a “PG-13” level.  All proceeds raised will go to the Crookston Habitat for Humanity.

Regional Health Sciences Briefing Set for November 22
On Friday, November 22, UMC will host a special briefing for regional professionals and business and civic leaders to assess regional health care workforce issues and needs.  The purpose of this activity, in concert with a feasibility study, is to develop a comprehensive plan for meeting the health care education needs within the area.   Questions to be addressed include:  What is the nature of the problem?   What are the resources available to address the problem?  What is the design to meet those needs?  What roles do the higher education institutions play?

Three major goals of the briefing are:

  1. To explore the extent to which the shortage in health care workers that is occurring nation-wide affects rural Northwest Minnesota.

  2. To provide an opportunity for local and regional health care employers, workers and residents to share their perceptions regarding the nature of the problem and possible means to address it.

  3. To identify creative solutions to meeting the shortages in health care workers.

Please mark this date on your calendar.  More information, including a detailed schedule for the day, will be forthcoming.
--Jennifer Wilson, Director, UMC Health Sciences

News from the UMC Library
The UMC Library has two new rooms for use.  They are located on the second floor of the library.  One room is a technology room, which has new desktop computers and a printer.  The other room is a new study room, which also has Ethernet jacks.  These rooms have a nice view overlooking the mall.   Stop by and take a look.

A reminder: If you want to use the wireless connection in the library, you will need to do a one-time fix to your computer.  Please ask at the Help Desk or front desk at the library if you need help.  It only takes about 10 minutes.
--Owen Williams, Director of Library Services

Bede Info Desk Gets New Volunteer:  “Grandma Edna”
Edna BendicksonEdna Bendickson
is the newest Bede Info Desk Worker.  She is not a typical info desk worker in that she is not a student; she is an 81-year-old volunteer who formerly worked at the local clinic and at Minnesota Job Corp in Crookston.

Pam Holsinger-Fuchs, Director of Student Activities and Service Learning, is excited about the prospects of having a “Campus Grandma.”   She says, “We are trying to be intentional about intergenerational programs like this, and we would like to see if other offices across campus have needs where the Retired Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) volunteers can be involved and visible.”

“Grandma Edna” will work from 10 to 11:20 a.m. on Tuesdays and from 1 to 3 p.m. on Fridays beginning October 25.

VolunTEAM Update
VolunTEAM Logo
This week’s featured Crookston VolunTEAM project is located at the Villa St. Vincent Nursing Home, which is looking for people to help residents get to rehabilitation appointments. Bev Brekken, the Villa’s volunteer director, describes the need this way on www.volunteam.org: Help residents to get to rehab and to help them stay as independent as long as they can- Benefits for you including getting some exercise, making a difference in someone's life, making a new friend and getting snacks. It sounds like a rewarding project for a student or an older member of the community. Brekken can be reached at 281-3424 or babrekken@bhshealth.org.

The VolunTEAM is Crookston’s new volunteer clearinghouse, headquartered in Bede 106 at UMC. Local agencies and organizations in need of volunteers to get project(s) done are encouraged to visit www.volunteam.org, click “Register a Project” and describe their need using as much detail as possible. One simple click later, and the project will be on the site for potential volunteers to see.

In September, a UMC chapter of this new, community-wide volunteer clearinghouse, the UMC VolunTEAM Club, was born. Upcoming projects include helping an elderly woman rake her yard before the snow flies, and assisting a single mother as she moves to a new home.

Interested in learning more about the Crookston VolunTEAM or UMC VolunTEAM Club? Call Mike Christopherson at 281-8526, email him at chris282@umcrookston.edu, or simply visit the website.
