UMC and NCTC to
Sign Articulation Agreement October 24 The agreement will facilitate credit transfer and provide a smooth transition from NCTC’s related Manufacturing A.S. degree and certificate programs to the UMC Bachelor of Manufacturing Management degree program. Current students, graduates, and faculty of NCTC manufacturing programs will be eligible for credit evaluation under the terms of this agreement. UMC’s Bachelor of Manufacturing Management (B.M.M.) program is designed to meet the needs of those already in the workplace and two-year graduates who want to continue their education to Bachelor level. The program of study includes management, technology, and some job-specific courses customized to learner needs. The B.M.M. is the result of considerable discussion with employers and industry professionals. It is designed for working graduates in industrial and business fields who have experience in manufacturing or other business settings. It is specifically tailored to those individuals for whom baccalaureate level management and technology skills will pay dividends in the workplace. The program recognizes the value of previous college coursework, specialized training and life experience, and adds a combination of technological and business skills to prepare graduates for future opportunities. Semester Course
Numbering
At the 10/11/02 meeting of the
Curriculum Committee I was requested to provide information to the
campus community regarding course numbering conventions. The following
information was originally provided to faculty at the time we were
preparing to convert from the quarter calendar to the semester calendar
and was included in the "Semester Transition Course Catalog."
Semester Course Numbering
Semester courses will have four digit numbers. The first number designates the course level.
The numbering system is as follows:
0xxx Courses that do not carry credit toward any University degree.
1xxx Courses primarily for undergraduate students in their first year of study.
2xxx Courses primarily for undergraduate students in their second year of study.
3xxx Courses primarily for undergraduate students in their third year of study.
4xxx Courses primarily for undergraduate students in their fourth year of study.
For additional information regarding Semester Schedule Time Patterns and Rules I have also posted to the web at http://webhome.crk.umn.edu/~nelson/other/ClassNumbers02.htm the information approved by Campus Assembly in 1997. Please note, however, that I have "inserted" the above section into this document in order to have all related information included in one place, even though it was not part of the actual document approved at that time.
Please feel free to
contact me if you have any questions or would like a copy of the Word
document.

Reminder on the Use
of UMC’s Golden Eagle Logo
The
policy on use of the UMC Golden Eagle Logo as established by the UMC
Image and Marketing Committee is as follows:
The UMC Golden Eagle Logo adopted by the Image and Marketing Committee on April 9, 2001, is now the official UMC Golden Eagle Logo to be used as a major mark. The UMC Golden Eagle will be registered as a trademark upon its official adoption.
The use of other Golden Eagle Logo marks are not recommended or approved. Use of other stylized eagle head marks on various applications such as uniforms, clothing, publications, web pages, or display materials will not be paid from University funds.
Applications such as UMC athletic uniforms, etc. that are currently in use will be granted approval for continued use under a grandfather clause permitting usage until new athletic uniforms are purchased.
Also refer to: <www.umcrookston.edu/campusinfo/policies/logo.htm>.
If you are considering
ordering products or items that will include the University of Minnesota
Wordmark, the Crookston "M," or the Golden Eagle Logo, please check with
University Relations to make sure you are using the correct images and
University colors. In developing the Marks of Excellence for the
University, there are several guidelines to follow that pertain to
logos, images and colors as there are with the Golden Eagle. It may
seem like a minor item, but it is all part of building a consistent
image for UMC. Any questions you have may be directed to the University
Relations Office at 281-8436 (Curt Almlie). Thank you for your
cooperation.

U Grants Training Day
November 19
University faculty, staff,
and postdocs involved in grants through research and community service
are invited to a U Grants Training
Day, November 19, 2002, at the Walter Library on the
Minneapolis Campus.

Come to any or all sessions. A small charge and advance sign-up are
needed for the lunch session, at which a
National Science Foundation (NSF)
grants officer will talk about grant-making trends. More information is
available at <www.gen.umn.edu/grants/ugrantsday.htm>.

Bede Info Desk Gets New
Volunteer: “Grandma Edna”
Edna Bendickson is the newest
Bede Info Desk Worker. She is not a typical info desk worker in that
she is not a student; she is an 82-year-old volunteer who formerly
worked at the local clinic and at Minnesota Job Corp in Crookston.
Pam Holsinger-Fuchs, Director of Student Activities and Service Learning, is excited about the prospects of having a “Campus Grandma.” She says, “We are trying to be intentional about intergenerational programs like this, and we would like to see if other offices across campus have needs where the Retired Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) volunteers can be involved and visible.”
“Grandma Edna” will work from 10 to 11:20 a.m. on Tuesdays and from 1 to 3 p.m. on Fridays beginning October 25.

VolunTEAM Update
Crookston’s new volunteer
clearinghouse, the Crookston VolunTEAM, officially launched its website,
www.volunteam.org, earlier this month. VolunTEAM headquarters are
located in Bede 106.
Local agencies and organizations in need of volunteers to get project(s) done are encouraged to visit the site, click “Register Project” and describe their need using as much detail as possible. One simple click later, and the project will be on the site for potential volunteers to see.
Our featured VolunTEAM project this week, located at the Presbyterian Church, might be a nice fit for someone in UMC’s ITM program. The church has a new website but needs someone to lead them through the final steps necessary to officially launch the site. Visit www.volunteam.org to learn more about the project, or call Pastor Daniel Wolpert at 281-4853.
In September, a UMC chapter of this new, community-wide volunteer clearinghouse, the UMC VolunTEAM Club, was born. In barely more than a month the club has made quite an impact, volunteering numerous times at the local Habitat for Humanity house and assembling toys for the school district’s Early Childhood Family Education program. On October 11, the Clovia sorority and student athletes representing the UMC men’s hockey and basketball teams helped the VolunTEAM Club move an elderly woman’s belongings in preparation for an auction. Their efforts were featured on KVLY-TV11 and also in the Crookston Daily Times. This week, the club will help a local elderly woman rake her yard. Meanwhile, club members are preparing to assist Residential Life with their Haunted House on Halloween and the CSA with the downtown Winter Wonderland on December 6.
Interested in learning more about the Crookston VolunTEAM or UMC VolunTEAM Club? Call Mike Christopherson at 281-8526, email him at chris282@umcrookston.edu, or simply visit the website.
Accolades
UMC
Student Amanda Willger has been named a Minnesota Campus Compact
(MCC) Student Fellow for 2002-03. Amanda is a first year business
management and marketing major from Rice Lake, Wisconsin. She is one of
a select group of 20 such fellows selected by MCC from student
applicants across the state. The program is linked to the National
Student Civic Engagement Campaign. Both the Fellows program and the
larger campaign exist to support and promote students as powerful
citizen leaders. Fellows will network with their peers, apply and
further develop their skills, organize civic dialogues to address
critical public issues, and mobilize students in this effort.
Amanda has a number of volunteer experiences on her résumé, including work with the Special Olympics, Adopt a Grandparent, Habitat for Humanity, America Reads, and 4-H Helpers, among others. She credits her fifth grade teacher for sparking an interest in her first service project, an adopt-a-family Christmas shopping program. “I would like to see more involvement in the community and on campus from parents, students, and teachers,” she says. “There are more students who are more than willing to help out in the community in anyway. You feel great when you have helped someone out or do something for the community.”
