Comedian Phil Palisoul Performs October 9
Phil PalisoulComedian Phil Palisoul will perform at UMC Wednesday, October 9.  The performance will begin at 8 p.m. in Bede Ballroom on the UMC Campus.  Admission is free to UMC students and $2 for all others.  The event is open to the public.

Palisoul builds his show from a playful and silly mixture of life experiences.  He touches on childhood memories (growing up in a typical suburban neighborhood, in a typical suburban family) and married life.  His comedy has made him a favorite in television, corporate shows, comedy clubs and colleges across the country.

Family Weekend October 12
We are expecting approximately 100 family members to participate in Family Weekend on Saturday, October 12, including parents, grandparents, and siblings.  Several faculty members have volunteered to host a class demonstration for family members, including:

  • Craig Silvernagel - Advertising Doesn’t Work!

  • Ken Myers - Hospitality Pleasures

  • Wendell Johnson & Nancy Capistran - DNA Fingerprinting

  • Jennifer Ganyo - Poetry Without Pain!

  • Dawn Sherwood - Horse Tidbits

Other faculty and staff have volunteered to serve as hosts for the dinner and entertainment.  Several departments on campus will host a Student Services Reception in the rotunda of Kiehle Building from 4 to 5:30 p.m. to provide information about scholarships, study abroad and more.  A variety of student clubs and organizations will host activities and volunteer to assist with the weekend, including CSA, First Year Honor Society, Horticulture Club, Hospitality Association, Music and Theater, and more.  Thank you in advance to the faculty, staff and students who are participating in events over the weekend!

I would encourage any faculty or staff to attend activities throughout the weekend.  Family members really appreciate the opportunity to interact with our faculty and staff as much as possible.  If you are not able to attend activities during the day, please join us in the Northshore Room at the Northland Inn from 8 to 11 p.m. to enjoy music and refreshments.

A complete Family Weekend schedule is available at http://www.umcrookston.edu/FYE/Parent_Programs/FamWk02.pdf.  If you have questions or comments, please contact me at ext. 8339 or via e-mail.

Fall Convocation Set for October 16
UMC will hold its Fall Convocation on Wednesday, October 16, at 10 a.m., in the newly renovated Kiehle Auditorium (Bede Ballroom is set as the alternate meeting place in case of occupancy delay).

Special guest speaker will be David Badman, owner of Badman Design in Grand Forks, ND.  He will speak about owning and operating his own design business (refer to http://badman.com).  He will also formally present the new academic torch, which he designed and created, to the campus community.  Following Mr. Badman’s address, academic achievement will be recognized, and the captains of fall athletic teams will report on their respective seasons so far.

Men’s Golf Team Takes NSIC Title
2002 UMC Men's Golf Team
The University of Minnesota, Crookston won its first-ever NSIC title, capturing the 2002 NSIC Men’s Golf Championship at Pebble Creek Golf Club in Becker, MN, this past weekend.  With two of the top three performers, including individual champion – Branden Schwartz, and third place performer - Nate Dahl, the Golden Eagles compiled a two-day team score of 459. Due to weather conditions, the first day consisted of nine holes. However, the second day of competition allowed each team to complete 18 holes for a total of 27 for the tournament. After day one, UMC led by two strokes over Winona State, 151 to 153. On day two, the Golden Eagles again shot a tournament-best with a score of 308.

After his first place finish, Branden Schwartz (Fr. - Brooklyn Park, MN) was selected as the 2002 NSIC Men’s Golfer of the Year, becoming the first-ever golfer from UMC to accomplish the feat. Schwartz’s head coach, Jason Tanquist, received the 2002 Men’s Golf Coach of the Year award for leading the Golden Eagles to the school’s first-ever NSIC team title in any sport. UMC became a full-fledged member of the NSIC in 1999.

UMC to Host Equestrian Competition October 12-13
The Intercollegiate Horse Show Association (IHSA) Riding Team at the University of Minnesota, Crookston will serve as the host for a Western riding competition October 12-13.  The two-day event will be held at the University Teaching and Outreach Center (UTOC) Arena, on the north end of the campus.  The competition begins at 1 p.m. Saturday, October 12, and continues at 9 a.m. on Sunday, October 13.  The event is free and open to the public.

Equestrian teams from Saint Cloud State University, University of Wisconsin--River Falls, University of Wisconsin--Madison, South Dakota State University, and University of Nebraska--Lincoln will compete with UMC’s team in the area of Western equitation.  These teams comprise Zone 6, Region 4 of the IHSA.

UMC has been a member of the IHSA Zone 6, Region 4, since 1996, and it is known as the “President College” or hub of that region.  UMC’s riding teams have been strong competitors at the zone level and have sent several members on to national competition over the past six years.  IHSA competition provides supplemental riding opportunities for students enrolled in UMC’s Equine Industries Management degree program.  UMC is one of the few schools in the nation to provide such a specialized equine science program.

For more information contact Dawn Sherwood, Assistant Professor of Equine Science, at 218-281-8127, or refer to the UMC IHSA Team web page at http://webhome.crk.umn.edu/clubs/IHSAteam/.

Disability accommodations are available upon request and can be made by calling 218-281-8587.

Two New Aviation Emphases
UMC now offers two new areas of emphasis for undergraduate students interested in aviation and natural resources:  Natural Resources Aviation and Law Enforcement Aviation.  The required personnel, equipment, and curriculum, with the exception of one new course, are already in place.  Implementation of these new programs primarily involves repackaging of existing programmatic strengths to serve new learner markets and industries.  Academic content will be provided by UMC and through its current partnerships with the University of North Dakota (aviation) and Bemidji State University (law enforcement).  One new course, “Natural Resources Aviation Applications,” will be developed in collaboration with the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources and the Minnesota State Patrol.

UMC Teams Place at Dairy Expo
Twelve UMC students traveled to Madison, WI, to attend the World Dairy Expo, October 2-6.  UMC fielded two judging teams--practical and traditional. UMC's practical team placed third overall and third in linear judging.  The traditional team took second place in Guernseys and tenth place overall.

Practical team members were (left to right) Jennifer Goeller, Dustin Hollerman, Ellen Larson, and Mike Hendrickx.

Seeking Applications for Board of Regents
The Regent Candidate Advisory Council was established by an act of the Legislature of the State of Minnesota in 1988 (Minnesota Statute 137.0245) to advise the legislature in the election of regents of the University of Minnesota.  Its duties are to develop a description of the duties of regents, outline criteria to be applied in recommending candidates, and recruit, screen and recommend at least two, and not more than four, qualified candidates to the legislature for each opening on the University of Minnesota Board of Regents.

The twelve-member Board of Regents is the governing body of the University of Minnesota.  The legislature elects one regent from each of Minnesota's eight congressional districts and four from the state at large.  One of the four at-large regents must be a University student at the time of election. Regents serve without pay for six-year terms.  Terms are staggered, with one-third of the board up for election every two years.  Five board terms expired in 2001, including three at-large positions (two regular six-year terms, and one stub term that expires 2005), one position in the fifth congressional district, and one student position.

The application deadline for those open positions was December 1, 2000.  The council received 134 applications before the deadline and recommended 13 candidates to the legislature.  The legislature did not meet in Joint Convention to elect members to the Board of Regents before it adjourned on May 21, 2001.  The University Charter gives the governor authority to make interim appointments, and it states that the individuals appointed shall continue in office until the close of the session of the legislature, then next thereafter, and until others are elected in their stead. On July 31, 2001, Governor Jesse Ventura appointed five individuals to the Board of Regents:  Frank Berman, Jean Keffeler, Richard McNamara, Michael O’Keefe, and Lakeesha Ransom.  The legislature has not since met in Joint Convention to elect regents.

The next regular vacancies on the Board of Regents will occur in 2003. These positions include one each in the first, fourth, sixth and seventh congressional districts.

The council has begun recruiting applicants for these positions.  Application packets are available on the Web at <www.commissions.leg.state.mn.us/rcac/rcacpacket.htm> or by calling the RCAC office at (651) 296-9002.  The application deadline has been set for December 2, 2002.  Interviews will be held the week of January 27, 2003.

Facilities Management Update
As of next Thursday, October 10, the SURE (Scheduling University Resources Electronically) system will be operational.  Rooms and vehicles will need to be scheduled on-line at the Facilities Management web site <www.umcrookston.edu/facilities/sure>.  You might want to save this link for future reference.

When scheduling rooms you will have the opportunity to acquire additional services such as refreshments from Dining Services, equipment from Media Resources, conferencing or special set-ups from Facilities Management.

Several things will change regarding University vehicle usage.  University vehicles will be scheduled on-line by using one of two categories.  The cars and mini-vans are in one group and the 15 passenger vans are in another group.  University of Minnesota policy requires that drivers of 15 passenger vans must have documented training before driving.  Training sessions have been offered and they have been completed for the year.  Plans call for additional training sessions to be offered only each fall semester.

In order to enforce the new 15 passenger van policy and to provide additional security, starting October 10, 2002 the keys will no longer be left in any of the vehicles, and the garage locks will be changed.  Keys must be picked up from Facilities Management prior to your departure and returned to a drop box (by the south Kiser walk door) when you return.  This will require substantial prior planning, as keys will not be available on weekends or after office hours.  To help alleviate potential problems, multiple sets of keys are available for each vehicle, but again prior planning will be required to avoid possible frustration.

Instructions for how to make a reservation of either a room or vehicle are provided on-line at the same site.  A training session is scheduled for Tuesday, October 15, in Hill 4 at 2 p.m. for those interested in learning more about this new scheduling system.

Kiehle
The Kiehle project is winding down.  Moving is scheduled to take place beginning on October 7.  Except for a few late arriving pieces of materials and/or equipment, the project should be complete by the end of the month.

Early Childhood Development Center
Have you seen the new playground equipment that has been installed in the playground area?  It looks great and should be a great asset to the program.

Mall
The concrete work, except for some staining, has been completed by the gazebo.  Rocks, trees, shrubs, and a little more sod are next on the agenda for this fall.

Roof Repair
The Library roof repair is nearing completion.  The roofers will then attempt to repair the other roof leaks we have on campus.

Fee Changes and Airline Policy Changes

  1. Agencies Airfare Service Fees Increase

When booking air fares with the University’s contract travel agencies be aware that service fees have recently changed for three of the agencies as follows:

University Travel

$18.00 per ticket

AAA Minnesota/Iowa Travel

$32.00 per ticket

Carlson Wagonlit Travel

$42.50 per ticket

Corporate Travel’s fees remain the same at $20 per ticket.

For travel agency contact information see Web Site http://uwidecontracts.umn.edu

The current agencies’ contracts expire on 12/31/02.  Purchasing Services is seeking competitive proposals to establish new travel agency contracts for 2003.

  1. Major Airline Policy Changes on Non-Refundable and Paper Tickets

The top six U.S. airlines have modified their policies on non-refundable domestic and international tickets and paper tickets.  The airlines include: American Airlines, Continental Airlines, Delta Airlines, Northwest Airlines, United Airlines, and US Airways.  A foreign carrier, Air Canada, has also changed its policy.

Paper Tickets:
All major carriers will now charge a  $20 - $25 paper ticket fee for all paper tickets issued when an electronic ticket is available, whether the ticket is issued by a travel agency or directly by the airline.  The exception is US Airways, who will only charge the paper ticket fee when the ticket is issued by US Airways, not an agency.  Additionally American Airlines plans to eliminate paper tickets entirely by the end of 2003. Other airlines may follow suit.

Non-Refundable Tickets:
The general guidelines below outline the changes to non-refundable ticket policies.  Non-refundable tickets will no longer have value after the departure date and cannot be exchanged for future travel, eliminating the previous one-year grace period. This change is effective for the six airlines October 1, 2002.

Changes and cancellations to non-refundable tickets can be made prior to departure, but the traveler will have to pay the applicable change and/or cancellation fee and any difference in fare. Fees for these changes will generally remain the same (approximately $100); however, Northwest has increased its change and cancellation fees from $150 to $200 for non-refundable/penalty fares from the United States to Europe.

Travelers holding non-refundable tickets may stand-by for an alternate flight on the same day of the original ticket but will have to pay a $100 fee to do so ($50 on Delta) with the exception of Northwest and Northwest Airlink where no fee will be applied.
