Palisoul Performs October 9 Palisoul builds his show from a playful and silly mixture of life experiences. He touches on childhood memories (growing up in a typical suburban neighborhood, in a typical suburban family) and married life. His comedy has made him a favorite in television, corporate shows, comedy clubs and colleges across the country. Family Weekend October 12
Other faculty and staff have volunteered to serve as hosts for the dinner and entertainment. Several departments on campus will host a Student Services Reception in the rotunda of Kiehle Building from 4 to 5:30 p.m. to provide information about scholarships, study abroad and more. A variety of student clubs and organizations will host activities and volunteer to assist with the weekend, including CSA, First Year Honor Society, Horticulture Club, Hospitality Association, Music and Theater, and more. Thank you in advance to the faculty, staff and students who are participating in events over the weekend! I would encourage any faculty or staff to attend activities throughout the weekend. Family members really appreciate the opportunity to interact with our faculty and staff as much as possible. If you are not able to attend activities during the day, please join us in the Northshore Room at the Northland Inn from 8 to 11 p.m. to enjoy music and refreshments. A complete Family

Golf Team Takes NSIC Title After his first place finish, Branden Schwartz (Fr. - Brooklyn Park, MN) was selected as the 2002 NSIC Men’s Golfer of the Year, becoming the first-ever golfer from UMC to accomplish the feat. Schwartz’s head coach, Jason Tanquist, received the 2002 Men’s Golf Coach of the Year award for leading the Golden Eagles to the school’s first-ever NSIC team title in any sport. UMC became a full-fledged member of the NSIC in 1999. 2002 NSIC Men’s

Equestrian Competition October 12-13 Equestrian teams from Saint Cloud State University, University of Wisconsin--River Falls, University of Wisconsin--Madison, South Dakota State University, and University of Nebraska--Lincoln will compete with UMC’s team in the area of Western equitation. These teams comprise Zone 6, Region 4 of the IHSA.
UMC has been a member of the IHSA Zone 6, Region 4, since 1996, and it is known as the “President College” or hub of that region. UMC’s riding teams have been strong competitors at the zone level and have sent several members on to national competition over the past six years. IHSA competition provides supplemental riding opportunities for students enrolled in UMC’s Equine Industries Management degree program. UMC is one of the few schools in the nation to provide such a specialized equine science program.
For more information contact Dawn Sherwood, Assistant Professor of Equine Science, at 218-281-8127, or refer to the UMC IHSA Team web page at http://webhome.crk.umn.edu/clubs/IHSAteam/. Disability accommodations are available upon request and can be made by calling 218-281-8587. Two New Aviation

Seeking
Applications for Board of Regents The twelve-member Board of Regents is the governing body of the University of Minnesota. The legislature elects one regent from each of Minnesota's eight congressional districts and four from the state at large. One of the four at-large regents must be a University student at the time of election. Regents serve without pay for six-year terms. Terms are staggered, with one-third of the board up for election every two years. Five board terms expired in 2001, including three at-large positions (two regular six-year terms, and one stub term that expires 2005), one position in the fifth congressional district, and one student position. The application deadline for those open positions was December 1, 2000. The council received 134 applications before the deadline and recommended 13 candidates to the legislature. The legislature did not meet in Joint Convention to elect members to the Board of Regents before it adjourned on May 21, 2001. The University Charter gives the governor authority to make interim appointments, and it states that the individuals appointed shall continue in office until the close of the session of the legislature, then next thereafter, and until others are elected in their stead. On July 31, 2001, Governor Jesse Ventura appointed five individuals to the Board of Regents: Frank Berman, Jean Keffeler, Richard McNamara, Michael O’Keefe, and Lakeesha Ransom. The legislature has not since met in Joint Convention to elect regents. The next regular vacancies on the Board of Regents will occur in 2003. These positions include one each in the first, fourth, sixth and seventh congressional districts. The council has begun recruiting applicants for these positions. Application packets are available on the Web at <www.commissions.leg.state.mn.us/rcac/rcacpacket.htm> or by calling the RCAC office at (651) 296-9002. The application deadline has been set for December 2, 2002. Interviews will be held the week of January 27, 2003. Facilities Management
Update When scheduling rooms you will have the opportunity to acquire additional services such as refreshments from Dining Services, equipment from Media Resources, conferencing or special set-ups from Facilities Management. Several things will change regarding University vehicle usage. University vehicles will be scheduled on-line by using one of two categories. The cars and mini-vans are in one group and the 15 passenger vans are in another group. University of Minnesota policy requires that drivers of 15 passenger vans must have documented training before driving. Training sessions have been offered and they have been completed for the year. Plans call for additional training sessions to be offered only each fall semester. In order to enforce the new 15 passenger van policy and to provide additional security, starting October 10, 2002 the keys will no longer be left in any of the vehicles, and the garage locks will be changed. Keys must be picked up from Facilities Management prior to your departure and returned to a drop box (by the south Kiser walk door) when you return. This will require substantial prior planning, as keys will not be available on weekends or after office hours. To help alleviate potential problems, multiple sets of keys are available for each vehicle, but again prior planning will be required to avoid possible frustration. Instructions for how to make a reservation of either a room or vehicle are provided on-line at the same site. A training session is scheduled for Tuesday, October 15, in Hill 4 at 2 p.m. for those interested in learning more about this new scheduling system. Kiehle Early Childhood
Development Center Mall Roof Repair Fee Changes and Airline Policy Changes
When booking air fares with the University’s contract travel agencies be aware that service fees have recently changed for three of the agencies as follows:
Corporate Travel’s fees remain the same at $20 per ticket. For travel agency contact information see Web Site http://uwidecontracts.umn.edu The current agencies’ contracts expire on 12/31/02. Purchasing Services is seeking competitive proposals to establish new travel agency contracts for 2003.
The top six U.S. airlines have modified their policies on non-refundable domestic and international tickets and paper tickets. The airlines include: American Airlines, Continental Airlines, Delta Airlines, Northwest Airlines, United Airlines, and US Airways. A foreign carrier, Air Canada, has also changed its policy. Paper Tickets: Non-Refundable
Tickets: Changes and cancellations to non-refundable tickets can be made prior to departure, but the traveler will have to pay the applicable change and/or cancellation fee and any difference in fare. Fees for these changes will generally remain the same (approximately $100); however, Northwest has increased its change and cancellation fees from $150 to $200 for non-refundable/penalty fares from the United States to Europe. Travelers holding non-refundable tickets may stand-by for an alternate flight on the same day of the original ticket but will have to pay a $100 fee to do so ($50 on Delta) with the exception of Northwest and Northwest Airlink where no fee will be applied.
Seeking Feedback on UPlan Health Plans For Fall 2002 the University Benefits Advisory Committee (BAC) is conducting reviews of the UPlan health plans. We are seeking comments about your experiences, positive or negative, with your health plan. Your comments will be discussed with the plan administrators and presented at BAC meetings over the next few weeks. I strongly encourage all of you who are on the Preferred One plan to e-mail me your comments (good and bad) by October 10, 2002, because the BAC will be meeting with Preferred One representatives in mid-October. My e-mail is pehng@mrs.umn.edu and my phone number is 320-589-6318. For those on Definity Plans, please send your comments to Dick McGehee at mcgehee@umn.edu, 612-624-9040.
