Undergraduate
Research Opportunities Program
Application material for
Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program projects to be conducted
from January 1 through June 15 is now available in the Academic Affairs
Office. The maximum award is $1,700 – stipend up to $1,400 (hourly rate
is $10.84) and expense allowance up to $300. Completed applications
should be returned to the Academic Affairs Office by 4:30 p.m. on
October 7, 2002. Late applications will not be accepted. UROP offers
financial awards to undergraduate students for research, scholarly, or
creative projects undertaken in partnership with a faculty member. UROP
affords undergraduates the unique educational experience of
collaborating with a faculty member on the design and implementation of
a project. At the same time, faculty have the opportunity to work
closely with students and receive valuable assistance with their own
research or professional activity. UROP encourages students to conduct
research and pursue academic interests outside of their regular courses
by employing them to work on special projects. UROP applications are
judged on the quality of the proposed project and the educational
benefit to the student. Copies of UROP proposals submitted by UMC
students that have been funded are on reserve in the library.

DARwin is coming in mid-October
DARwin—the new system for processing
transfer students and creating degree audit reports—is on schedule for
implementation in October.
The UM Twin Cities Office of
the Registrar and the Office of Admissions are now in the process of
converting mainframe data to DARwin from the existing Degree Audit
Reporting system/Academic Progress Audit system (DARS/APAS).
DARwin is the
client-server version of the mainframe-based DARS. It is coming online
because the University's mainframe computer eventually will be
eliminated.
The change to DARwin
will mean several new things for students and staff.
-
In October, staff who
now process APAS report exceptions will do it through a Web
application. The exception panels will be similar to the
mainframe screens they currently use. APAS reports will also be
viewed, and printed copies available, from a Web panel. This
will mean logging on to one application to all processing for APAS
reports. Training for the new application will be held in early
October.
-
Students will be able
to run their own audit reports from a Web application. They will
also be able to search for degree programs--or "major shop"--on all U
of M campuses.
-
Advisers of record as
well as staff who currently ahve access to run APAS reports will be
able to run reports for their advisees.
More information and
training sessions will be available in the coming months.
The project team is
made up of staff from the Office Admissions, the Office of the
Registrar, Applications Development and Maintenance, Central Computing
Operations, and Web Development.

UMC Student Loan
Default Rates
The US Department of
Education recently released default rates for student loans. The
University of Minnesota, Crookston rate for FY 2000 was 2.6%. This
compares to a national rate of 5.6% and a Minnesota state rate of 3.6%.
The national student loan default rate reached a high of 22.4 percent in
FY 1990 and declined steadily to the FY 1999 low of 5.6 percent. Schools
with excessive default rates of 25 percent or greater for three
consecutive years, or greater than 40 percent for one year, face loss of
eligibility to participate in the loan and/or Pell Grant programs.
UMC's rates for the
past three years are: 1998 (5.3% ), 1999 (5.7%), and 2000 (2.6%).
Cohort default rate is
defined by statute as the percentage of borrowers who enter repayment in
a certain fiscal year and default before the end of the next fiscal
year. The new national default rate is for FY 2000—the most current data
available—and represents the cohort of borrowers whose first loan
repayments came due on or after October 1, 1999, the beginning of FY
2000, and who defaulted before September 30, 2001. A default is defined
as 270 days without a payment.
The national rate
reflects loans made to borrowers who attended some 6,400 individual
schools that participated in the Family Federal Education Loan Program (FFEL)
and the William D. Ford Federal Direct Loan Program.
Congratulations to
UMC's Office of Student Financial Aid for their efforts in improving
UMC's default rate.
