The Seal of the Minnesota Board of RegentsUMC to Host U of M Board of Regents September 12-13
UMC will serve as the host site for the September meeting of the University of Minnesota Board of Regents.   The Regents will hold full board meetings on September 12 and 13.  The Regents will also visit with various UMC committees, faculty, staff, and students during their stay in Crookston.  For more information, including an agenda go to:  <www1.umn.edu/regents>.

The 12-member Board of Regents is the governing body of the University of Minnesota.  The legislature elects one regent from each of Minnesota's eight congressional districts and four from the state at large.  One of the four at-large regents must be a University student at the time of election.  Regents serve without pay for six-year terms.  The president of the University is ex officio president of the Board. The Board meets monthly (except for January and August) on the second Friday and the preceding Thursday.

Great Conversations LogoGreat Conversations
Series Continues
The Concerts and Lectures Committee will again sponsor the Great Conversations series on the UMC Campus.  All conversations are held at 7:30 p.m. in the beautiful Ted Mann Concert Hall overlooking the Mississippi River on the Twin Cities Campus.  They are also telecast live to University of Minnesota coordinate campuses in Crookston, Duluth, Morris, and Rochester.  Great Conversations is produced by the College of Continuing Education.

At UMC the conversations will be shown in Dowell Hall Room 220, and they are free and open to all students, faculty, staff, and the general public.

The fall series includes:

Tuesday, September 24:  “The War with Germs"  Dr. Michael T. Osterholm and Judith Miller

Dr. Michael Osterholm, director of the U's Center for Infectious Disease Research and Policy, is the former Minnesota State Epidemiologist and the nation's leading expert on the potential risk of man-made epidemics.  Following the attacks of September 11, he was appointed to a national advisory board on bioterrorism.  He will be joined by Judith Miller, investigative reporter for The New York Times and expert on Middle Eastern affairs.  She is the author of Germs: Biological Weapons and America's Secret War and was part of the team that contributed to The Times Pulitzer Prize-winning coverage of Osama bin Laden following the attacks of September 11.

Tuesday, October 22:  “The Future of Music Education"  Margo Garrett and Joseph W. Polisi

Grammy Award-winning pianist and U professor Margo Garrett will discuss the future of music education with Joseph W. Polisi, president of The Juilliard School.  Under Dr. Polisi's leadership, Juilliard was awarded the National Medal of Arts from President Clinton in recognition of its pre-eminence in arts education.  Formerly the Head of Juilliard's Collaborative Piano Program, Margo Garrett is currently the first holder of the U's Ethel Alice Hitchcock Chair in Accompanying and Coaching.  This event is offered in conjunction with the 100th anniversary of the U's acclaimed School of Music.

Tuesday, November 19:  "The Art of Remembering"  Patricia Hampl & Eva Hoffman

U Regents' Professor and award-winning author Patricia Hampl will join author Eva Hoffman for insights into the creative writing process.  Hampl is considered to have pioneered the memoir genre with her groundbreaking A Romantic Education in 1981.  Her honors also include a MacArthur Foundation Fellowship or so-called "genius grant."  A former editor for The New York Times Book Review, Hoffman is the author of three acclaimed works of nonfiction including the widely read memoir Lost in Translation.  She currently lives in London and has published her first novel.  This event is sponsored in part by the U's Office of International Programs in celebration of International Education Week.

Support for the series is provided by the University of Minnesota Foundation, in recognition of the generosity of Presidents Club members.  The conversations will also continue in the spring on February 25, March 17, and April 22, 2003.

UROP LogoUndergraduate Research Opportunities Program
Application material for Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program projects to be conducted from January 1 through June 15 is now available in the Academic Affairs Office.  The maximum award is $1,700 – stipend up to $1,400 (hourly rate is $10.84) and expense allowance up to $300.  Completed applications should be returned to the Academic Affairs Office by 4:30 p.m. on October 7, 2002.  Late applications will not be accepted.  UROP offers financial awards to undergraduate students for research, scholarly, or creative projects undertaken in partnership with a faculty member.  UROP affords undergraduates the unique educational experience of collaborating with a faculty member on the design and implementation of a project.  At the same time, faculty have the opportunity to work closely with students and receive valuable assistance with their own research or professional activity.  UROP encourages students to conduct research and pursue academic interests outside of their regular courses by employing them to work on special projects.  UROP applications are judged on the quality of the proposed project and the educational benefit to the student.  Copies of UROP proposals submitted by UMC students that have been funded are on reserve in the library.

UMC To Co-Host Fire Training
UMC will be hosting up to 150 firefighters from Northwest Minnesota and as far away as Winona this weekend, September 14 and 15.  Northland Community and Technical College, Thief River Falls provides fire training for fire departments through their Custom Training Program.  In conjunction with the Red Lake Falls and Crookston Fire Departments, a unique opportunity arose to train in a 12-plex apartment building before it was demolished.

Firefighters will be on campus Saturday morning to study fire tactics in a variety of classes such as Advanced Pump Operations, Rapid Intervention Teams, Multi-story Tactics, Scene Safety Officer, Thermal Imaging Cameras, Propane Fires, Search and Rescue, and Fire Attack.  In the afternoon, most will travel to Red Lake Falls to train in the apartment by setting fires in the building and learning techniques to extinguish, ventilate, rescue and scene safety for firefighters.

On Sunday, all will return to Red Lake Falls and the training will culminate with all classes involved with burning the apartment down and provide structure protection for neighboring buildings.

This is the most realistic training a firefighter can receive and UMC is grateful to be a part of this training opportunity.

First Year Experience LogoFamily Weekend
UMC will host Family Weekend on Saturday, October 12.  A variety of programs and activities are currently being planned, including class demonstrations, a football game, dinner and entertainment, and a reception at the Northland Inn.  All faculty, staff, and students are invited to attend Family Weekend.  Watch for more information about Family Weekend in the next few weeks.

Use of the Crookston Community Pool
Each year UMC has signed a contract to use the Crookston Community Pool.  The contract has been for general student use as well as for certain UMC classes.  The student activity fee has covered a portion of the contract cost, and this provides all UMC students with free access to the pool.

This year the contract will again provide for free access to all faculty and staff as well as students.  We must show our University ID card in order to use the pool under this agreement.

Here is the web link to the pool:  <crookston.net/pool/index.htm>.

Faculty, staff and students can use the pool at no cost for the following sessions:

  • Morning lap swim

  • Morning aqua exercises (does not cover evening class)

  • All open swim times

Crookston has an excellent pool facility, and I encourage you to use it.  Let me know if you have questions.

New 15 Passenger Van Policy
Due to an increase in the number of accidents involving 15 passenger vans, both nationally and within Minnesota, the University of Minnesota has issued a new policy regarding the operation of vans for University activities.  As of November 1, 2002, all drivers of 15 passenger vans are required to complete a certified drivers training course before they will be allowed to operate these vans.  The attached policy applies to vehicles owned by the University or rented from an outside source.  There are no exceptions to this policy.  All drivers after October 31, 2002 will have to be certified.

Carefully read the attached policy.  All supervisors, employees, and students who have driven or have the potential need to drive a 15 passenger van for a field trip, athletic event, student activities event, service learning, academic competition, etc. must complete this training.

In order to meet the requirements of this policy, Mr. Bill Roberts, Director of University Fleet Services for the University of Minnesota, will be on campus September 19 and 20, and again on October 7 to provide training sessions for employees and students.  Mr. Roberts has asked for the following times to be set aside on campus for drivers training.

Thanks from Warroad and Marvin Windows
“I was so touched by the generous donations of the UMC faculty and staff to our flood recovery efforts.  I have written each individual donor and wanted also to thank the entire faculty and staff for the contribution from UMC.  The donations from UMC are so special because I know that many of your faculty and staff have had very personal experiences with flooding; they know how long it will take for us to recover.

"Our fundraising efforts surpassed our wildest dreams and the employees of Marvin Windows and Doors were able to raise over thirty thousand dollars in a six week period of time.  The Marvin family had told us that if we raised $25 thousand, they would match that; so now we have over fifty thousand to contribute to the communities of Baudette, Warroad, and Roseau.

"Our partnership with UMC is very special, and it has become more than just a business relationship.  Together we are changing people’s lives through education, and I can honestly say that working with my colleagues at the University of Minnesota, Crookston has been the highlight of my career.

"As we begin another school year, please know that Marvin Windows and Doors is very proud to be affiliated with you, and we look forward to many more years of working together.”
