Dean McCleary to Leave
Dean McClearyIt is with regret that I announce that Dean McCleary is leaving UMC at the end of September.  He has decided to accept the Chief Financial Officer position with American Federal Bank in Fargo.  Dean is returning to a career in finance and banking.  He had worked in that industry for 14 years before becoming UMC’s Vice Chancellor for Finance in 1994.  Dean has served UMC with distinction.  I know that all students, faculty, and staff alike will miss his smile, friendship, personal support, and great work.  He has truly been an outstanding member of UMC’s administrative team and the UMC community.   We wish Dean, Natalie and their family the best.

Tickets to UMC-UND Game
I have received 200 tickets (from the UND ticket Office) for the UMC-UND Football game on Thursday, August 29, at 7 p.m.  This game will be held at the Alerus Center in Grand forks.

If you are interested in purchasing tickets for this game, you may stop and see Lon Boike, Athletic Director or Stephanie Helgeson, Assistant Athletic Director in the Sports Center.

The cost of the tickets are as follows: (correct change would be appreciated) $15.50 per adult; $9.50 per student (age 2 through college age). UMC students must show a UMC ID to get the student rate.

There is no discount buying your tickets early.  However, we do not know if the Alerus will sell out for this game.  If you choose to purchase your tickets at the Alerus the day of the game, tell them you would like to sit in the UMC section. We appreciate your support!
--Lon Boike, Athletic Director

Thank You, and Have a Great Year!
We hope everyone has received a treat from the baskets the Development staff delivered Monday morning.  We wanted to start everyone’s year on a “sweet” note. Our sincere thanks to those of you that have contributed to the Faculty/Staff fund drive.

If you have not turned in your forms, it is not too late!  Please call Ardis at 281-8437 if you need a new form, if you need a new payroll deduction form, or if you have any questions.   We have had a great response this year from our faculty and staff during the fund drive, but we still have not reached our participation goal.  Remember, we hope to have the highest participation level in the U of M system.  This drive goes to support scholarships, programs and projects, and to recognize faculty and staff achievements.

Also, Teambackers will be getting in touch with everyone soon to join Teambackers.   Teambackers support provides athletic scholarships and is another way you can participate.  If you have any questions about Teambackers, you may contact Scott Oliver at 8421or Lon Boike at 8415.

Thanks again for your support, and have a great year!

Academic Integrity Statement
Some of you have asked about the Academic Integrity Statement adopted by the campus to include in your syllabi, so here it is:

About academic integrity -
The academic reputation of a college or university is at the heart of who we are.  As such, the ethical conduct of its faculty, staff, and students is its most prized possession.  As a valued member of the University community of scholars, your academic integrity is vital to the University’s academic reputation.

Academic performance at the University is more than grades.  It is about how students earned those grades.  The choices students make about their academic responsibilities usually reflect their personal values.  The University advances the following five values*:  Fairness, Honesty, Respect, Responsibility, and Trust.

*”The Fundamental Values of Academic Integrity.”  Center for Academic Integrity, 1999.  www.academicintegrity.org/Values.asp (18 April, 2000)
--Doug Knowlton, Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs

Instructional Technology Center LogoNew Learning Interactives
The ITC has created two Flash games to help new and returning students to become acquainted with our university:

  1. "History of U of M" is a Flash Millionaire game

  2. "U of M Jeopardy" is a Flash Jeopardy game containing questions on 5 categories (UMC, UMM, UMD, UMTC and U of M System)

They are now posted at ITC website: http://webhome.crk.umn.edu/~dlim/itc/ (Click "Flash Games").  Feel free to help us test the games for typos and errors.  I would like to notify all students about the games next week.

If you like to create learning games for your courses using the Millionaire, Jeopardy, Clue, and Action formats, please let me know.
--Dan Lim, Director, Instructional Technology Center
