Meet Crookston through Service
I am still looking for faculty or staff that might want to go out in the community with our “Meet Crookston through Service” program this Saturday, August 24.  You will need to meet at the Brown Dining room by 9 a.m.  We can send you a list of the projects to choose which one you might want to volunteer with. This is a great opportunity to get to know some of our new students and make a difference in the community.  Any participants will also be invited to attend the “Meet Crookston through Dinner” meal on Sunday evening as our guest.  Please email me if you are interested in being involved this Saturday!

Facilities Management Update
There have been lots of questions since people have starting returning to campus.  As you can see as you look at the Mall, the next phase in developing the Centennial Park has begun.  We are currently installing a concrete patio in front of the Gazebo.  We have already added a sidewalk from Selvig Hall to the Conference Center and a base for a future sundial.  Please use caution while driving or walking in these areas.  Depending on weather conditions, we are hoping that this phase will be completed in October.

The Kiehle Building construction project is progressing.  They are currently working on finishing the offices for occupancy in the next few weeks.  The rotunda and auditorium are being painted and are farther back on the schedule.  The project should be substantially completed sometime in late September with final completion by Thanksgiving.

I would like to announce that you can now request a Work Order online by clicking on “Forms” on the Facilities Management web site.  Work Orders can be used to request services form our department.  If you see something that needs attention, please submit a Work Order.  When you submit the Work Order, we will receive it and process the request in a timelier manner, providing better service to the campus.

Finally, in a few weeks we will be introducing S.U.R.E. (Scheduling University Resources Electronically).  It will be used for scheduling vehicles, meeting rooms, and other areas--all online.  This online scheduling service is long overdue for our campus.  It will provide a faster more efficient service to those involved with scheduling.  You will be able to view all rooms and vehicles on campus, see when they are available, and book them yourself with ease.

I hope everyone has a great year and looks forward to the new changes on campus.
--Kent Freberg, Director of Facilities management

UMC Earns Full Membership in NCAA Division II
NCAA LogoNow that student athletes have arrived to begin practice for their respective fall sports at the University of Minnesota, Crookston (UMC), they will be taking an active role in the next stage of evolution for the campus and its athletics program.  UMC has been approved for full-fledged, active membership in Division II of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), effective September 1, 2002.

The UMC Golden Eagles will now be eligible to participate in NCAA championship playoffs.  For the past four years UMC had been a provisional member of NCAA Division II within the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC). Other benefits of full NCAA Division II membership include eligibility to vote at the annual NCAA Convention, coverage under the NCAA Catastrophic Athletics Injury Insurance Program, and access to the NCAA Division II Enhancement Fund.

UMC’s athletes have proven that they can compete at the Division II level.  Last year the Golden Eagles men’s and women’s basketball, women’s fast-pitch softball, and women’s volleyball teams all would have been eligible for NSIC post-season play.

Senske to Take Leave, Oseth Appointed Interim Men’s Basketball Coach
Gary Senske  Jeff Oseth
University of Minnesota, Crookston (UMC) Head Men’s Basketball Coach Gary Senske has requested a leave of absence.  UMC officials have granted the request, and Jeff Oseth, who has served as Senske’s assistant coach since 1995, has been appointed interim head coach.

“We certainly want to support Coach Senske in his request for a leave.  He has been vital to the success of our men’s basketball program, especially in our transition from junior college competition to NCAA Division II,” said UMC Chancellor Don Sargeant.

Senske’s request leaves a considerable void in the college’s basketball program.  Lon Boike, Director of Athletics at UMC, stated, “We support Gary’s decision, and we also want to maintain a level of consistency for our student athletes involved in the men’s basketball program.  We think Jeff Oseth is the best choice to step in and serve as interim coach without losing any momentum.”  In order to help support Oseth in his new role, the campus has also appointed a new assistant men’s basketball coach.  Kevin Forde will serve as Oseth’s assistant coach.  He comes to UMC from Southwest State University in Marshall, Minnesota.

UMC Mandala to Appear at State Fair
When the Minnesota State Fair opens on Thursday, August 22, UMC will be represented by an unusual and timely exhibition entitled “The UMC Mandala,” designed and executed by James W. Thomasson, Associate Professor of Philosophy at UMC.  The exhibition focuses on the numerous areas of study through which UMC strives to heighten students’ awareness of their place and responsibilities within the environment.

Classical mandalas were organized geometrically to illustrate that a synthesis of varied and distinctive elements in a unified schema is the basic nature of existence.  Mandala, the Sanskrit word for “circle,” symbolizes the wholeness.  That integrated structure, organized as it is around a unifying “center,” provides the impetus for The UMC Mandala.  The so-called “paths” built into the structure of the classical mandala are present also in a learning environment that seeks to “place” us in our environment.

The UMC Mandala

In The UMC Mandala the eight “paths” to integrated awareness of responsible stewardship of the environment are reflected in the eight petals of the “flowering” of unity:

  • Sustainable agriculture: including precision agriculture, recognizes the need to address issues such as world population, adequate and affordable food supply, and renewable sources and resources.

  • Land management: learning sound principles and practices for maintaining and enhancing the physical “home” that grounds our being.

  • Natural resources management: in broad scope and depth alike, learning about our “habitat” and all those species that share, adorn it, enhance it, and make it “habitable”.

  • Water and air quality: studying those practices that preserve and protect our supply of clean water and air.

  • Animal husbandry: learning to value and appreciate, as well as manage, a vital source of food, labor, recreational enjoyment, and companionship.

  • Economic development: learning and applying responsible principles to accomplish five key goals of economic development: economic progress, measured growth, job creation, enhanced quality of life, and socially responsible investing.

  • Strategic recycling: supporting responsible use of resources through a rigorous student-led program of recycling and revitalization.

  • Applied ethics: development of an under-graduate minor and  adult certificate program in Applied Ethics, with a strong component in environmental ethics.

UMC Teambackers “Take Flight Together”
“Taking Flight Together” is the theme for this year’s Teambackers Membership Drive.  The University of Minnesota, Crookston (UMC) established Teambackers to provide annual support for the athletic scholarship fund.  The fund drive begins August 21 and runs until September 21, 2002.  Scott Oliver, Associate Director of Development at UMC and Assistant Hockey Coach, says, “We are excited about this new membership drive and about the future of Golden Eagle athletics. Teambackers plays an important role in our athletic programs, and we hope that this will be a great new beginning for Teambackers.”

Support through memberships has helped the Golden Eagles achieve success in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) and NCAA II.  UMC has students participating in 11 varsity sports, including football, men’s and women’s basketball, hockey, men’s and women’s golf, soccer, softball, volleyball, equestrian, and baseball.  Teambackers supports nearly 300 student athletes.  These athletes excel in athletics, in the classroom, and give back to the community by participating in community service projects.  If you are interested in joining Teambackers or would like more information, please contact Scott Oliver at 218-281-8421 or by e-mail at soliver@mail.crk.umn.edu.

Homecoming 2002:  Come to the “Wild, Wild West”
