Prevention Grant Funded
The offices of Senators Mark Dayton and Norm Coleman have informed UMC that the Department of Education has awarded UMC a grant in the amount of $118,226 for 2003-04.  It is anticipated that the grant will be for a total of two years.

The grant, "Changing the Culture of Drinking on a Small University Campus," is designed to prevent high-risk student drinking and alcohol problems. The grant will enable UMC to implement a comprehensive campus-wide alcohol prevention program using a blend of social norms and environmental management approaches.

Efforts will focus on residence hall students, student athletes, and freshmen using the Core Alcohol and Drug Survey results and social norms to create a social marketing campaign. Primary activities will include the creation of a campus and community coalition prevention team and a UMC student advisory committee to promote peer education in efforts to reduce the frequency of binge drinking and other negative consequences of alcohol use and abuse.  A twelve-month, full-time alcohol prevention program coordinator and a ten-month, half-time senior administrative specialist will be hired under the terms of the grant.

The grant application was written by Don Cavalier, director of UMC’s Counseling and Career Center, with assistance from Liz Tollefson of the UMC Development Office and senior administrative specialist Meloni Rasmussen.  The grant's principal investigator will be Judy Neppel, assistant to the chancellor.  Please congratulate Don, Liz, and Meloni in bringing much needed financial assistance to UMC to address this critically important problem.
--Bob Nelson, Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs

Budget Update
On June 26, 2003, the Board of Regents approved President Robert Bruininks’ recommendations for the University’s operating budget for fiscal year 2003-04.  As we have discussed several times over the past six months, it is a budget that reflects the changing reality of higher education and its financing.  Here are some outcomes:

  • UMC’s operating budget will be $14.2 million next year
  • Total cost of a UMC education (tuition, fees, room and board) will increase approximately 8%
  • The combined tuition and university fee will increase 13%
  • Approximately 47 UMC staff positions have been altered or eliminated as a result of resignations, retirement incentives, and modified appointments

For more information about UMC’s tuition and fees, please refer to the Business Affairs website: <www.umcrookston.edu/people/services/businessaffairs>

For more information on the University’s budget, go to <www.budget.umn.edu>.

COAFES Listening Session July 8
The U of M’s College of Agricultural, Food and Environmental Science (COAFES) and the Minnesota Agricultural Experiment Station will host a “Listening Session” Tuesday, July 8, from 3 to 5:30 p.m. in Sahlstrom Conference Center’s Brown Dining Room.  The session is open to all interested citizens and is one of eight being held across the state.  COAFES logo

“An earlier set of listening sessions helped define our college priorities and ways to best use the college’s resources to serve the needs of Minnesota citizens.  The sessions this summer will provide input and feedback that will help guide the future of our college,” says Charles Muscoplat, vice president and dean of COAFES.

The listening session format is informal with an emphasis on listening to citizens. A short presentation will provide an overview of priorities and challenges.  The majority of the time will be spent in breakout sessions that help assure that college leadership and faculty can hear about the issues that are important to those attending.   The sessions will provide feedback on how the college is implementing its priorities of emphasizing exemplary education, promoting safe and healthy foods, enhancing agricultural systems, improving environmental quality, revitalizing Minnesota’s rural communities, and serving urban communities.

Apply NOW for the Fulbright Senior Scholar grant by electronic version (check out www.cies.org) The deadline is August 1.

  1. Select a designated country in your discipline where you want to teach for fall of 2004 (five months) or fall 2004 and spring 2005 (10 months)

  2. Provide a project statement – three to five pages long

  3. Provide updated vita – no more than six pages long

It is as “simple” as that!  As the Campus Representative for Fulbright, I highly recommend this program.  I believe it is much easier to apply electronically for this grant than the traditional method of putting all the above papers together to mail to the Washington D.C. office.  I’ve done two Fulbright Scholar Grants already in Kyrgyzstan and Ukraine.  I just recently applied by electronic version to Lithuania for five months, Fall of 2004.  If you want a copy of my project statement, I would be happy to e-mail it to you.  Please write to:  grayx073@mail.crk.umn.edu.

I would also be happy to answer any questions you have about this great opportunity to TEACH ABROAD!
--Kristina Gray
