Burton Named New Chancellor
Velmer S. Burton, Jr.University of Minnesota President Robert Bruininks has named Velmer S. Burton, Jr., 40, chancellor of the University of Minnesota, Crookston (UMC), pending approval by the board of regents.  Upon the Board's approval, Burton's appointment as UMC chancellor will begin effective June 30.

Burton holds a doctorate in higher education management from the University of Pennsylvania and a doctorate in sociology from the University of Cincinnati, where he also received his master’s and bachelor’s degrees.  He is currently dean of the Graduate School and professor of sociology at North Dakota State University in Fargo, where he has expanded student recruitment efforts and implemented numerous new graduate programs.  Prior to his work at NDSU, he served as department head at Ferris State University and then as associate provost for graduate studies at Southeast Missouri State University.

Since 1986, Burton has published numerous scholarly works and has held faculty positions at Washington State University-Pullman, Sam Houston State University, and Illinois State University.  He has also received awards for his teaching.

“I see this as a unique opportunity to play a role in the continued development of the University of Minnesota, Crookston in serving Northwest Minnesota and the entire state,” said Burton.  “I look forward to joining the administration, faculty, staff and students as the campus continues its evolution within the University of Minnesota system.  I feel strongly that the university’s teaching, research, and outreach mission continues to have great value in serving the citizens of the region and state.”

Community Invited to Sargeant Recognition Event June 6
Don and Mary Beth SageantThe University of Minnesota, Crookston extends an open invitation to the residents of Crookston and the surrounding area to attend a special event in honor of UMC Chancellor Don Sargeant and his wife, Mary Beth.  The event will be held Friday, June 6, from 9:30 p.m. to 12:30 a.m. at the Northland Inn.  Admission is free.  Hors d’oeuvres and a cash bar will be available.  Music will be provided by regional band Groove Union.

Appropriate attire is business casual.  Those planning to attend are encouraged to wear maroon and gold, UMC’s official school colors.

The event is in recognition of the many professional contributions made and deep community commitment shown by the Sargeants over the past 33 years and to offer congratulations to Don Sargeant as he steps down from the chancellorship after 18 years.

Sargeant has provided distinguished leadership as UMC’s chancellor since 1985, and, prior to that, as a faculty member and administrator at UMC since 1970.  During his tenure as chancellor, he has guided the campus from a two-year to a four-year baccalaureate mission and has provided the vision for UMC to become America’s first “Laptop University.”

Gifts are not necessary, but funds will be accepted for the Chancellor Donald and Mary Beth Sargeant Endowed Scholarship Fund.    For more information on the scholarship fund, please contact Mike Meyer in the UMC Development Office at 218-281-8434 or via e-mail at meyer243@umn.edu.
