News Items Burton Named
New Chancellor Burton holds a doctorate in higher education management from the University of Pennsylvania and a doctorate in sociology from the University of Cincinnati, where he also received his master’s and bachelor’s degrees. He is currently dean of the Graduate School and professor of sociology at North Dakota State University in Fargo, where he has expanded student recruitment efforts and implemented numerous new graduate programs. Prior to his work at NDSU, he served as department head at Ferris State University and then as associate provost for graduate studies at Southeast Missouri State University. Since 1986, Burton has published numerous scholarly works and has held faculty positions at Washington State University-Pullman, Sam Houston State University, and Illinois State University. He has also received awards for his teaching. “I see this as a unique opportunity to play a role in the continued development of the University of Minnesota, Crookston in serving Northwest Minnesota and the entire state,” said Burton. “I look forward to joining the administration, faculty, staff and students as the campus continues its evolution within the University of Minnesota system. I feel strongly that the university’s teaching, research, and outreach mission continues to have great value in serving the citizens of the region and state.” Community Invited to
Sargeant Recognition Event June 6 Appropriate attire is business casual. Those planning to attend are encouraged to wear maroon and gold, UMC’s official school colors. The event is in recognition of the many professional contributions made and deep community commitment shown by the Sargeants over the past 33 years and to offer congratulations to Don Sargeant as he steps down from the chancellorship after 18 years. Sargeant has provided distinguished leadership as UMC’s chancellor since 1985, and, prior to that, as a faculty member and administrator at UMC since 1970. During his tenure as chancellor, he has guided the campus from a two-year to a four-year baccalaureate mission and has provided the vision for UMC to become America’s first “Laptop University.” Gifts are not necessary, but funds will be accepted for the Chancellor Donald and Mary Beth Sargeant Endowed Scholarship Fund. Relay for Life June 13 Teams of eight to twelve people collect donations before the event. During the Relay, at least one team member is walking around the mall at all times. There is a community party atmosphere with food, entertainment and a luminary lighting ceremony. Several campus staff members (current and retired) will take part in the Relay for Life on various teams. They include Jack and Mary Bywater, Gayle Schuster, Jacquie Normandin, Dennis Magsam, Karen Murphy, Gail Hasbrouck, Kristi Puppe, Trish Ramstad, Barbara Ricord, Pam Sullivan, and Darlene Scheving. Introduce Velmer S. Burton, Jr., Set for June 16 Board of Regents to Hold
Annual Public Hearing on Budget June 17 At its June 13 meeting the Board will review the president's budget recommendations for the biennium. The Board is expected to act on the budget at a special meeting on Thursday, June 26, from 9:30 to 10 a.m. The state Legislature has reduced the University's biennial budget by $196.2 million, or nearly 15 percent. "We encourage students, faculty, staff and other interested parties to participate in this hearing," said Maureen Reed, chair of the Board of Regents. "The Board values input from the university and broader community on spending priorities as we deliberate and set the University's budget." Individuals wishing to speak at the forum must sign up by noon Tuesday, June 10, by calling the board office at (612) 625-6300 or writing to: Board of Regents, Suite 600, McNamara Alumni Center, 200 Oak St. S.E., Minneapolis MN 55455. The request must include the speaker's name, home and e-mail addresses, the group represented and/or relationship to the University, if any, and a general presentation topic. Each speaker will be limited to five minutes. If there are more speakers than time allotted, the Board will draw up a representative list. Hallinglag of America Stevne at UMC June
19-22 Hallinglag of America is a group made up of descendants of immigrants who came to North America from Hallingdal in Buskerud, Norway. A stevne is a time to get together with others who are interested in the history, genealogy, culture, crafts, and food of their Norwegian homeland. NWSA Reunion Set for June
27-28 The event begins Friday, June 27, at 7 p.m. with a social at the Northland Inn of Crookston. Registration begins on Saturday, June 28, at 9 a.m. and continues through 5 p.m. in the Kiehle Rotunda. Saturday’s events include a dedication of the Heritage Room (Kiehle 124) at 10:45 a.m., a bus tour of the campus at 11 a.m., lunch at the Kiehle Rotunda from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. The annual business meeting is scheduled for Saturday at 12:30 p.m. in Kiehle Auditorium, followed at 1 p.m. by a “Salute to the 50s” program, also in Kiehle Auditorium. Class photos and class meetings will take place from 2 to 5 p.m. A buffet dinner is scheduled to begin at 5:30 p.m. in Brown Dining Room, followed by a program honoring the Top Aggies and the Distinguished Service Award recipient. Top Aggies for 2003 include: Johanna Nabben Green ’23 of Grafton, ND; Mrytle Hanson Marti ’38 of St. Paul, MN; Rodney Lindstrom ’33 of Lake Park, MN; and Les Nielsen ’55 of Plymouth, MN. Two retirement parties are planned to honor six University of Minnesota, Crookston employees who will be leaving us this summer. Please join the campus community in congratulating these staff members on their years of service to UMC and in wishing them the best in the future. On Tuesday, June 17, Sharon Olson, Dennis Kuzel, and Ardis Thompson will be the guests of honor at a retirement reception from 3 to 4:30 p.m. in Brown Dining Room of Sahlstrom Conference Center.On Friday, June 20, Betty Murphy, Gail Hasbrouck, and Toby Solberg will be the guests of honor at a retirement reception from 3 to 4:30 p.m. at the Peterson Gazebo on the UMC Mall (rain site: Brown Dining Room).Friends and colleagues of Jack and Mary Bywater, longtime employees of UMC now retired, are invited to attend a farewell social set for Thursday, June 26, from 7 to 10 p.m. at the Northland Inn of Crookston. The Bywaters will be moving to Leavenworth, Washington, in July. A "Things to Remember" Program will begin at 8 p.m., and part of that program will provide an "open mic" opportunity for anyone wishing to share a memory associated with the Bywaters.
