the ceremonies. Regent David Metzen will bring greetings from the
Board of Regents. Chancellor Don Sargeant will provide the address
for the graduating class as this will be his final commencement as
chancellor.

president of the UMC Alumni Association (UMCAA), will offer
congratulatory remarks from the UMCAA, and Jean Korkowski, president of
the Crookston Student Association (CSA), will speak on behalf of the
class of 2003 before passing the academic torch to CSA president-elect
Kyle Rollness.
Immediately following
the ceremonies a reception will be help in Brown Dining Room for all
graduates and their families. The campus community is invited to
attend.
At 4 p.m. that
afternoon a special commissioning and bar pinning ceremony will be held
in Youngquist Auditorium for three graduates taking part in the Air
Force Reserve Officer Training Corps (AFROTC). Officials from
Detachment 610 will present commissions to David Fulkerson, Mark
Hendricks, and Aaron Muller, who will have earned the rank of second
lieutenants in the United States Air Force. All friends, family,
faculty and staff are invited to attend.
Higher Learning Commission
Accreditation Symposium May 13
UMC is scheduled to have its
Higher Learning Commission (formerly North Central Association)
accreditation visit in April 2005. To help us get started preparing for
this visit, a UMC-wide symposium is scheduled for Tuesday, May 13, from
3 to 4:30 p.m. in Dowell Hall 212-220. The preparation for an
accreditation visit is quite intensive and will involve the entire
campus throughout the process. This symposium will acquaint the UMC
community with the new criteria, and the accreditation process, as well
as the process we will follow; it is important for the campus community
to attend. Light refreshments will be served.

End of Year Faculty and Staff
Celebration May 15
All faculty and staff members of
the University community—UMC, NWROC, Extension, NGP Inc., AURI, RSVP,
VolunTEAM, VTP, and Retirees, and spouses—are invited to attend the end
of the year campus celebration. The event is scheduled for 4 to 5:30
p.m. on Thursday, May 15, at the Peterson Gazebo on the campus mall
(rain site: Brown Dining Room). The awards program to honor our
outstanding employees will begin at 4 p.m., with dinner to follow. At
5:30 p.m., the celebration will move to Brown Dining Room for dessert
and to honor Don and Mary Beth Sargeant for their contributions to UMC.
A short program is planned.
The theme for the
celebration is “Thanks for the Memories.” Faculty and staff are
encouraged to scour their scrapbooks and photo albums for fun University
photos from the past. Send your photos to Andrew Svec or Peg Sherven
and be sure to put your name on the back so they can be returned after
they’re scanned.
Electronics Pickup, May 20
As part of the semi-annual
hazardous waste pickup, the University Hazardous Waste Program will
collect unused electronics. If you have old monitors, CPU’s, television
monitors, printers, virtually anything with electronic circuitry, within
your department, it must be discarded properly. They cannot go into the
regular garbage stream.
-
Check to see if there
is a University inventory sticker on the piece.
-
If there is, contact
Bonnie Anderson for a property discard form.
-
Complete the form,
return to Bonnie.
-
Contact Tom Feiro at
-8300 or tfeiro to arrange for pickup.
Any further questions,
please contact Tom.

Higher
Learning Self Study Steering Committee Appointed
UMC is scheduled for the next
comprehensive self study accreditation visit with the Higher Learning
Commission in April 2005. I have asked the following faculty and staff
to serve on the campus self study steering committee: Jennifer Wilson,
chair; Bill Peterson, vice chair; Rose Koch; Bob Nelson; Doug Knowlton;
Dan Svedarsky; Bruce Brorson; Jane Sims; Kyle Rollness, CSA president;
Andrew Svec, ex officio; Viet Doan, ex officio; and Judy Neppel, ex
officio.
This is a great
opportunity for UMC to renew itself as a part of the self study
process. How will and where will present and future campus programs
and services be planned, budgeted, implemented, and evaluated?
This larger picture should be captured and documented in the self study.

American Cancer Society
Relay for Life at UMC
June 13
I am one, in a group of UMC
staff, who will be walking in the Polk County American Cancer Society
Relay for Life on June 13 here on our campus. A luminary can be
purchased in memory of someone who has passed away from cancer, who
presently has cancer, or has been a survivor of cancer. Each bag can be
decorated with a theme of what that person enjoys doing, a picture of
that person or just a name. It is a white bag with a candle inside that
burns all night long. Last year, we had over 1000 lighted luminaries
set out around the UMC Mall. It was so impressive and very emotional
when we lit all the luminaries after it was dark. I was so glad I was
involved in this wonderful rally and will continue to do this as long as
my body will allow me to be.
If you would care to
purchase a luminary for a special person, please let me know and I will
either bring you a bag to decorate or take care of the name on it for
you. The amount is $5 a luminary. Just respond yes or no and I will
take it from there. Thanks.

Summer
Distance Ed Courses
The Academic Standards and Policy
Committee on 5/2/03 adopted the following new policy effective
immediately:
Students planning to
register for more than 9 credits during the summer term must secure
permission from the Academic Standards and Policy Committee.
The 9 credit limit is
irrespective of whether the course is distance delivered. Thus, the one
course distance ed limit does NOT apply to the summer term. It WILL
remain in effect for fall and spring semesters.
--Bob Nelson,
Vice Chancellor for Student
Affairs and Registrar
Reminder:
Graded Paper and Exam Distribution and Notification Require
Confidentiality
As finals approach, it is
important for faculty and staff to keep in mind that posting of grades
by any identifiable information (e.g., student identification number,
last name, social security number, etc.) is prohibited by the Family
Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA).
To ensure
confidentiality but still allow grades to be posted, instructors are
advised to establish a unique code known only to the student and
instructor. Grade lists should not be listed alphabetically.
Also, faculty need to
be aware that distributing graded papers or exams en masse, such as in
the hallway or in a box on a table, without checking for proper
identification is a violation of FERPA. Graded papers and exams
can be mailed to students in pre-addressed campus mail envelopes or
pre-stamped and addressed U.S. mail envelopes. Also, if space and
personnel allow, students can pick up their exams or papers from a
department member who is responsible for checking the student's
identification.
For more information
about FERPA contact the University's expert, Tina Falkner at
ROVIC001@sossgw.stu.umn.edu or 612-625-1064, or locally at UMC, Bob
Nelson at 281-8560.
