Minnesota Transfer Curriculum Open Forum April 17
As many of you are aware, there
is a proposal to bring our general education requirements more closely
into alignment with the Minnesota Transfer Curriculum. Details and an
update of this proposal will be forthcoming. In order to facilitate
discussion and understanding of this possible change an open forum
will be held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Thursday, April 17, in
Sahlstrom Conference Center 131. This will be a drop in type of
forum, and anyone who has questions or who would like to participate
in the discussion is invited to attend at any time that is. Thanks.

Campus
Celebration April 22
Thanks for giving! Faculty and
staff at UMC have long been the very heart of what makes this
institution great. This was shown yet again during Campaign Minnesota,
when you joined 11,000 other University of Minnesota faculty/staff
donors and made gifts. There will be special events on all U of M
campuses to commemorate faculty and staff giving during Campaign
Minnesota.
The Office of
Development invites you to join us on Tuesday, April 22, from 8:30 to 11
a.m. in the Kiehle Rotunda, for a cup of coffee or hot tea and a Krispy
Kreme Doughnut or an Einstein Brother’s Bagel. We would like to say
thank you to all our faculty and staff donors and present you with a
small gift of appreciation. Please invite your spouse to join us for
this event.

UMC Theater
to Perform “Run for Your Wife”
April 22-25
Students involved in UMC Theater
will perform the comedy “Run for Your Wife” Tuesday, April 22, through
Friday, April 25, nightly starting at 7:30 p.m. in Kiehle Auditorium.
Tickets can be purchased at the door and cost $1 for UMC students with
UCard ID and $4 for others.
“Run for Your Wife,” a British farce by Ray Cooney, is the
story of taxi cab driver John Smith, his wife Mary, and his
other wife Barbara. He is able to get away with this double
life because of his irregular work schedule—that is until he is involved
in an accident. When the police come to investigate, complications
arise as the harried cabbie tries to keep his two lives separate and
make sure his wives don’t find out about each other.
The cast, directed by
UMC student Marissa Koppy of Big Lake, MN, includes:
John Smith – Nathan Hoff of Ada, MN
Mary Smith – Diane Delperdang of Burnsville, MN
Barbara Smith – Jennifer Orcutt of Conrad, MT
Stanley Gardner – Daniel Webster of McIntosh, MN
Detective-Sergeant Troughton – Noelle Jarvis of Eden Prairie, MN
Detective Sergeant Porterhouse – Matthew Johnson of Bigfork, MN

22 Great Conversations: Biotechnology and the
Environment
The Great Conversations Series continues April 22
with “Biotechnology and the Environment.”
Balancing the safety of our food supply with
ecological concerns presents one of the great challenges of the 21st
century. U of M professor Anne Kapuscinski, internationally renowned
for her work on the ecological risks of genetically engineered
organisms, is the founding Director of the Institute for Social,
Economic, and Ecological Sustainability. Margaret Mellon is one of the
nation's most respected experts on biotechnology and food safety. She
is Food and Environment Program Director at the Union of Concerned
Scientists in Washington, D.C. and currently serves on the USDA's
advisory committee on agricultural biotechnology. The event will be
held on Tuesday, April 22, at 7:30 p.m., in the Ted Mann Concert Hall on
the Twin Cities Campus. Learn more at <www.cce.umn.edu/conversations>.
At UMC the conversation
will be shown via live telecast at 7:30 p.m. in Dowell Hall Room 220,
and it is free and open to all students, faculty, staff, and the general
public. Refreshments will be served.
Earth Day
Poster Contest Tuesday, April 22
Earth Day will be celebrated
nationally on Tuesday, April 22. As part of the Earth Day Celebration,
the UMC Concerts & Lectures Committee will sponsor a poster contest.
Students who have specific interests in topics which are of an
environmental concern are invited to prepare a short report in the form
of poster.
Possible topics
include sustainable energy sources such as wind or biomass, waste
reduction and recycling, water quality, habitat restoration techniques,
pros and cons of organic farming techniques, threatened plant/animal
species or topics related to the human impact on the environment. You
are not restricted to these topics.
Poster set-up will
take place in Morsels in the
Sahlstrom Conference
Center on Tuesday, April 22, at 11:30 a.m. Judging will begin at noon
and continue for approximately one hour.
Prizes of $75, $50,
and $25 (or their cash equivalent) will be awarded to the student, or
group of students for first, second, and third places, respectively.
Projects will be judged on content, creativity, professional display,
and the students' ability to verbally communicate their ideas.
Presentations will be judged by members of the Concerts & Lectures
Committee.
To participate,
students must submit a project title and brief explanation by using the
submission form provided below and be willing to be on hand to explain
the content of the poster from

Insurance Coverage on
Leased Vehicles
Please be aware of the following
issues and priorities regarding insurance coverage for vehicles leased
from an outside vendor:
-
When possible, it is
recommended to reserve and use one of UMC’s vehicles for your travel
needs. This is the simplest and cheapest method of leasing.
-
Should a vehicle not
be available from fleet services, and the need arise to lease from an
outside vendor, you will need to purchase the collision damage waiver
from the vendor. In the case of cars or nine-or-fewer passenger vans,
it is possible to use your University GE Mastercard to lease that
vehicle. Doing so provides collision damage waiver coverage at no
extra cost, eliminating the need to purchase this coverage from the
vendor.
-
Please note that the
GE Mastercard collision damage waiver does NOT cover 15 passenger
vans. You will need to purchase collision damage waiver coverage from
the vendor for all 15 passenger vans leased from outside vendors.
(Those of you who lease 15 passenger vans locally are aware that at
least one vendor does not provide insurance. We are working on some
alternatives here, and as soon as they are sorted out, I shall let you
know. Until then, the Twin Cities has offered to cover us under an
old self insurance program at the same $31 / day rate. Hopefully,
we’ll have the new alternatives in place soon, but if you need this
coverage in the interim, please let me know. We’ll need to put it in
place BEFORE you lease the van.)
Please let me know if
you have any questions. Thanks.

VolunTEAM Update

This week’s featured Crookston VolunTEAM project is Meals on Wheels.
Volunteers are needed to deliver meals the week of May 19-23. It’s a
rewarding way to spend your lunch break, and is more fun if you deliver
the meals with a friend or colleague. All you have to do is pick up the
meal coolers at the rear entrance to Riverview Hospital at 11:30 a.m.
sharp. Delivering a route takes a half-hour to 45 minutes, and you
return the empty coolers afterward. If you’re interested in helping
out, or want more information, call Alva Halos at 281-3322 or visit <www.volunteam.org>.
UMC has not committed to delivering Meals on Wheels that week, but the
VolunTEAM is helping Home Delivered Meals, Inc. publicize their pressing
need for delivery drivers. With students already gone by May 19, the
Home Delivered Meals board of directors is hoping UMC faculty and staff
might find some time to help.
If you’re interested in
learning more about this project or the Crookston VolunTEAM, please
contact Mike in the VolunTEAM office (Dowell 112) at 281-8526 or
chris282@umcrookston.edu. Or, simply visit <www.volunteam.org>.

SIFE National Exposition on May 11-13 in Kansas City, MO, to compete
