Update
on Chancellor Search
I want to take this opportunity
to update you on the status of the UMC chancellor search. In short, we
are moving full steam ahead. Chuck Bunting, search consultant from A.T.
Kearney, has been working tirelessly to generate a strong pool of
candidates for the position and, based on our recent conversation, he
has succeeded. The search committee has begun reviewing applications
and the first set of interviews will take place in the first week or two
in April. Final on-campus interviews will take place at the end of
April or beginning of May. We are on track to have a new chancellor in
place by this summer or, at the latest, the beginning of the academic
year.
I want to thank the campus community for its continued support of this
process and for your participation in the discussions with Chuck Bunting
in January. As always, please feel free to contact me or one of the
search committee members if you have any questions or feedback regarding
the search.

& Executive Vice Provost, Chair, UMC Chancellor Search Committee

Space Assignment Recommendations
The campus Space Assignment
Committee has made the recommendations to the Executive Committee listed
below.
-
Assign Hill 15 as
student lounge/study area and Hill 115 as conference room during
Student Center Construction.
At the time the original decisions regarding re-location of Bede
services and programs were made last year the assumption was that the
Atrium would continue to be available for use as a student
study/lounge area to serve the east side of campus, specifically Owen
and Hill halls. However, with the incorporation of the Atrium within
the new Student Center this will not be possible. Therefore, the
Committee has received a request to re-assign Hill 115 as an interim
student lounge/study space during the construction period. A review
of the current year’s class schedule reveals that one class was
scheduled in this room Fall 2002 (Math 0992) and one class in Spring
2003 (STC 3652). Due to concerns by the Committee regarding potential
noise problems affecting nearby classrooms the recommendation is to
assign Hill 15 as an interim study/lounge area and move the existing
conference room table and chairs to Hill 115. Hopefully this
will minimize any noise problems.
-
Assign Owen 104 as
additional storage location for AODAP and RYLA materials.
Room has already been designated as shared space for PIM lab prep,
AgNatR storage, and outing equipment seasonal storage. The Committee
received a request for storage space for AODAP and Camp RYLA materials
(8 boxes of material and posters, 4 tubs of information, 100 4'by8'
posters). The recommendation is to assign these to Owen 104. This is
in addition to the previous assignment of storage space for
out-of-season outing equipment materials.
-
Assign Dowell 123
as Multicultural & International Programs office and Multicultural
Lounge and Dowell 115 as office for Silvernagel and Yon.
Dowell 115 was previously occupied by Dan Lim who has moved to
Kiehle. Mario Prada, Multicultural and International Programs
Director, was recommended to be assigned to Dowell 115 with the move
to be effective 3/15/03 during Student Center construction. Craig
Silvernagel and Tamara Yon (adjunct) had previously been sharing
office space in Dowell 215 with Eric Burgess and were temporarily
assigned to Dowell 115 when Dowell 215 was re-assigned to DeMuth and
Center for Faculty Research (Summer 2002). Dowell 123 had originally
been assigned to be shared by AODAP and Diversity Coordinator. AODAP
position will not be filled and Diversity Coordinator has requested to
remain in adjunct space in Selvig.

Vice Chancellor for Student
Affairs/Registrar,
Space Committee Chairperson

Accolades

The UMC Golden Eagles Women’s Basketball Team upset Concordia St.
Paul for the second time to advance to the semifinals of the NSIC
tournament. Amy Kuznia, a junior from Stephen, made two free
throws with 1.7 seconds remaining in the game to give UMC the win 66-65
over Concordia-St. Paul in the Northern Sun Conference first round game
on Wednesday, March 5.
UMC’s Cinderella hopes
were kept alive on Saturday, March 8, when Cathy Behr, a junior
from Willmar, scored 17 of her 24 points in the second half that
afternoon to lead the Golden Eagles to a 79-73 victory over Northern
State in the second round semifinals of the NSIC tournament.
That win allowed the
Golden Eagles to advance to meet U of M, Duluth in the championship game
on Sunday, March 9, with the winner receiving the conference's automatic
bid to the NCAA Division II tournament. Despite a competitive game
where Karna Plaine,
a freshman from Hatton, N.D., scored 20 points to lead UMC, Cathy Behr
added 15, and Amy Kuznia took 14 (4 of 6 shots from 3-point range),
the UMD Bulldogs outlasted UMC 68-60, ending the Golden Eagles' hopes
for a trip to the NCAA Division II tournament. Still, kudos to Coach
Mike Curfman and all the members of the 2002-2003 UMC Golden Eagles
Women’s Basketball Team for their hard work and accomplishments!
