Farewell to Bede March
5
A farewell to Bede
Hall is scheduled for Wednesday, March 5, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Among the activities for students, faculty, staff, and alumni will be
a Bede Trivia Contest, photos in front of the building, and “If these
walls could talk,” where people will have an opportunity to express
their thoughts about Bede by writing a message on the wall.
Refreshments will be served. The building will officially close on
Friday, March 7, to begin asbestos abatement prior to demolition,
which will prepare the site for the new student center building
project.

U of M TEL Seminar Series
Features UMC’s David DeMuth March 5
David
DeMuth, assistant professor of physics and math, will present
“Web Tools for
Teaching, Research, and Service” as part of the University of
Minnesota’s Technology Enhanced Learning (TEL) Seminar Series. The
presentation will be delivered on the UMC campus through ITV from the
Twin Cities Campus in 4 Hill Hall at noon on Wednesday, March 5.
DeMuth received a 2000-01
TEL small grant to develop Internet-based assessment tools for an
introductory physics course. DeMuth and his assistants, UMC students
Tim Gerla, Anders Berggren, and Rick Egeland, are using the Linux
operating system, server-side Perl scripts, and a MySQL database server
to deliver Web-based interactive platform-independent content for that
course, including:
They are simultaneously
developing custom Web applications to support other research and service
activities. For example, researchers participating in the Cryogenic
Dark Matter Search (CDMS) project at the Soudan Laboratory are using the
notebook system, and members of the Faculty Assembly and Faculty
Consultative committee on the Crookston campus are using the meeting and
agenda system.
Book Signing and Discussion
March 6

associate professor
of philosophy, and James Robert Doster, Jr., will appear at a book
signing and discussion for their recently published collaboration,
Be the
Best That You Can Be...Every Day of Your Life - The Collected Wisdom of
"Chick's Chestnuts."
The event is
scheduled for Thursday, March 6, from 2 to 4 p.m. in Sahlstrom
Conference Center 131.
Lobby Day March 6
More than 40 UMC
students have signed up to travel en masse to the University of
Minnesota, Twin Cities campus and to the State Capitol in
St. Paul
on Thursday, March 6, to meet with legislators and to lobby for support
for the University of Minnesota System. A bus will leave the UMC Atrium
at 5 a.m. that morning. For more information, please contact UMC

Crookston Chamber Career
Day March 11
The 2003 Career Day, sponsored by
the Crookston Chamber of Commerce’s Education Committee, will again be
held on the UMC Campus on Tuesday, March 11, from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m.
This year eleventh grade students from Climax, Crookston, Fisher, Red
Lake Falls, Fosston, Oklee, Stephen/Argyle, Warren, Kittson Central, and
Waubun High Schools, will be attending the event. There will be over
350 students attending and around 40 occupational speakers visiting with
the students during the event. The schedule for the day is listed
below.

Minnesota Senate Majority Leader, and gubernatorial candidate in 2002,
will be speaking to the students. Mr. Moe has a wealth of experience in
the political arena and is very much looking forward to talking to the

Call for
Artwork!
In recognition of Women’s History
Month we are looking for works of art such as quilts, pottery,
photography, painting, and any other forms of art that could be
displayed. We would like to be able to display the artwork March 12
through 21, so would appreciate display items before Wednesday, March
12. We are inviting UMC faculty and staff including wives and families,
UMC retirees and alumni to contribute projects, hobbies, etc. to be
displayed. Please consider allowing us to display your talents or
encourage someone you know who should be showing off her artistic skill.

Women’s History Month Activities
March is Women’s
History Month. Several special speakers have been scheduled in
observance. Below is a short summary of the various events and dates.
Monday, March 17, 4
p.m., Kiehle 116, “Voices Merging” Poetry Reading, presented by
students from the Twin Cities Women’s Center. All persons who enjoy
listening to poetry are invited to attend, and those who also write
poetry are encouraged to share their writing at this session.
Tuesday, March 18, 7 p.m., Kiehle Auditorium, public lecture by Heidi
Heitkamp, former attorney general of North Dakota, cancer survivor,
and N.D. gubernatorial candidate, speaking on “Lessons I Have
Learned.” This Tuesday evening presentation will also feature the
initiation of a new scholarship on campus, and it is preceded by an
informal hors d’oeuvre reception in Kiehle Rotunda beginning at 6 p.m.
Everyone is welcome.
Wednesday, March 26, 12
noon, Youngquist Auditorium, Barbara Handy-Marchello, associate
professor of history at the University of North Dakota offers a look
back at the often overlooked history of the Red River Valley farm women
in a lecture entitled, “Land, Liquor and the Women of Hatton, North
Dakota.” Coffee and juice will be available in the Seminar Room
following the presentation.

for Tea and a Good Book” hosted by Rebekah Stortroen and Claudia
Barton with recommendations for great Women’s History Month readings
presented by Rachel Sundbom, UMC grad and employee of Lake Agassiz
Regional Library. Enjoy a selection of fine teas, delicate desserts,

March 21
The Spring Semester meeting of
the Campus Assembly will be held, Friday, March 21, at 3:30 p.m. in
Dowell Hall 225. Please note the time change.

Accolades

Above (from left), Minnesota Chapter of The
Wildlife Society Awards Chair Janet Boe, Dan Oberg, and Ross Hier at the
recent annual meeting of The Chapter in Willmar
Crookston was once again placed on the
conservation map when Ross Hier, assistant wildlife manager for
the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) and adjunct faculty
member for UMC’s Natural Resources Department, and Daniel Oberg,
wildlife management student at UMC, received awards from the Minnesota
Chapter of The Wildlife Society at the group’s annual meeting in
Willmar. The Minnesota Award, presented to Hier, recognizes outstanding
contributions to Minnesota's wildlife and natural resources. The
Student Conservationist Award, presented to Oberg, recognizes the top
wildlife student from among all of Minnesota’s colleges and
universities. Oberg, a wildlife management student from Isanti,
Minnesota, is the fourth UMC student in the last six years to receive
this top honor.
Kristina Gray, lecturer for composition, has been selected to
present at the 37th Annual Convention of the Teachers of
English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL), set for March 24-29 in
Baltimore, Maryland. Gray will present “Seeing Every Word, Hearing
Every Voice,” a demonstration of the effective use of closed-captioned
movies in the teaching and learning of English, on March 28. Learn more

This international conference generally draws up to 10,000 attendees.
Melinda McVey McCluskey, assistant
professor of horticulture, recently fulfilled the necessary
qualifications to be awarded the designation “Certified Nursery and
Landscape Professional” by the Minnesota Nursery and Landscape
Association.
UMC has been selected
to participate in a national study of student civic engagement on
college campuses. The study, sponsored by the National Campus Compact,
will focus on measuring the extent and nature of student civic
engagement and on better understanding student conceptions of politics
and citizenship. UMC will be one of five case study sites selected from
among 200 colleges and universities. Case studies will be conducted by
RMC Research Corporation and will involve a 2-3 day site visit in late
March or early April.
