U of M TEL Seminar Series Features UMC’s David DeMuth March 5
David DeMuthDavid DeMuth, assistant professor of physics and math, will present “Web Tools for Teaching, Research, and Service” as part of the University of Minnesota’s Technology Enhanced Learning (TEL) Seminar Series.  The presentation will be delivered on the UMC campus through ITV from the Twin Cities Campus in 4 Hill Hall at noon on Wednesday, March 5.

DeMuth received a 2000-01 TEL small grant to develop Internet-based assessment tools for an introductory physics course.  DeMuth and his assistants, UMC students Tim Gerla, Anders Berggren, and Rick Egeland, are using the Linux operating system, server-side Perl scripts, and a MySQL database server to deliver Web-based interactive platform-independent content for that course, including:

  • lecture preparation materials

  • classroom polls

  • homework materials

  • a laboratory notebook system

They are simultaneously developing custom Web applications to support other research and service activities.  For example, researchers participating in the Cryogenic Dark Matter Search (CDMS) project at the Soudan Laboratory are using the notebook system, and members of the Faculty Assembly and Faculty Consultative committee on the Crookston campus are using the meeting and agenda system.
