UMC to Host High School
Tournaments Starting February 25
The UMC Athletic Department will
be hosting high school tournaments beginning Tuesday, February 25, and
they will run through Friday, March 14. During this time we ask that
students, faculty, and staff do not park on the Mall by the Sports
Center, as that area is reserved for buses. For those of you using the
Fitness Center, we ask that you use the South Knutson Entrance. Parking
in the lots will be at a premium at times, so we thank you for your
cooperation. Students are asked to walk around the Sports Center
instead of cutting through it.
It is estimated that
25,000–30,000 people (fans, players, coaches, school administrators)
come to our campus at this time, and we certainly appreciate all the
campus departments that assist in making the tournaments successful.
Following is a list of tournament dates and times. All ticket gates
open one hour prior to game time.

Bergland Appreciation Event
March 14
Bob and Helen Bergland have
devoted their lives to public service, with charm, grace, humility, and
humor. They enshrine a model of public service dedicated to the common
good.
We are joining with
Vice President Walter Mondale, Chair, to ask you help for these two
outstanding friends in their time of need. As you may know, in June the
City of Roseau, Minnesota experienced the worst flooding ever. Fourteen
inches of rain fell in 14 hours, inundating everything within 2 miles of
the Roseau River. Nearly every building in the city was flooded and all
surrounding farmland suffered total crop failure.
Bob and Helen returned
to their native Roseau in 1994, building a home on their farm, 1 mile
south of Roseau. They built the home three feet above the highest water
level ever recorded in the region. Because of this, their insurance
agent advised against flood insurance coverage. This precaution clearly
was inadequate, and the SBA estimated that flood damage to their home
was $140,000, with no insurance and little help from state or federal
relief agencies.
Bob and Helen Bergland
have devoted their lives to the public good. Now we are asking friends
of Bob and Helen Bergland to give something back to these outstanding
citizens. We ask you to honor their public service with a private
contribution to help them recover from this crippling loss.
Please join us for a
reception to honor the Berglands …

VolunTEAM Update

This week’s featured Crookston
VolunTEAM project is found at LSS/Respite Care, where there is an
ongoing need for friendly visitors/companions to visit the chronically
ill, frail elderly or disabled individuals older than age 60. Volunteers
provide safety and companionship while the caregiver is away running
errands or going to appointments. Hours are flexible. For more
information, contact Jan Aamoth at 281-5975, or simply visit
www.volunteam.org and click Volunteer Opportunities.
If you’re interested in
learning more about the Crookston VolunTEAM, please contact Mike

Accolades
UMC senior Joe Hasz of
Foreston, Minnesota, broke the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC)
all-time record for career scoring in men’s basketball conference play
during a Feb. 22 game against Winona State. Hasz now has 1342 points,
breaking the previous record of 1329 set back in 1981 by Dan Hagen of St
Cloud State. That could go higher, as there are still two games left in
the regular season.

Ken Myers,
Associate Professor of Hotel, Restaurant, and Institutional Management,
will be a presenter at the Midwest Association of Hospitality Educators
(MAHE) Conference, February 23-25, at the Minneapolis Convention
Center. He will present “The Technology of the Professional Recipe
Manager (PRM).”
PRM is a simple, yet
powerful recipe management database tool Ken Myers has developed with
assistance from UMC student Kelly Nelson. It uses Microsoft Access
technology to help solve a restaurant’s cost control challenges. PRM
was designed to be quickly understood and put into practice by the
computer novice, but powerful enough to give the user the data needed to
make important decisions in managing menu prices and more.
Examples of some of
PRM’s capabilities and features:
-
Provides a searchable
recipe database holding thousands of recipes with viewable ingredients
database
-
Calculates total cost
of a recipe, cost per serving, total cost of each ingredient in a
recipe, and cost percentage of each ingredient in a particular recipe
-
Calculates the food
cost percentage for a recipe by simply entering a selling price
-
Scales a recipe to
any needed quantity
-
Provides feedback if
the user has not entered needed information in order to calculate
costing data or nutrition data
-
Calculates nutrition
Information for twelve items, giving the total for the recipe as well
as the total per serving of the following (calories, protein,
carbohydrates, fat, saturated fat, cholesterol, sodium, fiber,
calcium, iron, vitamin A, vitamin C)
