Bachelor of Manufacturing Management Approval in Metro Area
We received notification that
UMC's request for approval to offer the Bachelor of Manufacturing
Management degree in the Twin Cities metropolitan area has been
approved by the Higher Learning Commission's Institutional Actions
Council. The degree is offered in partnerships with technical and
community colleges in the Twin Cities and is focused primarily on
serving individuals in the workforce. We have been offering courses
related to the program in the Twin Cities for about two years. Our
Congratulations to Christo Robberts, Shelley Diment, Jane Sims, Robert
Smith, and Doug Knowlton, who all helped create this off-site degree
program.

Named Higher Learning Commission Self Study Coordinator
UMC
is scheduled for a comprehensive evaluation for continued accreditation
during the 2004-2005 academic year. We have proposed to the Commission
that the campus visit be in April 2005. Effective January 1, 2005, the
Commission will require colleges to use its new criteria and
accreditation program. In preparation for the continued
accreditation, Dr. Jennifer Wilson has agreed to accept the Self
Study Coordinator role for UMC. She presently serves as a consultant
evaluator for the Commission and has college and program accreditation
experience. She now has a dual role, as she continues to serve
as Program Director for Health Sciences. Dr. Knowlton, Dr. Wilson, and
I plan to attend the Higher Learning Commission Annual Meeting April
13-16 this year and to participate in workshops related to continued
accreditation.

Faculty
In-Service Sessions Scheduled for
February 21
Friday, February 21, 2003, has
been scheduled as a day for faculty/staff in-service. While a number of
faculty have made plans to attend the Collaboration Conference in
Minneapolis, we will also be holding in-service activities here on
campus for all faculty members who will not be at that meeting. Below
is a list of activities that have been scheduled. Other activities may
be scheduled for the afternoon.

This session will highlight the use of portfolio and other
online resources for advising as well as present some of the best
practices information that is available regarding the role of advising
in student success. The session will be held in the new technology room
on the second floor of the library and will include a continental
breakfast.

Human Resource Development, will present two excellent professional
development opportunities on the UMC campus this Friday, February 21.

Fish
Sticks—Keeping the Vision Alive
9 to 11 a.m., Brown Dining Room A&B
This is a follow-up to the Fish training session offered at UMC
in the fall of 2002. It looks at the Pike Place Fish Market approach to
coping with peak business times, employee turnover and market
competition. Through video and discussion, participants will 1) define
"vision", 2) learn how management and employees view the service
philosophy and its importance and 3) explore elements used to
communicate/support the vision.
Setting Service
Standards
Noon to 4:15 p.m., Brown Dining Room A&B
The University strives to continually improve and enhance the
delivery of great service. Meeting this goal requires establishing a
service philosophy along with service standards that guide service
interactions and illustrate the University’s ongoing commitment to
delivering great service. Participants attending this class will
identify a service philosophy, construct service standards based upon
the philosophy, and consider methodologies to measure standards
including what tools to use and how you know when the standards have
been achieved.

education and academic research; how does a university nurture a sense
of academic community that goes beyond specific disciplines; how does a
university balance its land-grant covenant with the state and its
responsibility to address global issues; and how do technology changes
affect a university? National Public Radio commentator Juan Williams

Thanks
from Football Staff
On behalf of the UMC Football
Staff, I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of the people
who have helped us with the recruiting process over the past two
months. We are not done recruiting by any means, but we are off to a
great start in signing these young men to a national letter of intent.
Our recruiting weekends have been a huge success once again. These
weekends are not possible without the help of the UMC Faculty and
Staff. Thank you to everyone involved!

Upcoming
Event for Women’s History Month
I want to take this opportunity
to alert several of you to an opportunity coming up soon on our campus.
As a part of the recognition of March as Women’s History Month, we are
going to be bringing Heidi Heitkamp, the former Attorney General for the
State of North Dakota to our campus to speak on the evening of Tuesday,
March 18. We are bringing in Heidi because she is an accomplished,
respected and dynamic person who has done some pretty amazing things in
her life to date, and is likely to do more. Not only was she elected to
demanding and at times controversial public service positions at a young
age, but she has also battled cancer in the midst of a gubernatorial
campaign. Heidi has been a champion of consumer rights, juvenile
justice, anti-drug campaigns, the environment and much, much more.
She is an excellent
role model for both men and women of all ages, and she will be speaking
on the topic of “Lessons I Have Learned.” We hope to be assisted with
the evening’s events by the UMC SIFE Club and the UMC Ambassadors. We
would eagerly welcome other student group sponsors and assistants as
well since there are multiple events being planned for this day and this
visit.
If you have a class or
a club or a group that is in search of a public campus event to
participate in, please mark this date on your calendar. We will also be
hosting staff and student guests from the U of M Women’s Center on that
day, so the opportunity for networking with representatives from another
campus is available as well. Watch for more times, dates and info
related to this event.

Health
Insurance Portability and Accountability Act Training Update
Provisions of a new federal law
will require training for nearly all University employees. The Health
Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) is a new federal
law that, among other things, sets privacy standards for individuals'
health information. HIPAA has a large impact on the University of
Minnesota community because we educate health professionals, social
workers, and psychologists; we provide health care and provide support
for caregivers; and we carry out research using individuals' health
information. We have been advised that our status as a health-care
provider introduces risks and obligations under HIPAA beyond those of
other institutions of higher education.
In order to comply with
HIPAA, our University community has the obligation to ensure that, by
April 14, 2003, everyone who has access to individuals' health
information has been trained in how to properly protect that information
from disclosure or unauthorized use. The required training for each
person depends on his or her role at the University: academic advisors
and student service personnel need less detailed HIPAA training than do
clinical researchers. Those who need training will receive an e-mail
message from their unit's privacy coordinator.
Training is available
online through portals. Those in the Academic Health Center will access
HIPAA training through <www.myAHC.umn.edu>.
Others in the University community will access training through <www.myU.umn.edu>.
Ensuring that the
process works smoothly will require that everyone who receives e-mail
notification of HIPAA training requirements complete training as soon as
possible. We are confident that everyone will complete training by the
required deadline. This is a serious obligation of the University and
its employees imposed by federal law. Members of the University
community who do not complete training on time place the University at
risk and will be subject to appropriate University disciplinary
procedures.
For details about HIPAA,
the training program, or who has been designated as your privacy
coordinator, see the website, privacysecurity.umn.edu, e-mail
privacy@umn.edu, or call 612-624-7447. We thank you in advance for
your cooperation in helping the University meet this deadline during a
particularly stressful time in the University's calendar.
--Christine Maziar, Executive Vice President and Provost, and Frank
B. Cerra, M.D., Senior Vice President for Health Sciences
