Campus Parking and Snow Removal
Notice to all who are parking at UMC:  Please remember the mall signage reads "No Parking from 1 a.m. to 7 a.m." Please do not park around the mall before 7 a.m.

For those who leave vehicles overnight, there are designated areas in the lots for this.  A lot area is the far east lane, G lot area is toward the south end of the lot, and K lot area is east of the equine arena.  These areas have signs designating overnight parking.

Also the area along the sidewalk just southeast of the gym has curbing painted yellow plus signage alerting no parking.  Parking in these areas makes snow removal from sidewalks and lots difficult.  Remember if your vehicle is hit in a "No Parking" area, you are liable.  Please do not park in front of sidewalks and their crosswalks.  Remember, violators are subject to ticketing.

UROP Application Dates and Information
UROP logoApplication material for Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program intersession projects from May 19 to June 30, 2003 or regular year projects from June 23, 2003 through June 15, 2004 is now available in the Academic Affairs Office.  The maximum award is $1,700 – stipend up to $1,400 (hourly rate is $10.84) and expense allowance up to $300.  Completed applications should be returned to the Academic Affairs Office by 4:30 p.m. on March 3, 2003.  Late applications will not be accepted.  UROP offers financial awards to undergraduate students for research, scholarly, or creative projects undertaken in partnership with a faculty member.

UROP affords undergraduates the unique educational experience of collaborating with a faculty member on the design and implementation of a project.  At the same time, faculty have the opportunity to work closely with students and receive valuable assistance with their own research or professional activity.  UROP encourages students to conduct research and pursue academic interests outside of their regular courses by employing them to work on special projects.  UROP applications are judged on the quality of the proposed project and the educational benefit to the student.  Copies of UROP proposals submitted by UMC students that have been funded are on reserve in the library.

University Fire Inspector Asks For Changes
The University of Minnesota Fire Inspector, David Stringfield, toured our campus near the end of fall semester.  The purpose of his visit was to provide a fire and life safety inspection of all University buildings.  He presented Chancellor Sargeant with a follow-up report stating changes we need to complete to bring us in compliance with the Uniform Fire Code.  Some changes will be subtle, while others will be more visible due to changes in building layout or design.  The more extensive changes required will have a dramatic impact on our Facilities Management operations budget.

In some instances we may not have certain amenities where they have been in the past.  Some areas we have “always” used for storage will no longer be allowed.  One of the first things you will notice will take place in Dowell Hall.  The beverage and snack machines must be removed from the first floor locations because our stairwells are not fully enclosed “stair towers.”  One of each beverage machine and a snack dispenser will be placed in Room 100 where the temporary student lounge will move to during the Student Center construction.  The recycling containers on all the stairwell landings must be moved to the hallways inside the fire doors.

Individual departments or programs affected by the fire inspectors report will be notified Facilities Management or Environmental Health and Safety of any compliance issues they may need to attend to.
--Tom Feiro, Senior EHS Technician, Environmental Health and Safety

Ask EHS:  Fire Safety

What should I do if I discover a fire or see smoke in a building?

  • Do not panic.  Alert anyone in immediate danger.
  • Confine the fire by closing doors around it.
  • If the alarm has not been activated, pull the nearest alarm box.  They are usually located near an exit.
  • Evacuate the building by way of the nearest safe exit or into the next building separated by fire doors.
  • Even though our building fire alarm systems are monitored 24:7 by Simplex, it is good procedure to have someone dial 9-911 from the nearest safe telephone to insure the fire department has been alerted.  You can also tell dispatch any pertinent information you have i.e.) smoke or fire is visible, location in a building, is anyone injured or trapped.

Should I try to put a fire out?

Only if it is small and you have been trained to use a fire extinguisher.  Your safety is more important than a building or its contents.  The fire department should still be notified to investigate and check scene of the fire.

Why do only certain alarms go off in Kiehle, the Library and Dowell?

With the renovation of Kiehle, the new student technology center on the second floor of the library was added as part of the Kiehle project.  It is on the Kiehle fire alarm system.  When the fire alarm goes off in Kiehle, the horns, strobes and fire doors in the technology center are activated.  Those in the original library do not activate.

The fire alarms in the library are controlled by the fire alarm panel in Dowell.  So when an alarm sounds in the library, the fire doors in Dowell close to protect fire spread and smoke penetration through the link.  The strobes in Dowell will also flash.  The alarms in Dowell will not sound unless a smoke detector or pull station is activated in Dowell.

If you have questions pertaining to campus environmental health and safety, please forward them to me at ext. 8300 or tfeiro@mail.crk.umn.edu .  Your questions will be researched and shared with the campus community so we can all learn together.
--Tom Feiro, Senior EHS Technician, Environmental Health and Safety

State Director of Natural Resources Conservation Service Meets with UMC Students
William Hunt, State Conservationist with the federal Natural Resources Conservation Service, visited the campus on Friday, February 7, and met with students who are currently in the Student Career Employee Program (SCEP) and others who have recently applied.  Under this program, students work summer internships with the agency at different field offices and then upon graduation become permanent employees.  Pictured below are (from left) Jeremy Nguyen, Dan Beitzel, Clayton Schmitz, Jaime Schaunaman, William Hunt (standing), Cheryl Isder, Dan Weber, and Meghan Ulrich. Students with William Hunt

The Natural Resources Conservation Service provides technical assistance to private landowners on matters involving soil and water conservation practices as well as a number of wildlife habitat programs.  The Natural Resources program at UMC is a major supplier of personnel who go on to work with the NRCS and Soil and Water Conservation Districts.  “We have enjoyed a very productive relationship with the program here at Crookston and look forward to future progress as well,” noted Hunt.

Not only does UMC provide a pool of applicants for NRCS positions but, in conjunction with the Northwest Research and Outreach Center, offers in-service training for agency staff.  Training workshops in prescribed burning and wetland plant identification have been offered in the past, and a special session in wetland plant identification as an aid to delineation is slated for the summer of 2003.

At present UMC students Dan Weber, Jamie Schaunaman, Meghan Ulrich, and Cheryl Isder are in the Minnesota program, and Draper Lundquist and Dustin Brodina are working with North Dakota.  Most UMC students who aspire to work in land and water management are majoring in either Water Resource Management or Natural Resources Management.  Both programs integrate land use practices and agriculture with natural resources courses.

The UMC Bookstore is moving while the new student center project takes place.  The bookstore will be closed Thursday and Friday, February 20-21, for the move and will re-open in Robertson Hall 109 at 8 a.m. Monday February 24.

The Bookstore will hold an inventory reduction clothing sale February 24-28 as there is 40 percent less space in our new Robertson Hall location.
