Nature Northwest Secures Additional Grant
The UMC-based Nature Northwest Project has been awarded a $30,450 grant from the Northwest Minnesota Foundation.  The Foundation was interested in funding a number of enhancements to the original project.   Dave Arscott, Research Assistant Professor of Water Resources, and John Loegering, Assistant Professor of Wildlife Ecology, worked together to develop and submit the grant proposal.

The purpose of the proposal was to request funding to support portions of the project that were not anticipated at the outset of the project.  As the project has developed, additional funding needs have arisen including:  (1) a need for more extensive site visits to collect descriptive information, to verify accuracy and completeness of the natural resources inventory (sourcebook), and to collect additional geographic information and allow for the creation of new digital maps using global positioning systems (GPS); (2) employment of a professional photographer for publication-grade photographs; and (3) creation of a user-friendly web-based data entry and search interface that will be linked to a geographic information system (GIS).

In addition to funding these three additional needs for the project, the grant will permit a collaboration between the two Frank W. Veden Fellows:  Loegering and David DeMuth, Assistant Professor of Physics and Math.  A portion of this grant enhancement will draw upon DeMuth's expertise in web-based database development.

“I am tickled that we were able to fund these enhancements,” says Loegering.  “This will make the end products much more useable by the northwest Minnesota community.”

For more information about the Nature Northwest Projects, visit <www.nature-northwest.org>.

RSVP Commended After Monitoring Visit
The Corporation for National Service conducted a monitoring visit of the UMC sponsored Retired and Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) November 20 and 21, 2002.  The summary of the visit indicated that the program is managed according to requirements, engages a substantial number of eligible older citizens in productive community volunteer assignments, and is supported well by the sponsor.  Deanna Patenaude, the RSVP director, is commended for her stewardship of this program.  According to the summary, this program is clearly having a positive impact in northwestern Minnesota.  Proactively recruiting “younger” seniors is urged.

Football Recruiting Weekends
Recruiting season is upon us once again.  During the next month, we will be inviting approximately 100 prospective student-athletes to campus.  The football staff will be contacting faculty individually to be available and visit with these prospective students-athletes about UMC's academic programs.  Faculty members who assist will receive a meal as compensation for their time and effort.

Recruiting weekends will be held on the following dates:Golden Eagle Logo

  • January 11

  • January 18

  • January 25

  • February 1

Thank you for your support and have a Happy New Year.
--Mark Dufner, Assistant Football Coach

The U of M Legislative Network invites you to the 2003 Legislative Briefing and Reception
The 2003 Legislative Briefing and Reception will be held from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m., Tuesday, January 21, 2003 in Memorial Hall of the McNamara Alumni Center, 200 Oak Street SE, Minneapolis.

University President Robert Bruininks and UMAA President Deborah Hopp will be there to provide their insiders’ preview and to discuss the University’s 2004-05 biennial budget proposal to the Minnesota Legislature.  Sponsored by the University of Minnesota Alumni Association (UMAA), this event is an opportunity for alumni, students, faculty, staff, donors, and friends to learn about the University’s proposed partnership with the state of Minnesota and why you, as an advocate, can do to support the U.

The University is committed to the people and the future of the state.  Its promise, as Minnesota’s most comprehensive public educational institution and only research university, is to deliver a great U of M that touches the lives of all Minnesotans through its three-part mission of teaching, research, and public service.

Hold your place at the 2003 Legislative Briefing by sending you name, address, city/state/zip, phone and e-mail by January 16 via phone 612-625-9174, fax 612-636-8167, e-mail h-thil@tc.umn.edu, or on-line www.alumni.umn.edu/legnetwork.  For more information about the biennial budget request, visit www.umn.edu/govrel.

A Note from the Privacy & Security Project at the U
Health care professionals always have been obligated to respect patient privacy.  In Minnesota, state law requires that patient privacy be protected.  Now a new federal law, the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), establishes strict federal privacy standards--and legal consequences for releasing protected health information.  Because of the University of Minnesota’s computer networks, this new law has implications for every student, staff, and faculty member.

HIPAA regulations protect health information that could uniquely identify an individual.  A person who has seen a health-care professional, been treated by one, or paid for health services typically creates a record--whether it is spoken, on paper, or electronic.  That is Protected Health Information under HIPAA, whether the information is created or received by a health care provider, public health authority, business associate, employer, school, or university.

In general, those who have access to Protected Health Information may release only the minimum information necessary for the intended purpose.

HIPAA’s privacy regulations start to be enforced April 14, 2003.  That’s when a release of Protected Health Information may result in criminal or civil legal actions against the University or against individuals.

Prior to the deadline of April 14, 2003, every University of Minnesota student, faculty member, researcher, and staff person who potentially has access to others’ Protected Health Information will complete one or more online training courses about privacy and data security.

Each department or academic unit that creates or encounters protected health information has a designated privacy coordinator.  In the next few months, watch for e-mail messages from your privacy coordinators about HIPAA training needs and deadlines to complete the training.  The e-mail messages will direct you to the appropriate Web site for training.

In addition, everyone at the University of Minnesota needs to ensure the security and confidentiality of data on computer networks, which could be threatened by hackers or others attempting to access private information. A series of brochures about these topics are being published for everyone at the University to read and refer to. Another resource is online at  www.umn.edu/oit/security.

VolunTEAM Update
VolunTEAM Logo
This week’s featured Crookston VolunTEAM project is delivering Meals on Wheels in Crookston.  UMC has committed to delivering the meals during the week of January 13-17, 2003.  It’s a rewarding experience that’s more fun if you deliver them with a friend.  It involves picking up the hot and cold coolers at Riverview Hospital at 11:30 a.m. and then delivering them to the addresses marked on the map.  Depending on how much you chat with the meal recipients, it can take anywhere from 25 minutes to an hour to deliver the meals and return the coolers to Riverview.  During UMC’s week, we need six drivers per day

THIS IS AN URGENT NEED!  With all the holiday hustle and bustle and studying for finals, sign-up was understandably slow in December. But now we only have a few days to fill in numerous delivery slots.  Please help!

If you’re interested in helping out, or simply want to know more about the project, please contact Mike Christopherson in the Crookston VolunTEAM office (Bede 106) at 281-8526, email Mike at chris282@umcrookston.edu, or simply sign up at the Bede Info Desk.  If you’re interested in learning more about the Crookston VolunTEAM, please visit www.volunteam.org.

Special Dates
Reminder:  Faculty and staff are encouraged to share well wishes for birthdays, anniversaries, births, etc. with the rest of the campus.  Please send items for this week’s special dates via e-mail to Andrew Svec at asvec@mail.crk.umn.edu and/or Sue Dwyer at sdwyer@mail.crk.umn.edu. Thanks.
