World AIDS Day, December 1
This Saturday, December 1, marks
the 14th year that World AIDS Day will be observed. This year the US
World AIDS Day Advisory Committee has chosen the theme, I Care...Do
You? Youth and AIDS in the 21st Century, reflecting the reality that
HIV is reaching younger people here in the United States and around the
world. Now more than ever we need to continue to gear our HIV/AIDS
preventative programming efforts toward our youth, especially
considering the following statistics:
-
Every minute, five young people are
infected with HIV.
-
Ten million people ages 15-24 are living
with HIV/AIDS.
-
Young people under age 25 represent half
of all new HIV infection cases.
Once
again, the American Association for World Health has furnished us with a
World AIDS Day packet that contains a wide variety of the most recent
information about HIV/AIDS - some of which includes the Economic Impact
of AIDS, Statistical information on HIV/AIDS in the United States and
around the world, along with a wide variety of Fact Sheets that contain
information on HIV testing, treatment, counseling, legal implications,
and prevention, to name a few.
We sincerely hope that you will consider
incorporating these informational packets into your classroom. Please
contact either Laurie Wilson, Office for Students with Disabilities, or
Stacey Grunewald, Student Health, with the number of packets you would
like and the course they are needed for. The packets will be ready by
Friday, November 30, and delivered to your office. In keeping with this
year’s theme, Thank You for Caring.
More information about World AIDS Day can be
obtained from the following site:

Readers
Theatre December 5
“Will You Remember…?” is
the name of a Readers Theatre about a rural farm family affected by
HIV/AIDS. This is based on a true story so generously and touchingly
shared by the author, Elizabeth Traxler, as a way to reach out to
others. The event will take place Wednesday, December 5, at 6:30 p.m.
in the Bede Ballroom. Following the performance Elizabeth Traxler,
whose brother died of AIDS and Russ Lovaasen, who is living with AIDS
will share their personal stories with the audience.
This event is free and
open to the public with refreshments available. Undergraduate
Continuing Education Certificates will be offered to students who
attend. This is being sponsored by Rural AIDS Action Network, Polk
County Public Health, and UMC.

Holiday Penny
Drive
It's time once again to start
reaching into the bottoms of your coat pockets, purses, backpacks and
desk drawers for that loose and lost change. Gather it up and put it to
work and good use at a local charity. The UMC Student Ambassadors will
be sponsoring the 5th Annual Holiday Penny Drive from December 10-14.
One hundred percent of proceeds go to benefit a local cause.
Ambassadors will be set up to receive donations in the SCC entrance.
Over the past years, the UMC Campus Community has donated amounts
ranging from $144.00 to $376.00 during the Penny Drives.

Benefits of “Wired” Campuses
For colleges, does being “wired”
to the Internet really matter? The Education Policy Analysis Archives (EPAA),
a peer-reviewed scholarly journal, recently published Volume 9 Number 49
"Computing Experience and Good Practices in Undergraduate Education:
Does the Degree of Campus ‘Wiredness’ Matter?" by Shouping Hu and George
Kuh.
Briefly, the article discusses survey
results from 18,844 students at 71 colleges and universities to
determine if the presence of computing and information technology
influenced the frequency of use of various forms of technology and other
educational resources and the exposure to good educational practices.
Students attending Yahoo! Internet Life’s “most wired colleges”
were found to more frequently have used computing and information
technology and reported higher levels of engagement in good educational
practices than their counterparts at less wired institutions. The
article is available at
http://epaa.asu.edu/epaa/v9n49.html.

bringing this article to our attention.

Crookston may submit up to three nominations for the Horace T.

current Outstanding Teacher Award committee. The following individuals
currently sit on the committee:
The committee is encouraging nominators to
notify the chair of their intention to develop a dossier and submit a
nomination from the campus. Early in Dec the Committee plans to hold a
meeting to discuss criteria and to provide insight into the selection
process. The Committee will also review dossiers and serve as a review
and critique committee to aid in the development of the dossiers.

Committee is asking that a preliminary portfolio be submitted to them by
a deadline of January 9, 2002. Final deadline for submission to the
