Dean’s List Breakfast October 17
UMC faculty and staff are invited to stop in at the Dean's List Breakfast anytime between 8:30-9:30 a.m., Wednesday, October 17, in Brown Dining Room.  This is a new tradition, started last spring, to be held before each Convocation.  Invitations have been sent to all the students who were named to the Dean's List or the Chancellor's List for last spring semester.  This is a wonderful opportunity to congratulate the students who have worked hard to achieve at this level.
--Doug Knowlton, Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs

Convocation October 17
All students, faculty, and staff are encouraged to attend Fall Semester Convocation on October 17, 10 to 11 a.m., in Bede Ballroom.  Classes will not be held during this hour.  Guest speaker is Jeannine Windels, CEO of the Crookston Chamber of Commerce.  Recognition of student academic achievement for spring semester will be made; captains of fall athletic teams will address the student body; and announcements of various student activities will take place.

What Does the Operating Levy Referendum for the Crookston Public Schools Mean for You?
Find out Friday, October 19, from 12 noon to 1 p.m. in Brown Dining Room A&B, when Crookston Superintendent Ralph Christofferson will present the issue and answer any questions you may have.  You can also learn how you can help support the process of informing the general public.  All faculty, students, and staff are welcome to attend.  Dining Services will be open, and the special of the day will be a lemon pepper chicken salad in a bread bowl.

Spring Textbook Orders Due October 25
Spring 2002 textbook order forms have been distributed to the Centers.  The forms are due back to the UMC Bookstore Thursday, October 25, 2001.  Thanks for your assistance.

Grade Distribution and Notification Confidentiality
As mid-terms approach, it is important for faculty and staff to keep in mind that posting of grades by any identifiable information (e.g., student identification number, last name) is prohibited by the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA).

To ensure confidentiality but still allow grades to be posted, instructors are advised to establish a unique code known only to the student and instructor. Grade lists should not be listed alphabetically.

Also, faculty need to be aware that distributing graded papers or exams en masse, such as in the hallway or in a box on a table, without checking for proper identification is a violation of FERPA. Graded papers and exams can be mailed to students in pre-addressed campus mail envelopes or pre-stamped and addressed U.S. mail envelopes. Also, if space and personnel allow, student can pick up their exams or papers from a department member who is responsible for checking the student's identification.

For more information about FERPA contact Tina Falkner at ROVIC001@sossgw.stu.umn.edu or 612-625-1064.

-- The Record, October 2001, Office of the Executive Vice President and Provost, University of Minnesota, Twin Cities

Golden Eagles LogoAudio Streaming of Athletic Events
If you are unable to attend football (or basketball) games and would still like to listen to your favorite team, the UMC Golden Eagles, UMC in conjunction with KROX AM radio is streaming audio for all football games and selected men's and women's basketball games (a schedule of basketball streamed games is yet to be determined).

In order to do this, you will need a computer to listen to the live webcast.  Simply follow the instructions as shown below and you should be able to listen to the game from anywhere in the world with a networked computer.  Students, please let your parents and family members know that this service is available.

If you have any questions, please feel free to call me for more information.  Instructions to pull up the web cast are shown below.

Go to the UMC Athletics Web Site www.umcrookston.edu/people/athletics and click on:Audio Stream of Games.”  This will take you to the “Audio Streaming of UMC Athletic Events” page.

Then click on “Listen to Live Webcast of Current Event.”  This should connect you to the game live as it happens (if it is being broadcast over KROX AM radio).  Good luck and thanks for your continued support!
