Choose to Care
2002 United Way Campaign Gets Underway
The Annual United Way Campaign
Kick-off at UMC is scheduled for October 15 and will run through October
29. A big thank you goes out to Anne Burke, Dennis Magsam, and Cindy
Tyler who have once again volunteered to serve as Division Leaders for
our campus. This year’s theme is “Choose to Care,” and we hope that
every UMC faculty and staff person will consider a pledge to the local
United Way that serves 34 agencies and programs in our area. Many of
these programs such as Hospice, American Cancer Society, Senior
Nutrition Programs, RHA Cardiac Rehab, and North Country Food Bank serve
people from a wide area. Please watch for your United Way envelope next
week and consider making a pledge.
For those of you who
are chili lovers, the 2nd Annual United Way Chili Cook-off is
scheduled for Thursday, October 18, at the Legion. Tickets are $4.00 in
advance from Bruuns for Men, Eagle Drug, the Legion, The Real Estate
Place, and the United Way Office. Take some time to enjoy a great
community evening and contribute to an important area project as well.
--Laurie Wilson, Joy Johnson, and Judy Rud, 2002 Campaign Chairs

CAUTION: 15
Passenger Van Users
Facts:
The University finds that the roll-over rate is three times as great when you have 15 passenger vans with 10 or more occupants than those lightly loaded.
Wearing seatbelts prevents serious injuries and saves live. Everyone should wear them.
On long trips there should always be a co-pilot whose job it is to ensure that the driver is alert.
Lesson:
Arrive alive!!!

ITC Workshop Suggestions
After the hustle and bustle of
the first five weeks of classes, I think we now have some time to think
about some training needs. I know several faculty have had problems
with mail merge. We will definitely have a few sessions on mail merge
(Office 2000 and Office XP versions). It would help us to plan the ITC
fall workshops more effectively if you can help me with the following
two questions:
What days and times would be most convenient for you?
Which of the following areas would interest you this Fall?
Mail Merge
Excel Grade Book & Formulas
Basic Office XP (Word, PowerPoint, & Outlook) - Top 10 Features
FrontPage
Access Database
WebCT - Getting started
WebCT - Refresher
WebCT - Quizzing
WebCT - Discussion & Assignment Tools
WebCT - Online Grade Book & Student Tracking
WebCT - Class Surveys
PaintShop Pro 7
PhotoShop 6
Flash Animation (Creating Flash Intros for Websites)
Flash Games
Toolbook Interactives (Create Interactive Practice or Reviews)

Others
Feel free to suggest other areas. I look
forward to receiving your suggestions (including days and times).

Travel Grants for Students
Ten students participated in a
study abroad trip in Europe in March, 2001. The group was led by two
UMC faculty members. Upon return, students and faculty members gave a
public presentation of the experiences at the annual international
dinner program.
The Office of Multicultural and International Programs provided travel grants to these students. Also, facilitated health insurance coverage and assisted students with pre-departure information and orientation.
Currently, the office
has 3 travel grants for students interested in study abroad experiences.
For more information please, visit the office located in 133A Bede Hall.

Open Enrollment 2001
As you are aware, the
University's open enrollment period is October 16 to November 15. This
is your once-a-year opportunity to make changes to many of your
benefits. Within the next week or two, you will be receiving an Open
Enrollment Packet with your Guide to Benefits Enrollment and Application
for Coverage form.
It would be a good idea to take a few minutes now to check your address on PeopleSoft through the web to make sure it's correct. You can update your personal information at the following web page: https://www.umn.edu/login/onestop.umn.edu/personalprofile/decisionPoints.shtml. If your address is correct and you still haven't received your packet by October 20th you should call Employee Benefits at (800) 756-2363 or (612) 624-9090.
Your Application for Coverage must be received by 4:30 p.m. on Thursday, November 15, 2001. Your changes submitted by U.S. Mail will also be accepted provided the envelope is postmarked not later than November 15, 2001. Changes in coverage and new premium contributions will be effective December 31, 2001.
Below are a few web sites that you may find helpful when deciding which options are best for you and your family.
