Master Plan Round Two
Information from the master planning presentation on August 23 is now available online at <www.umcrookston.edu/campusinfo/masterplan/MP-2001.htm>.  “Round Two” was presented by Joseph R. Favour and David Motzenbecker of Oslund and Associates.  Interested faculty and staff are encouraged to provide feedback via the e-mail links on that website.

Use of the Crookston Community Pool
Each year UMC has signed a contract to use the Crookston Community Pool.  The contract has been for general student use as well as for certain UMC classes.  The student activity fee has covered a portion of the contract cost and this provides all UMC students with free access to the pool.

This year the contract provides for free access to all faculty and staff as well as students.  We must show our University ID card in order to use the pool under this agreement.  Faculty, staff and students can use the pool at no cost for the following sessions:

  • Morning lap swim

  • Morning aqua exercises (does not cover evening class)

  • All open swim times

Here is the web link to the pool:  http://crookston.net/

Crookston has an excellent pool facility and I encourage you to use it.  Let me know if you have questions.

Access to Student Records
The Regents' Policy on Access to Student Records is summarized at <www.umcrookston.edu/campusinfo/policies/access.htm> and is listed in its entirety at: <http://www1.umn.edu/regents/policies/administrative/StudentRecords.pdf>. As employees of the University of Minnesota you may access student records or other official U of M business records only as required to perform your assigned duties. You may update your own record only through the "Update Personal Information" link on the Human Resources webpage at: <www.umcrookston.edu/people/HR/index.htm>.
Violations of the Regents' Policy on Access to Student Records may constitute grounds for rescinding access to records or imposing disciplinary action, up to and including dismissal. Violations include the following offenses and any other comparable action:

  • releasing (outside the University) public information about students requested on the basis of non-public information (e.g., names of all international students, names of all students with a GPA lower than 2.0);
  • altering a student record without appropriate supporting documentation/authorization, regardless of whether you benefit from this alteration;
  • accessing a student record or other official U of MN business record outside of your assigned duties;
  • releasing suppressed or private information without authorization;
  • publicly discussing a student record in any way that might personally identify that student.

For additional information please contact me at 7A Hill Hall, 281-8560.

eFAAN goes live -- a Web-based Financial Aid System
A new application, developed by the Web Development team in conjunction with the Office of Student Finance (OSF), allows University students for the first time to respond to their financial aid award notices (FAANs) via the Web. It is anticipated that the new system, called the eFAAN, will greatly reduce the processing burden on OSF staff and streamline the awarding, acceptance and disbursement of financial aid to approximately 30,000 students across all four University campuses.

The eFAAN replaces a paper- and "snail mail"-based process, and as an added benefit will reduce the amount of paper used by OSF this year by approximately 1 million sheets!

An outgrowth of the Web registration system, the eFAAN was developed over a 12-month period, culminating in its release on July 16, just before students are awarded aid and begin to accept their awards for the upcoming academic year. During late July and early August each year, students will be notified via email that they have been awarded aid; a link in the e-mail will direct students to the eFAAN, from which students can accept, decline, or in some cases reduce, the offered awards.

The ability to accept aid online is particularly timely this year, given the legislature's late decision on funding for the University. OSF must be ready to disburse aid to students when the fall term begins.

The eFAAN has already received much attention, both within the University community and among the general public. Richard Pfutzenreuter, Associate Vice President in the Office of Budget and Finance, cited the eFAAN in a recent StarTribune article as an example of how the University continues to improve service to students despite cuts in state funding.

Earlier this year, a reception showcasing the eFAAN and the University's other Web capabilities was hosted by Nancy Sinsabaugh, Interim Director for the Office of Student Finance, and was attended by numerous state legislators and U. S. Department of Education officials. Look for further publicity (positive publicity, we hope!) as students return to campus and experience the eFAAN for themselves.

Questions regarding the eFAAN can be directed to Bruce Stone, project manager for Web Development, at 612-625-6402 or stone063@umn.edu
