Maziar Appointed U of M Executive VP and Provost
Christine MaziarAfter an extensive national search, we are delighted to announce that Christine Maziar has accepted the position of executive vice president and provost for the University of Minnesota, effective July 15, pending approval by the Board of Regents.

Christine brings outstanding academic and administrative experience, deep support among both internal and external communities, and a record of accomplishment as dean of the Graduate School and vice president for Research.

During her tenure at the University, Christine has overseen the implementation of a new, nationally recognized grants management system, strengthened graduate programs, developed strong relationships with the external community, and championed a record level of research funding for the University.  She has a deep commitment to our students and to advancing the academic mission of the University.  We are confident that under her leadership the University will continue to improve its academic programs and build on the initiatives we've undertaken.  Read More.

We wish to publicly thank the search committee for its diligent work.
--Mark G. Yudof, President, & Robert Bruininks, Interim President Designate

Oliver to Take on Development Role, Stassen Appointed Head Football Coach
Stassen and OliverCurrent head football coach Scott Oliver will take on a new role at UMC effective July 28, 2002, when he will resign as head football coach and will be appointed as an associate development officer with responsibilities of fundraising for UMC athletics.  Shannon Stassen, currently assistant football coach and offense coordinator, will serve as the head football coach for the 2002 season.

According to UMC officials, the change will be “budget neutral,” meaning no new funding will be used.  “There is precedent to adjusting staff assignments and responsibilities,” said Chancellor Don Sargeant,  “and the simple truth is that in order to be viable and competitive in Division II athletics, we need to reorganize our resources to meet those needs and to improve efficiency.  We needed to find a creative way to move forward with athletic fundraising, and I think we have.”

The appointment will be for one year, renewable, and the major goal of the change will be to bring the amount raised for UMC athletic scholarships from $170,000 to $250,000 per year.  Sargeant said, “The UMC Golden Eagles Football Team has improved each year.  Scott has obviously been successful there, and I’m confident he will continue his success in the arena of development for all our athletic programs.”

Oliver will also maintain some direct ties to UMC’s coaching staff.  He will serve as assistant hockey coach, working with head hockey coach Gary Warren. Read More.

On-line Pay Statements
A reminder that the University is moving to on-line pay statements beginning in July.  For those employees who receive their salary through direct deposit, the printed pay statements will no longer be mailed to UMC for distribution.  Employees will be responsible for viewing and/or printing their own pay statements. The instructions below provide more details for your review.  I encourage you to try viewing your last pay statement on-line right now to see how easy and convenient this new service is (see link below).  If you do not have an X.500 username and password set up, give the helpdesk a call (281-8000) and they can assist you with this. Any employees who do not have any electronic access and cannot utilize the on-line features should notify Gail Hasbrouck ASAP if they must have a printed copy of the pay statements, as we will need to arrange for these to continue to be printed and mailed to UMC.  Please let me know if you have any questions.
--Dean McCleary, Vice Chancellor for Finance

WHAT'S NEW?

Beginning with the June 12, 2002, pay date, you can access your pay statement through the Human Resources Self Service (HRSS) Web site at http://hrss.umn.edu. Effective with the above date, all pay statements for all employees will be available online. Paper direct deposit statements will be discontinued July 24 except in cases where employees do not have access to the Internet or have other reasons for receiving a printed direct deposit statement from Payroll. Employees who currently are not on direct deposit can access their pay statements online, but will continue to receive paper checks.

This exciting new application advances our goal of improving University services and processes by delivering more information online. In March, the University introduced online W-2 and W-4 applications. In addition to this information, you can also access personal information regarding retirement, personal demographics, flexible spending accounts, training history and online training registration, and vacation and sick leave accruals. The HRSS Web site also provides general information on University human resources policies, procedures, resources and much more.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION

  • Online pay statements will be available beginning with the June 12 pay date. Pay statements will be online and on paper for the following three pay days:  June 12, June 26 and July 10, to help employees become accustomed to the new service.

  • Starting July 24, employees who have direct deposit will no longer receive a paper copy unless circumstances warrant and they make arrangements with their department payroll administrators. Each department will determine how employees should communicate this to their payroll administrators.

  • The pay statements of all employees will be online whether or not they receive direct deposit or actual paychecks.

  • Employees who do not have direct deposit will continue to receive paper pay statements.

  • The same data that is on printed pay statements will be on the Online Pay Statement.  The exception is that the first two to six digits of your bank account number (depending on the length of your bank account number) will be suppressed.  This will look much like other web applications, like online banking and online use of your credit card number, that hide parts of a number when it is displayed.

BENEFITS OF THE ONLINE PAY STATEMENT

  • Pay information is delivered more securely than the current paper distribution process.

  • Employees can see their pay statement two days before payday. Please note that pay is not deposited sooner.

  • Pay statements will be stored online and available for two years (from rollout).

  • Employees can access pay statements online from remote locations.

  • Online pay statements are a more efficient, cost-effective and environmentally friendly process and an improvement to employee services. The University anticipates reductions in paper use and staff time needed in the distribution processes.

SECURITY

This method of distributing pay statements is more secure than the current paper distribution process. The current process is manually intensive, with many people handling the pay statements before they are put in employees' mailboxes, which are often located in non-secured areas. We eliminate all of this when delivering your pay statement online and we can also assure you that the online environment is secure. Our security measures are the generally accepted standards used by other organizations to secure their Web applications.

PAY INFORMATION Q & A WEB SITE

For more information about Online Pay Statements, visit the Web site at www.umn.edu/ohr/hrss to get answers to commonly asked questions, including (but not limited to) browser recommendations and logon instructions.  You will also find more detailed information about other items mentioned in this communication.  If clicking on the web site from this memo does not directly link you to the Q & A Web site, copy the URL from this paragraph, open your browser, paste the URL into the address window on your browser, and click on enter or Go.

OTHER NEW INFORMATION NOW ONLINE

The new Employee Services section is now available on the HRSS Web site. Find out about Home and Family, University Entertainment, Career Resources, Health and Wellness and New Employee Essentials. In the future, the Life Events section will allow you to browse information in a completely different way. We are adding new content to HRSS continually, so visit often.

Our goal is to provide you with easily accessible, accurate, and useful information to help you with all of your employment related questions. As you use this system, you may have ideas or suggestions for other resources that you'd like to see delivered through HRSS, and if so, I'd like to hear from you.  Please e-mail me at carrier@umn.edu .
