Looking Ahead with Chancellor Sargeant

This is a difficult note for me.  Last week I indicated to President Yudof that I would like to step down as UMC's Chancellor effective June 30, 2003; this is a position I've held since 1985.  It has been challenging and rewarding, and the fruits of all of our labors together have created a unique higher educational institution--one that is very meaningful to the students and public we serve.  We all can take pride in UMC.

I've given considerable thought to my resignation, to the future contributions I can make as an emeritus administrator and UMC faculty member, and to the personal goals Mary Beth and I have set for our future.  In 1970, I joined the Crookston faculty following graduate work that focused on the development of computer assisted instructional materials in agriculture education.  I'm convinced, that as the academic program offerings and polytechnic mission of UMC evolve, that technology based instruction is becoming ever more critical to our success, and that there is a need for expanded faculty support and training in this area.

I have asked for a one year administrative leave beginning July 1, 2003, to strengthen my skills in areas related to the development and documentation of courseware effectiveness and then to use these expanded skill sets to focus my faculty work on instructional technology, including the support of UMC faculty in the development of courseware and documentation.  In addition to normal faculty responsibilities, it is my intent to support the UMC development office staff by identifying and working with potential donors.

Mary Beth and I thank all of you for your professional and personal support over the past 32 years.  We look forward to another great year at UMC together with each of you.  Let's make it the best yet.
--Don Sargeant, Chancellor

UMC to Host All-Campus Meeting June 19-20

UMC will take its semi-annual turn at hosting the all-campus meeting of the U of M Student Administrative Services Group on Wednesday, June 19, and Thursday, June 20.  The event involves training and business meetings for admissions, financial aid, registration, records, and administrative computing services staff from all U of M campuses.

A schedule for the meeting will be posted to the UMC Today website when it is finalized.  Please welcome our colleagues to campus.

Bede Replacement Project Approved

On May 22 Governor Ventura issued his list of line-item vetoes to the capital bonding bill passed by the Minnesota Legislature.  Funding was approved for the following projects in the University of Minnesota's request:  Higher Education Asset Preservation and Renewal (HEAPR) ($35 million), Plant Growth Facilities ($17.7 million), Duluth Lab Science ($33 million), Nicholson Hall ($24 million), Bede Hall, Crookston ($7.7 million), and Classroom Improvements, system-wide ($2 million).  The total value of the approved projects for the University, including the University's debt obligation and private contributions, is $119.4 million.

Initial study and planning for the replacement of Bede Hall at UMC have already taken place. Bede Hall, the existing student center, was constructed in 1921 as a high school dining hall, dormitory, and classroom building.  Originally built to serve a small high school enrollment of 155 students, the building is inadequate to meet the various needs of the current enrollment of nearly 1,200 full-time students.

The existing 18,412 square foot, three-story building, built in 1921, will be demolished as part of the project and the new Student Services Center will be constructed on the same site.  It will be replaced with a new 37,550 square foot facility connected on one level to the existing atrium connector and on two levels to Sahlstrom Conference Center.

U of M, Twin Cities Facilities Management is currently preparing the information for this project.  The information will be sent to the State Designer Selection Board in early June, and that will begin the process of selecting the firm that will design the building.  UMC officials will appoint a campus planning committee to work with the firm this summer.

Plans call for a full schematic design to begin in September 2002.  The project will be bid in March of 2003, and construction will likely take place from May 2003 to July 2004.  The completed building will be ready for occupancy in August 2004.

Real-Time Chat Available Through Webcrossing

We have enabled the chat services in Webcrossing.  I've tested it, and it seemed to work well as a basic chat application.  This gives us another option of using a real-time chat for instructional, collaboration, or communication purposes.  Anyone can register at UMC’s Webcrossing site and participate in a specific chat room.  You can try a chat room at the UMC Discussion Area (UMC website > Technology).  We can create a chat room (private or public) for you if you need one right away.  Please e-mail me and provide me a title for the chat room.

UMC Alumni and Teambacker Golf Events

This summer the UMC Alumni Association and Teambackers will travel to selected communities across northwest Minnesota in a series of golf tournaments.  Building on last summer’s initial outings, UMC faculty, staff, coaches and alumni will again meet and greet local community members while enjoying a friendly game of golf.  According to Curt Almlie, Director of University Relations at UMC, “We treat these visits like a fundraising event, but our major concern is to have a ‘fun raising’ event that gives us the opportunity to extend out into these communities and meet the people in our region.  Using a golf outing has proven to be a great way to do this.”

The schedule of tournaments includes:

·      Friday, June 14, at the Heart of the Valley Golf Course in Ada, Minnesota
Registration at 11 a.m., start at 1 p.m.
$30 per person to register

·      Monday, June 24, at Two River Golf Course in Hallock, Minnesota
Registration at 11:30 a.m., start at 12:30 p.m.
$25 per person to register

·         Saturday, July 20, the annual Teambacker Golf Classic at Minakwa Golf Club in Crookston
Registration at 10 a.m., start at 11 a.m.
$65 per person to register

The format is a simple four-person scramble playing 18 holes, followed by a social and awards program.  Proceeds go to help fund UMC athletic scholarships.  Transportation is normally available from campus, and team formation is open.  All alumni and friends of UMC and the University of Minnesota are welcome.  If you have questions or would like to participate in any of the scheduled tournaments, please contact the UMC Office of University Relations at 218-281-8436.

Postal Rate Increase June 30, 2002

Postage rates will increase on average by 8% over all classes of mail handled by the United States Postal Service.  First class, one-ounce letters will be $.37, additional ounces first class will be $.23, postcards will be $.23, nonprofit rates will increase by approximately 8%.

Barb Oseth Retirement

After spending 500 hours on KROX Radio, driving 500,000 work-related miles (which translates into about 10,000 hours or 4.8 years of 40- hour weeks), and offering 30 years of service to the University of Minnesota Extension Service, Barb Oseth is going to turn off her mic and give her car a rest.  In other words, she is retiring!

Please join us Thursday, June 20, as we celebrate with Barb her 30 years in Extension and her retirement.  We will hold a summertime picnic in her honor from noon-1:30 p.m. at the Peterson Gazebo on the UMC campus mall (rain site: Sahlstrom Conference Center).  Please RSVP to Marlene LeBlanc (e-mail: lebla011@umn.edu, phone: 218-281-8696).

Accolades

Roger Wagner, Associate Professor of Horticulture, received the UMC Distinguished Teaching Award for 2002 at the annual faculty and staff recognition celebration, held May 16.  Wagner has a distinguished 27-year career of teaching horticulture courses at UMC.  He was cited for his service to students as an excellent teacher, advisor, and role model and for his “concern and guidance, not only about students’ academic performance and progress, but equally so in their growth as individuals and up-and-coming professionals in the field of horticulture.”   Students and colleagues asked to comment on his effectiveness as a professor consistently commented on his professionalism, his knowledge of both the science and industry of horticulture, and the high expectations he holds for his students.  He has been a faculty member at UMC since 1975.

The UMC Distinguished Professional and Administrative Award for 2002 was presented to Heidi Patterson, Associate Director of Financial Aid, at the annual faculty and staff recognition day.  The award promotes and recognizes excellence in job performance among UMC professional and administrative staff employees.  Patterson was honored, specifically, for her knowledge, student service, and professionalism within the realm of student financial aid.  She has worked in the Office of Financial Aid at UMC since the summer of 1997.

Also honored at the faculty and staff recognition day was Don Wieland, Senior Operations Engineer in the Facilities Management Department.  He received the UMC Distinguished Civil Service and Bargaining Unit Award for 2002.  Wieland, who has worked on the campus for over 40 years, was recognized for his “unsurpassed knowledge of campus building mechanics,” his willingness to work collaboratively to solve problems, and his dedication to quality work and service.

George French, Associate Professor of Music, received the Outstanding Community Service Award for 2002.  This award was first presented in 1999 to recognize the contributions UMC faculty and staff make within the larger community of Crookston and the region.  French began his career at UMC in 1980, and, in addition to his responsibilities at UMC, he has been an active member of the music and arts community since he first came to the region.  He has served numerous terms on the boards of the Crookston Community Theater and the Crookston Civic Music League.  He is the music director of Trinity Lutheran Church in Crookston and is also involved in the Red River Valley Chapter of the American Guild of Organists and the American Legion Ninth District Band.  Faculty, staff, and community members overwhelmingly agree that his personal attributes include, as one faculty member stated, “amazing versatility, remarkable talent, and boundless energy.”

Meloni RasmussenMeloni Rasmussen, Senior Administrative Specialist, has been named Employee of the Semester for Spring 2002 by the United Staff Association (USA).  Rasmussen works for the UMC Counseling and Career Center and for the UMC Student Activities and Service Learning Office.  She was cited for her dedication to her job and for her service to UMC students.  She has been employed at UMC for the past three years.

Thank You from Stanley Sahlstrom

I want to say thanks to all UMC faculty, staff, administration and the chancellor for the beautiful azalea that was sent to me while I was in the hospital.  I’m back home now, but recovery goes slowly after major surgery.  We’ll keep in touch.  Thanks, again, so much to everyone for their caring and concern.
