Space Committee Open
Forums May 8, 9, 16
An interior space planning
committee has been formed for the UMC campus and charged with the
responsibility for making recommendations to the Executive Committee
and the Chancellor regarding the future use of space that has, or will
soon become available for reassignment.
The committee has
scheduled open hearings at
3:30 p.m. in Sahlstrom Conference Center rooms A and B on Wednesday, May
8 and Thursday, May 9. A third meeting is set for
Thursday, May 16, at 2 p.m. in the same location. The purpose of the
meetings is to provide a forum for the expression of thoughts and ideas
regarding the proposals submitted to the committee for consideration.
Coffee and juice will be served.
If you plan to speak to
the proposals please let me know so that the committee has some idea as
to how much time to allot to each presenter and if you will require any
materials or AV set-up.

Assistive
Technology: Applications in Postsecondary Education
UMC has received two copies of
the video entitled Assistive Technology: Applications in Postsecondary
Education produced by the U of M Curriculum Transformation and
Disability Project. The video and companion handbook are available for
use in classes, by students developing projects, or for staff training
sessions. The video provides an overview of many of the assistive
technology applications available for students, employees and employers,
and could be especially appropriate in courses related to human
resources, ITM, and Scientific and Technical Communication.
Additionally, the video would be valuable for any faculty member to view
and for employers or employees who may benefit from assistive technology
or need to understand how it functions.
Please contact Laurie
Wilson if you wish to preview it or use it.

Opportunity
to Give – RELAY FOR LIFE
On Friday/Saturday June
14, 2002 the RELAY FOR LIFE event will be held on the UMC campus. The
American Cancer Society's Relay for Life is a unique overnight
celebration of life in honor and memory of those touched by cancer. The
funds it raises help fight the disease through ACS programs of research,
education, advocacy and service. For approximately 12 hours teams of
8-15 members will participate in walking, the campus with speeches by
cancer survivors, team laps, and the lighting of luminaries. Barb
Ricord is organizing a team and asks that anyone who is interested in
joining call her at 281 8546 or email
bricord@ngplains.org. Donations can also be given if you are unable
to join the team. Each luminary costs $5.00 and can be in memory of or
support of someone who has died from cancer or someone who has had
cancer. Barb would appreciate it if people interested in being on the
team or supporting the effort would let her know by May 10. Thank you
for considering this opportunity to give.
--Doug Knowlton, Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs

About 25 students from
UMC’s Natural Resources Program recently volunteered time over
two days to help post Wetlands Reserve Program conservation easement
boundary signs at the Glacial Ridge project, east of Crookston. The
students assisted Project Manager and NRCS District Conservationist
Raymond Reading, based in Ada, with the posting work. Students gained
experience discussing the background of the project and the use of GPS
for project boundary locations, and they observed a variety of wildlife
in what is the largest prairie/wetlands restoration project in the lower
48 states. To learn more about the Glacial Ridge Project, go to <http://midwest.fws.gov/planning/glacialtop.htm>.
Congratulations to UMC student Ryan Owens,
who was named Outstanding Resident Advisor for 2001-2002 at the recent
Residential Life Year-End Banquet. Ryan will be returning to UMC’s RA
staff next year as a senior RA in McCall Hall. At the banquet the
winners of the Andy Miller Scholarship Essay Contest were also
announced. The essay contest asks current RAs to discuss what they have
learned from being an RA over the past year. UMC Alum Andy Miller ‘82,
who served as an RA while attending UMC, sponsors the scholarship essay
contest each year. The top three essays and their respective
scholarship award for this year were: Dan Oberg--$250; Mindy
Fowler--$150; and Johan Bergholm--$100. Congratulations.
Thank You
I would like to thank everyone
for the wonderful farewell! Whether you joined us for lunch at my
favorite "China Moon" on Monday, shared some cake in our office, sent an
e-mail or card, or shared with me your kind words ... THANK YOU!
It has been so
wonderful being a part of UMC for the past 6 1/2 years. I have made
many friends here who have taught me so much about life. "Success
is measured not so much by the position that one has reached in life as
by the obstacles which he has overcome while trying to succeed."
--Booker T. Washington
You have all played an
integral part in my successes on and off campus. Wishing all
of you the best in the future. And may you be as blessed as I have been
to work with such wonderful people.
" '... God in
Heaven appoints each man's work ...' " John 3:27 TLB
