CMyU Web PortalNew Web Portal “CMyU
UMC Web Services is pleased to announce a new website, CMyU.  CMyU is a web portal through which our students, faculty, staff, alumni, prospective students, and guests may access their selective UMC web pages, services, and sources of information.

CMyU was designed as a virtual desktop—an adaptive desktop which can be customized and personalized by you.  CMyU enables you to connect quickly to and navigate this easy to use virtual desktop from any computer on the Internet.  The CMyU desktop uses a start button and menu control organized by groups, and CMyU controls to manage desktop and channels.

CMyU Channels, windows of content that may be added to this virtual desktop, are made up of web pages from the existing UMC website, from other internet sites, and special web pages for UMC services and sources of information. A channel can be created for any Internet site you choose.

Sample CMyU Channels:

  • Academic / Registration Records (check your grades, course schedule, & register for classes)
  • CMyU Messenger (send instant messages and chat with friends in real-time)
  • Class Schedule Spring Term (view a list of your classes with times and locations)
  • Dining Services Account (check the balance of your meal plan account)
  • My Notebook Inventory (check your assigned computer inventory or Dialup account info)
  • Retirement/Leave Accounts (view your staff retirement accounts)
  • Faculty Course Schedule Spring (view your faculty course schedule, times & locations)

The URL for CMyU is: http://www.umcrookston.edu/cmyu

To report problems or if you have questions, please use the CMyU Feedback link. You can also call 218-281-8374 or send an email to: tmulvane@mail.crk.umn.edu

We hope that this website will offer you convenient and easy access to the UMC community and all its resources.

Student Services Technology Teleconference
April 18

UMC will be a downlink site for the teleconference “Innovation in Planning for Student Services: Models that Blend High Touch with High Tech” on Thursday, April 18, from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. in Dowell Hall room 205.

Student services have become a strategic issue for institutions that seek to improve retention and stay competitive.  Colleges and universities are challenged to know their students' expectations and design a student services model that's attuned to student needs as well as the institution's culture and values.  Finding the appropriate blend of "high touch" and "high tech" has become especially critical, given the importance of Web strategies to most student services models today.

This program, a follow-up to the popular Planning for Student Services: Best Practices for the 21st Century, introduces the topic of Web portals, interactive chats, and call centers needed to support Web services.  You'll also hear about the lessons learned from one-stop centers, which are driving new facilities designs and defining new job functions for student services professionals.  These lessons are also shaping the services delivered via the Web.

Represented on the panel will be institutions from throughout North America that are recognized for their effective practices.  Panelists will present case studies of their planning processes, showing how they've successfully integrated technology into their student services projects, redesigned processes, implemented change, and ultimately extended their brand.

PANELISTS
James Black
Associate Provost for Enrollment Services
University of North Carolina at Greensboro

Darlene Burnett
Consultant
Education Consulting and Services

Kristine Dillon
Dean, Academic Services and Student Affairs
Tufts University

Robert B. Kvavik
Associate Vice President and Executive Officer
University of Minnesota

Craig Swenson
Provost & Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs
University of Phoenix

Academic Advisement and Registration April 19
The first session of academic advisement and registration of new students for fall semester 2002 is scheduled for Friday, April 19.  The session is reserved for merit scholarship recipients and high ability students.  Approximately 22 students and their families are expected.

Additional sessions are set for May 15, 16, 17, 20, and June 10.  For more information, contact the Office of Admissions and Financial Aid, 281-281-8569.

Hate Crimes Workshops April 23
Stop the HateWorkshops about hate crimes and hate incidents will be offered on campus Tuesday, April 23, in Sahlstrom Conference Center 131.  A faculty and staff workshop will run from 2 to 3:30 p.m., and a student workshop will run from 4 to 6 p.m.  Participants in these workshops will develop an understanding of hate crimes, will explore the scope of their impact on campus, and will develop ideas for a comprehensive approach to hate crime prevention.  The presenter will be Teresa Helfter Glover, Assistant Director, Activities and Organizations, Minnesota State University, Moorhead.

Thousands of people are victimized each year because of their actual or perceived skin color, ethnicity, religion, gender, and/or sexual orientation.  The US Federal Bureau of Investigation statistics show that schools and college campuses are the third most common place for hate crimes to occur.   Due to such statistics and the fact that the majority of hate crimes are committed by young people, there is a pressing need for colleges and universities to take the lead in preventing hate behavior and creating a safe learning environment for all people.

ITC Updates
Here are some updates from the Instructional Technology Center.

Sarah Riewer has taken a job close to her home since April 1.  We will miss her excellent technology support and friendly help.

A new link "Learning Interactives:  Flash Learning Games" has been added on UMC's Technology Menu web page.  This will make it easier for students at UMC to find the flash games they need for study.

New Flash Games This Week:  "Composition Terms" (by Adonica Schultz), "Seeds Games 2 & 3" (by Chuck Habstritt), "Plant Taxonomy" (by Phil Baird), and "Entrepreneurs" (by Rob Smith).  Feel free to check them out!

Seeds Interactive 3 CD has been released.  A Flash demo (created by Ben Loll, Agronomy and ITM major) has been posted for the public to preview the new version as well as placing orders for the CD.  See <www.umcrookston.edu/ag/seeds_demo/seeds_demo.html>.

The latest version of Flash is out.  It's called Flash MX.  The ITC will be offering some in-depth workshops on Flash MX during summer.

The next version of WebCT (version 3.7) will include the Equation Editor.  This may help faculty who design calculated questions for WebCT quizzing and testing.  More information will be provided as soon as we know when we can participate in the trial period.

Accolades
Deb Zak  Dan Oberg
Deb Zak,
Northwest District Director for University of Minnesota Extension Services with central office located on the UMC campus, has been selected as one of the recipients of the University of Minnesota President’s Award for Outstanding Service for 2002.  She will receive the award from President Mark Yudof at a ceremony on May 8, at Eastcliff, the president’s residence.  The President’s Award for Outstanding Service is presented each spring and honors active or retired faculty or staff members who have gone well beyond their regular duties and have demonstrated an unusual commitment to the University community.

UMC wildlife management student Dan Oberg has been named one of only five students in the nation to receive the Wildlife Leadership Award from the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation.   He is also the very first wildlife student in Minnesota to receive this distinction.  He was selected for this prestigious award based on his “demonstrated leadership potential, conservation philosophy, and solid academic performance."  Dan Svedarsky, Professor of Natural Resources and Program Manager of UMC’s Natural Resources Department, said, “We are indeed proud of the leadership Dan has been providing on campus.  He does himself proud, and other students need models and reference points to show the way.”  Oberg will receive a plaque and a $2,000 cash award.  He is a junior from Isanti, Minnesota.
