Hate Crime Presentation April 23
Faculty/Staff
Workshop, 2 to 3:30 p.m., Sahlstrom Conference Center 131
Hate crimes and hate
incidents serious threaten society today. Thousands of people are
victimized each year because of their actual or perceived skin color,
ethnicity, religion, gender, and/or sexual orientation. The US Federal
Bureau of Investigation statistics show that schools and college
campuses are the third most common place for hate crimes to occur. Due
to such statistics and the fact that the majority of hate crimes are
committed by young people, there is a pressing need for colleges and
universities to take the lead in preventing hate behavior and creating a
safe learning environment for all people. Participants in this workshop
will develop an understanding of hate crimes and begin to identify ways
to respond to hate and eliminate hate from our campus.
Student Workshop, 4 to 6 p.m.,
Sahlstrom Conference Center 131
How would you, your floor or your student organization respond
if a hate crime happened on campus? How would the campus respond? Has
your organization or the campus taken any steps to prevent the
occurrence of hate crimes? As hate incidents and hate crimes become
more prevalent in our society, it is increasingly important that we take
a proactive approach to preventing them from happening on our campus.
Participants in this workshop will develop an understanding of hate
crimes and explore the scope of their impact on our campus. Through
group activities and interactive discussions you will develop ideas for
a comprehensive approach to hate crime prevention on our campus. Pizza
will be provided for dinner!

Hate website at

Creating Video Streaming in
the Classroom
I would like to thank everyone
who attended the ITC Technology Presentation on Friday. I hope that it
clarified some questions about creating streaming video of classroom
lectures.
For those who were
unable to attend or who would like more information, there is an online
presentation that is more detailed and extensive than the short
presentation on Friday. Included on the site is a 78-minute video
tutorial synchronized with PowerPoint and a 12-minute software tutorial
on using Microsoft Producer.
The presentation is
available at
http://streamingmedia.stevehannah.net. There is also a video stream
suitable for modem connections so you may evaluate it from home and
decide if it is acceptable for dial-up users.
ERRATA: In the
presentation I state that the Windows Media 7.1 technology is not
compatible with users on Macintosh computers. At the time (Christmas
Break) the video was created that was true. On January 19, 2002,
Microsoft released the Windows Media Player 7.1 for Macintosh, and this
will support all video formats that are available to Windows users.
There may be some other errata in the presentation (my disclaimer) and I
welcome corrections and comments from everyone.
If there is further
interest in an afternoon workshop on creating digital video, please send
me an e-mail and we'll arrange something before the semester is done.

Riders Qualify for IHSA Zones in River Falls
Four UMC students will advance to
the Intercollegiate Horse Show Association (IHSA) Zone Championships on
April 13 at University of Wisconsin, River Falls. To qualify for the
Zone, riders had to place first or second in classes at the IHSA
Regional Show held Saturday at the University Teaching and Outreach
Center arena.
Julie Schlossberg of
Crookston was UMC’s only double qualifier and the only Hunt Seat Team
rider to advance. Schlossberg won the Intermediate Equitation Over
Fences Class and placed second in the Intermediate Equitation on the
Flat Class.
Three members of the
Western Team qualified for Zones. Sharon Altepeter, a senior from
Crookston, placed second in the Open Reining Equitation Class. Keri

Remembering Tom Voigt
Tom Voigt passed away from a
sudden and massive heart attack over the weekend. Many of you got to
know Tom last semester as an Instructor in the Information Technology
Management (ITM) program. While he was only with us for a single
semester, his kindness, dedication, and passion for learning was always
evident in his working relationships with faculty, staff, administration
and students. He will be missed.
Tom's funeral is
scheduled for Friday, April 12, at the St. Hillaire Catholic Church in
Pelican Rapids, MN. A prayer service will be held at the Larson Funeral
Home, also in Pelican Rapids, on Thursday evening at 7 p.m.
