Hollywood Squares
February 20
“What’s on Wednesday” (W.O.W.)
will sponsor UMC’s own version of the Hollywood Squares on Wednesday,
February 20, beginning at 8 p.m. in Bede Ballroom. Several UMC
faculty and staff will serve as the question-answering celebrities

welcome to attend.
American
Pictures at UMC February 21
In the early 1970s Jacob Holdt, a
young man from Denmark, arrived in America with only $40. He ended up
staying for five years and hitchhiking over 118,000 miles across the
country. Holdt will present a detailed account of his traveling
experiences, a show called "American Pictures," at UMC on
Thursday, February 21, from 6:30-9:30 p.m. in Bede Ballroom. Admission
is free, and the event is open to the public.
An important thrust of
the show concerns institutionalized poverty, fear, and insecurity. As
an outsider having grown up in what he describes as a European welfare
state, Holdt challenges established American thought patterns by
demonstrating through his photography the enormous financial and human
costs of life without cradle-to-grave security.

Student Performance
Notification
UMC is making a concerted effort
to improve the academic performance of our students. We believe Student
Performance Notification can play an important part in these efforts.
Faculty members are once again asked to take part in the regular student
performance notification. Your assistance in completing the required
information by the deadline will be sincerely appreciated. Please note
that the deadline for entering your information is 4:30 p.m., Thursday,
February 21.
All students will
receive an e-mail notification reporting their approximate grade in each
UMC class in which they are enrolled based on the information you and
their other instructors enter on the system. (College in the High School
and NWTC-EGF classes have been deleted.) The process expands on the
“early warning“ concept and includes an approximate grade for all
students – not just those students who may be having difficulty. All
faculty are strongly encouraged to enter a grade for all students as
well as “checking off” specific problem areas if applicable – poor
attendance, missing work, or low scores. Thank you for your efforts in
this behalf.
This website will work
using Internet Explorer only. (The site will not work using Netscape.)

gives you access to your classes for Student Performance Notification.
Please log in and check
to see if all your classes are listed. Notify Tom Mulvaney if there are
any errors.

Undergraduate
Research Opportunities Program
UROP application material for
intersession projects (from May 20, 2002 to June 30, 2002) or regular
year projects (from June 17, 2002 through June 15, 2003) is now
available in the Academic Affairs Office. The maximum award is $1,700 –
stipend up to $1,400 (hourly rate is $10.84) and expense allowance up to
$300. Completed applications should be returned to the Academic Affairs
Office by 4:30 p.m. on March 4, 2002 (late applications will not be

research, scholarly, or creative projects undertaken in partnership with
a faculty member. UROP affords undergraduates the unique educational
experience of collaborating with a faculty member on the design and
implementation of a project. At the same time, faculty have the
opportunity to work closely with students and receive valuable
assistance with their own research or professional activity. UROP
encourages students to conduct research and pursue academic interests
outside of their regular courses by employing them to work on special
projects. UROP applications are judged on the quality of the proposed
project and the educational benefit to the student. Copies of UROP
proposals submitted by UMC students that have been funded are on reserve
in the library.
