4. How can I register for an online course?

- I am enrolled in a UMC degree program and have a student ID number.
- I am not admitted to UMC and not enrolled in a UMC program.
- I am not admitted to UMC and am enrolling in a UMC program.

First, you must select the type of student you are at UMC:

I am enrolled in a UMC degree program and have an student ID number.
ALL ONLINE COURSES require you to obtain a permission number before you can register for the course. Contact the Center for Adult Learning to receive this permission (magic) number first.

Online courses will show up as closed on the web registration system. This doesn't necessarily mean that the course if full, but is a stop in the system, requiring you to get the necessary permission number from the Center for Adult Learning before registering.

Once you have the permission number, you may register one of 2 ways:
1. Complete the online registration if you are a student that has previously taken courses and are eligible - Find out if you are eligible for Web Registration at: Web Registration Eligibility
2. Complete a registration form and take it to the Registrar’s office.

Complete the Application as a Special Student/Distance Education Programs if you have not previously taken any courses at UMC (Non-Degree Application).

5. How do I know what classes I am enrolled in?

The Registrar’s office will email a Study Guide to you at your UMC email address. You can also check your classes by visiting this site: http://onestop.umcrookston.edu/registration/
You must use your Internet ID and password.

6. How do I start the course and locate the course website?

Each semester you must complete the Online Course activation process to get started in you online course. This process will activate or check your Internet ID, create or verify your UMC email account, provide a valid alternate email address for contact information and link you to your course website. You can complete the online course activation process at:

7. How do I find out what books I need for the course?

Students may contact the UMC bookstore to purchase the necessary textbooks for their courses. You can contact them by calling them at 1-800-862-6466 ext. 8335 or ordering them online here: http://www.bookstores.umn.edu/crookston/.

8. How do I get my books?

The UMC bookstore will ship your books to you if you provide them with your current mailing address.

9. How long do I have to complete the online course?

Fall and Spring courses run the standard semester length of 15 weeks.
Summer semester courses last 9 weeks.

10. How do I get my grades?

Grades are not mailed to students. You can check your grades at this site: http://onestop.umcrookston.edu/registration/grades/ You must know your Internet ID and password.

11. How do I take tests?

Your instructor may give tests online or require you to identify a proctor. Check your syllabus or contact your instructor for specific course requirements. You can find out more information at: Testing and Proctors

12. Do I get a UMC laptop computer?

Distance Education credits do not qualify for laptop eligibility during the Fall and Spring semesters. If you are a UMC student enrolled in 12 on-campus credits, you are eligible for a laptop. All other students must have an alternate e-mail address and an internet service provider (ISP) at their home location. You can find more information at:

13. What is my UMC student ID number?

Your UMC student ID number is your unique identification as a University of Minnesota, Crookston student. This is a 7-digit number assigned when you are admitted to UMC. Contact the Center for Adult Learning if you have not yet received your student ID number in an email or do not remember if from previous semesters. Student ID example: 9876543

14. What is my UMC email address and password?

You will receive information on your UMC email address through the personal email address you provided when registering. You can find more information about your email account and how to access your messages at: Email Information

15. What is my Internet ID (X.500)?

Your Internet ID (x.500) is used along with your Internet ID password to log into your courses at and for checking your grades, financial accounts, registration information, and personal information at http://onestop.umcrookston.edu/.

You can verify and/or activate your UMC Internet ID (x.500) and password through the Online course activation process at: http://www.umcrookston.edu/cal/online/start.htm.

Your Internet ID (x.500) will be the first part of your email address. It is a combination of 4 letters and 4 numbers, usually the first 4 letters of your last name. Your Internet ID and password will be the same for your entire academic career at UMC. Internet ID Example: John Smith: smit0001

16. What is my University of Minnesota Library card number?

This number provides access to University of Minnesota libraries and online databases. Your library card # can be located by completing the following steps:

Go to: http://www.umn.edu/validate
Enter your Internet ID (X.500) and password.
A separate browser window will appear.
Choose the option: "E-Mail Account Options"
Your library card number is the 14-digit number that will reflected on the screen.

17. How do I withdraw from a course?

18. How do I pay for the course?

19. How do I request a transcript?

To get a copy of you Official UMC transcript for yourself or to be sent to another institution, please follow the Transcript Request Process link.
