Job Title:  Assistant Trainer

Job Responsibilities:
Assist in the training processes involved with starting thru finishing young horses.  Mostly was starting to training thru 30 days.  Also, cleaning stalls, hauling hay and straw, fixing/building fence, showing, grooming, and most important “learning”…

Summarize Your Experience:
I really enjoyed the opportunity I had and the knowledge level of training that I walked away with.  The experience will follow me and be applied to my career choices.  Although some days “summer- hot” were grueling the experience was a very positive one.

What I liked about the job:
The thrill of  “First rides” and being able to apply the knowledge gained to hands on applications of different young horses training lessons.  Also, the constant challenge that each new horse brought forth to my learning experience.

I also was able to show in open shows and the Red River Valley Select Sire Futurity in:

-         QH Yearling Stallions Halter Class

-         QH Yearling Longe Line Class

What I disliked about the job:

Nothing Really – I got to be outdoors doing what I love to do…

Maybe the sleeping schedules at breed shows…hehe (not enough hours in a day)

- I really get into my work…

Major:  Equine Industries Management

Class:  Senior

Place of Employment:  Cypress Trails a.k.a. Cypresswood Stables

Address:   21415 Cypresswood Dr.
                 Humble, TX  77338

Dates of Internship: May 14, 2000- August 24, 2000

Name of Supervisor:  Darolyn Butler-Dial

Phone Number:  (281)446-2232

Job Title:  Wrangler

Job Responsibilities:
Overseeing and participating to be sure daily duties are completed: chores, medical treatments, and other priority projects that go along with the weeks activities.  Training horses, teaching riding lessons and guiding trail rides were also part of my daily schedule.  I was also responsible for making each day’s riding schedule the night before.  The month of August, Darolyn was in France training and competing for the World Championship Endurance Ride.  I co-managed the farm with a seniority worker.  We both had a lot more responsibility that month.  Additional responsibilities at that time include ordering feed and hay, making appointments with farriers and veterinarians as needed, and taking care of the borders needs.

Summarize Your Experience:
My experience was unmatchable.  There is nothing I can imagine that will ever match the stress, excitement, challenge, or joy that I had everyday.  It was a very beautiful, enchanting place to work.  It was also a very high energy, high stress atmosphere.

What I liked about the job:
I enjoyed giving riding lessons the most.  A lot of my students had only been on a horse a handful of times.  By the end of the summer three of my students competed in their first endurance races.  I also enjoyed guiding trail rides which allowed me to share my love of horses and the trail with others.

What I disliked about the job:
It would be hard to keep up that energy level for a long period of time (longer than 4 months).  This job required a lot of duties to be done in a day that only has so many hours.  There were about 4 days throughout the summer that I was unable to complete because of heat exhaustion or simply exhaustion.  By the end of my internship experience I was burned out.

Areas that I need to learn more about:
I would like to learn more about feeds and feeding. I want to understand what various performance horses need according to the stress they experience during training.  I would also like to learn more about exercise physiology in horses.  I would like to learn how to analyze how much time a performance horse needs to recover between workouts.  This would greatly help maximize training.

My experience at Benvelle Equestrian Center was very good.  I learned a lot of things in many areas of the equine business that I had never experienced before.

What I liked about the job:

I liked being able to experience many areas within the equine industry.  I also liked the living arrangements, so I didn’t have to drive to work everyday.  I also got to keep my horses there at half-price.

What I disliked about the job:
I wish I had gotten more instruction about training during the time that I was training horses.
