I felt I had an excellent opportunity to further my education in the dairy field.  This internship provided me with a variety of opportunities to challenge my knowledge in 
the dairy field and gave me a lot of excellent experience for my future career.

What I liked about the job:  
I had a sense of responsibility and I was able to make some of the decisions.

What I disliked about the job:  
There were long hours and if someone didn’t show up I was in charge to get the shift filled.  

Areas that I need to learn more about:

 The general purpose of the studies are as follows:

 Induced Lactation Study

  • Determine the effectiveness of a dairy animal producing milk without giving birth.

     

Heifer Study

  • Monitor growth of heifers and specific hormone levels associated with production.

 Job Title:  Research Assistant

Job Responsibilities:

  • Sampled feed ingredients (weekly)
  • Prepared feed offered and weighback composites (biweekly)
  • Performed corn silage dry matter analysis (weekly)
  • Recorded daily observations of heifers
  • Entered feed analysis data into computer
  • Administered subcutaneous injections
  • Performed udder massage
  • Took tail vein blood samples
  • Spun blood samples
  • Collected milk samples
  • Observed and documented milk dump verification
  • Sorted blood plasma and serum of past studies

Internship Summary:
I enjoyed my internship experience. I thought that the two studies that I worked with were extremely organized. I appreciated the opportunity to develop hands-on skills in my field. This type of internship was new to me and gave me experience that I know will be useful in the future. I recommend this kind of internship experience to Animal Science students seeking an internship.

  • Work duties and scheduling were flexible.
  • The responsibility within the internship was at a desirable level.
  • Studies were well organized.

  • Inconsistent workload
  • Computer data entries

 

 Areas That I Need to Learn More About:
The specific type of internship that I was involved with didn’t require me to learn too much more about the position. However, a task that I feel I need to become more comfortable in doing is the computer data entry.
