College in the High School (CIHS)

CIHS is a program for students wishing to earn college credit right at their high school. High schools must be approved by UMC to participate in the program. For information regarding your high school and CIHS courses, contact your high school counselor or principal.

To be eligible, students must meet the following:

  • Junior or senior in high school
  • Minimum 3.00 high school GPA

 

Non-Degree Seeking Students

Persons may enroll at UMC to take courses not in accordance with a degree program. As a 'Non-degree seeking student,' they are not candidates for a degree but may later apply for degree-seeking status. Admissions criteria are more flexible for non-degree applicants. Every Non-Degree seeking student:

  • Must hold a high school diploma or educational equivalent (i.e. GED)
  • Must demonstrate the ability to succeed in college level coursework
  • Will be reviewed for admission on an individual basis
  • Is not eligible for financial aid

English as a Second Language (ESL) program

The ESL program at the University of Minnesota , Crookston (UMC) is a pre-collegiate English program providing English language instruction and related support services to foreign students who are both qualified for and have a desire to study undergraduate classes at UMC.

The ESL program is designed for highly motivated students who with to read, speak, hear, and write English for professional, personal, or academic purposes. The ESL program:

  • Is a non-credit program in English as a Second Language.
  • Has three levels of instruction (beginning, intermediate, and advanced) with each level typically taking one semester (16 weeks).
  • Prepares students to apply for degree-seeking status after completing the advanced level of instruction.

Senior Citizens


Minnesota residents age 62 or older may enroll in UMC courses when space is available after all tuition-paying students have been accommodated, provided they have completed specified prerequisites for the courses they plan to take. Senior citizens pay minimal fees for courses depending on the course and status.

  • Courses for credit: $10 per credit (plus special fees dependent on course)
  • Courses for no credit: Pay only special fees dependent on course
